BCPer's,

The Pops and I are jumping in the Skywagon out of Astoria or Hood River and heading East to hit a couple of spots in MT for some fishing and then into OSH on the 24th. Would love to stop by the STOL camp and say hi. I am a huge fan of this website and this type of flying!!! You guys sure know how to make it fun for guys like me that need that back country living!!! Fly safe, we will hit Reedsburg the day before we go in. Hope to met all of you there!!

Keep the rubber side down!

If that's the plan, keep in mind that the airport is a long, LONG way from town. Lots of rental cars available, though.

I was over Rock Springs once, coming back from OSH in 2010, looking at a line of foul looking cumulonimbus to the west and saw how far out of town the airport was... I made a 180 and headed back to the east for Rawlins. Airport is in town, was offered indoor parking. Interesting stranded pilots to talk to, cheap motels in easy walking distance. Got home the next day, Not such a bad deal.

I'd hope you consider overnighting in hay springs, ne. Much more pleasant camping and a nice 2 block walk to a good steakhouse

Re: Low and Slow to Osh starts in 13 days!

I'm meeting Kevin KCPR. Mid afternoon Friday. Any we missed for good overnight stops east of Casper? <2hr I'm thinking Hay Springs.

My wish lost in order of importance.

1. Grass camping
2. Walking distance to restaurant
3. Walking distance to motel
4. Courtesy car
5. Wi Fi
6. Shower

Rob, if you find yourself to the south, Oshkosh, NE (KOKS) is a nice little airport. It has been a while since I've been up there, but if they allow camping in the grass (I don't see why they wouldn't), it meets the needs on your list.

Fly safe everyone, I look forward to reading about the adventure.

Re: Low and Slow to Osh starts in 13 days!

Head off to the East tomorrow, for Oshkosh... I'm a real slow poke, no fun to fly with.. haha..so will just see who catches me an maybe I can meet up at night or something.. I'm going a bit North to see Mt Rushmore on the way, but I'll be listening for radio chatter. I'd like to get to Viroqua, WI (Y51) a day or so early to practice in the lower elev.. Viroqua has a fun fly-in, for all of us on Sunday morning and they are setting up for our STOL demo again, on the grass runway. Everyone is welcome to join in the STOL demo, and the Lions Club is there and has great food too. It's a perfect place to gather Saturday night, camp overnight and food, Walmart, movie theater, stores etc. Is all walking distance. Then only a hundred miles or so on to Oshkosh. They do have a courtesy car too. See ya there if not before.....

Steve and I along with a couple others should make Viroqua Saturdsy afternoon early eve. That's the plan. If weather pushes on us we will be there early Sunday. Don't leave for Osh without us.

Last time I flew in there was a couple of years ago in early February. I was ferrying my "new to me" Commander 114 back to Dallas from Wyoming and we stopped at KOKS for fuel. Thank goodness it was self-serve fuel, because we were the only idiots who were out in the -27*F cold! Waded through knee-deep snow to the fence, squeezed our way through and crossed the road for what seemed like the best microwave hamburgers known to man. (Amazing what intense hunger and intense cold will do for the quality of food!)

I gotta go back sometime when it's not covered in snow and ice!

Thanks Matt. Pops I'll see you at Viroqua if not sooner. I think we will make the Bar J Steakhouse Friday night. Probably a late dinner 8PM.

Hay Springs (4V6) is your best bet given your criteria. If you want to be off grid, I know a spot sw of caspar and ne of rawlings - but you'll not get all the things on your list. Well any of them really in that part of wyoming.

Please let me know where you guys are going to overnight Friday night - I'll try and meet up and bring you a bottle of Colorado whiskey.

Re: Low and Slow to Osh starts in 13 days!

Leaving Dillon MT Friday. Plan on hitting SD somewhere. Any good small towns or strips we should stay at for the same reason for the camping and the easy life. Hay S. is a little more south than we wanted to divert.
thanks
TM.
PS any private (ranch strips) that would welcome a father/son duo would be out of this world for us to tell the story.

going in on Sunday!!! Fly safe!

Re: Low and Slow to Osh starts in 13 days!

Finally got my airplane back from my mechanic Thursday night, did some break-in flying on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, then did my IPC/BFR Monday morning. I'd rate me a C on the IPC part and a B+ on the BFR. Surprising how rough I was after the 4 month non-flying hiatus.

So I plan to head off to OSH Friday morning. I haven't decided on stops yet, but typically if I go my "south" route, I stop in Grand Island (nice sandwich shop there in past years) and in Dubuque (good food there, too, but I usually only eat there after leaving OSH on the way home). If I go my "north" route, Luverne, MN, just east of Sioux Falls, SD, is a nice little airport, very accommodating--and in the last several years the FBO has put on a nice feed (free) for OSH-bound travelers--but look out for jumpers--pretty active at times. Next stop is La Crosse, WI.

Either way I arrive at OSH with plenty of fuel still, either for holding if necessary (did that only once, but it was for nearly 45 minutes around Green Lake), and no need to fill up before leaving, if I return approximately the same way I came. Incidentally, at GRI, DBQ, and LYV, there's a fuel discount for OSH travelers. Haven't gotten one at LSE, though. You have to ask for it at GRI and DBQ; it's automatic at LYV.

Very much looking forward to a week at OSH--seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and AIRPLANES! :)

Re: Low and Slow to Osh starts in 13 days!

My son and I are planning to head out Thursday morning with a stop to see friends just outside of SLC. Plan to meet up with the group either on the way to, or at 4V6. Saturday we'll make our own way to Y51 so I can make a couple of business related stops and write off the trip

Hey Kelly. Good news your coming. The lure of Osh was just to strong to say no to. See you at 4V6 Friday. I'll be there close to 2 PM.
