Re: long lost/uncharted/unknown Oregon airstrips...

Regarding Burns Junction Oregon at the intersections of Hwy 78 and 95 ( North of Rome State Airport, and West of the town of Rome Ore ):

The quality of the G-Earth pics are very poor for this area of Oregon, so I present these, rather small, but very clear ones. I found them here: http://www.ormap.net/flexviewer/index.html

What I like about this web site is that I can find out ( by interpolation ) is if the land is public or private. I know there are other G-Earth overlays out there for BLM, etc overlays. This is just one more tool in the tool bag for me.

South Burns Jct Ore: Any words on this strip would be welcome. Is there a place to eat at Burns Jct?
This is the strip on the South side of the intersection I'm talking about only.
Image

North Burns Jct Ore: This is a active BLM airport ( State of OR Av product said so ). But any port in a storm is good, right? Choss posted already ( on page 1 ), but this one is a little more clear...
Image

Sorry Choss, no UFO's, just BLM. ( Oregon's Area 50 and 1/2  :?: )

Note: Notice where it says 4100 and 998 in the yellow boxes? I can go to the county web site and find out who owns that property with the number. This might help you obtain landing rights at that perfect back country strip you know of, but don't know who to ask.

Thanks all.

Big Indian Ore ( Steen's Mtn. area )
Choss, I followed the link that you posted ( on page 3 ) and read up on the subject. I used all the Lat-Longs that others posted to search. I zoomed in on G-earth and found 3 pics that were labeled as if they were old big Indian strip pics. One pic was miles from were it should have been pinned, and I found the pic by accident. Looking at them, I just don't know....

Anyways, since I chased around, I figure I would post a pic here in case somebody ever wants to explore. Maybe it will inspire your quest.
Image

If you ever want to hike up the canyon to this site it is 5 miles up hill Eastbound from the trailhead camp ground. I think the trail puts you on the North side of the river. 2 of the ( alleged ) strip sites are on the South side, so your gonna get wet.

Happy Hunting.

Re: long lost/uncharted/unknown Oregon airstrips...

Already mentioned at the "Paul Freeman" site about old airfields,
http://www.airfields-freeman.com/

but....

Cards Airpark in Dallas Ore
Image

The Historic Silverton Ore Airport. Located at Pine and Airport rd. behind the Wooden Nickel Pub.
Several attempts were made to get the airport back open, and one attempt to develop it in to a flying community failed.
When the new Silverton high school was built the locals had a fit saying comments like "....a plane is going to crash in to the school...".
Ultimately the pitchfork carrying town folks won out. A guy I knew at one time helped his Granddad clean old one of the old hangars when he was just a boy. He said there were all kinds of empty big brass artillery shells that they threw out that somebody had kept as war souvenirs. He wishes he would have kept them now.

If you are looking for a list of private airfields in Oregon, check here:
http://www.oregon.gov/aviation/docs/Pri ... y_2013.pdf

I'm still in need of info on Hampton and Riley Ore, if you have it.

Hampton on the October 1991 Klamath Falls sectional. The next newest one I have is October 1996 and Hampton is not on it.

Nice! Usually when I see buildings I assume it is probably a private ranch strip, but ya never know? After all this GoogleEarth browsing I'd say there are probably 100+ privately owned personal strips that are not registered with the FAA strips in Oregon. The BLM overlay that svanarts posted here: http://www.backcountrypilot.org/community/forum/latest/blm-google-earth-overlay-14727 shows BLM land one township to the south of this strip, but I know its not entirely accurate because I noticed there is still some BLM land not in that overlay file that I've spotted. So who knows could maybe still be on BLM land. Either way any strip near water/fishing is a good strip by me!

Use this map for locating BLM land. It's got far more detail. Can't remember who originally posted it but I found the link here on BCP. Find your spot then look for the SMA checkbox to find out how the surface management agency is.

I checked the geocommunicator site on the above airstrip, it is indeed just north of BLM land and just west of State Park land. So the google earth overlay was accurate in this case.

Thanks for the post. Looking at GoogleEarth this is all I could find of something resembling a strip in Hampton. Too bad its not there any more, since I think the store in Hampton is still open.

I tried to drive to the strip/concrete arrow to get some pictures, but unfortunately I could not find any public access. The only road shown on GoogleEarth appears to be private. Bummer!

I don't think I posted this one yet, it is on BLM land just off Whitehorse Ranch Road in SE Oregon.

Re: long lost/uncharted/unknown Oregon airstrips...

This is shown on GoogleEarth as and airstrip named "Lockhart", half of the strip is on BLM land.

Now whats interesting is here is the imaging from 2012, it appears that they built a road, that double as an airstrip?

Dang it Choss! You beat me to some that I was going to post. =D> Well two can play at that game.
Nice job adding to the Calif airport thread by the way.

Temperance Creek Ore and Idaho in Hells Canyon on the Snake River. Another post just mentioned it is a B&B. checked out their web page and it really looks like an adventure. Anybody know about the Idaho side strip?

Pittsburg Landing Ore in Hells Canyon on the Snake River. My old USGS chart says the buildings on the NW side are "administrative". Somebody posted a pic of an airplane that crashed on G-Earth. Windsock is on the Southside of strip.

You guys definitely have the "Big Picture" when comes to flying in Oregon. I am learning a ton of stuff about the geography and backcountry possibilities.

I remember Freight Wagon. East of hwy 97, between Bend and Redmond Ore. If I remember, it caused a stir due to land use planning, or lack there of. Now it is a golf resort and the runway is gone. Funny how that works, huh?
