My ‘56 182 has a lean....

At the airport yesterday doing some spring cleaning ....backed off to admire my work and noticed the airplane has a visible lean to the left side...hanger floor is flat...checked air pressure in the mains and nose...and measured the height off the floor at the rear tip of each wing tip fairing....

Right side is 84 inches....left is 74....

Do I have a gear attach problem....a bent gear leg....?

Any help appreciated before I move ahead further....

Re: My ‘56 182 has a lean....

Was the plane pivoted as it was rolled into place? This will cause one leg to pull out. How about fuel level in tanks? DENNY

Re: My ‘56 182 has a lean....

Just topped off.....but it was pivoted when I put it back in as I recall...I’ll pull it out straight and check in the AM...hope it’s something simple like....pilot handling...!

Thanks

On my 1960 182 the pilot side wing is lower to the ground. It flies great, and my floor may not be level. one tank may be more full then the other. I never did look into it.

Re: My ‘56 182 has a lean....

DENNY nailed the most common cause, if they turn even a little then one gear leg can splay out.

A tired spring or loose king bolt isn't out of the question though. If pulling it straight ahead a few feet doesn't fix it, keep looking.

Re: My ‘56 182 has a lean....

If all checks out: flat floor, tire pressures, balanced fuel tanks, unsplaying gear legs etc, its possible one gear leg may have a little more "sag" than the other. You can adjust the gear legs too some degree to get your wing height right, or at least a lot closer.
Roughly the procedure is:
1) Jack up the low side in such a fashion that the tire & gear leg hangs free.
2) Loosen the 2 u-bolt nuts for that gear leg.
3) Remove the bolt at the tip of the gear leg. There is a washer or shim under the leg. The thickness of it determines the wing height.
The standard bolt is an AN6-16A. To raise that side use a thicker shim or washer and the alternate bolt AN6-17A, which is a little longer.
After doing so, its possible your tire alignment may be a little off. Or maybe back on depending on when it was last aligned vs when the spring began to sag. Either way that's adjustable too.

Re: My ‘56 182 has a lean....

Power of the Community....Thanks to all for the observations and advice...I rehangered the airplane today and the wing height difference was reduced to 5 inches....could now be fuel imbalance.....or as suggested I may have a sagging gear leg...it is the left side where “The Big Guy” sits....will be looking at this more and the status of the shim at the Annual in a few months....thanks again

My plane also stood uneven. The fuel would drip out my breather when full very annoying. I had a bent leg and decided to buy Titanium gear legs from The Landing Gear Works in Renton Washington. Price an overhaul of your legs and titanium makes sense. Absolutely no regrets.

Re: My ‘56 182 has a lean....

That’s an interesting solution....kid of pricey and their website seems to suggest only 180/185....I assume those of us with early 182’s work.....what’s the weight saving...?

Their web site says 13 lb savings per leg.
$18K for legs and bolt kit.........wow! Expensive but sure nice

What does it typically cost to have original steel gear legs refurbished.

I sent mine to Jim at North Sound Aviation in Washington last year. It was $1200, though only one leg needed to be re-arched (if that's the right term). Roundtrip shipping from Alaska was a bit steep, several hundred $.

That seems pretty reasonable

Besides selling titanium gear legs, Tom Anderson at TLGW in Renton WA also reconditions stock gear.
He is the guru on the subject of Cessna landing gear,
I believe he charges a bit more than Jim Hayton at North Sound Aviation though.
