My new 170

Got a new to me 170B, 180HP fully restored 240hrs ago, has most of the mods my 182 has, just need to add VGs, extended baggage compartment and an Alpha Systems AoA indicator.
Love the 31s, its like landing on cotton :)
Looking forward to flying to the gravel bars, and Idaho, need to train first and get comfortable in the 170 though.
Cruise speed 120mph, so not too bad, feels a bit nose heavy.(need to fix this)
How do 170s perform on skis? would love to add skis.(floats too).
Any tricks or advice about the 170 are welcomed, although I will be training with Jughead , so cant ask for a better teacher.

Instrument panel looks nice but location of instruments is very strange (need to relocate them).

The 182 is in Costa Rica, where I will spend the winter, will be nice to fly it again to the backcountry strips in the jungle, they are as fun as anything I have flown in the USA, and that plane is perfect for it.

Re: My new 170

Great!
IF I was ever going to trade down/up to a certified plane, it'd be that one. 120 mph, "not too bad", sure beats 85 mph! With that springy gear, I'd sure run as low of pressure as possible on those 31's when landing gravel bars etc., if they are not bulging on the bottom a bit, what most regular tire users would consider way too low of pressure, you won't be fully realizing their advantages. I know my Airstreaks have a "minimum 6 psi" stamp on them, I've NEVER run that high, usually 3.5 to 4 psi.

OooooWeeeee, thats gonna be fun! Nice airplane! Get in touch with MTV, I cant think of anyone more knowledgeable of the ins and outs of the 180hp 170 as well as many other types of airplanes. Why VG’s? Do they really make a difference on a 170? They do on some airplanes and on others just a waste of money.

Re: My new 170

Great looking airplane! One of my all time favorites. I’ll second Courierguys comment about tire pressures on BW....3 to 4 psi if going off airport.

Skis: My 170 was equipped with AWB 2500 retractable skis. They worked fine with UHMW bottoms, but they’re heavy....about 120 pounds added.

My favorite skis I’ve actually flown on a 170 were Air Glide 3000s. Quite a bit lighter, much more bottom area, and nice functionality. Not sure how they were approved, but likely FA.

Congratulations on the new acquisition!

This is the way I see it from personal experience in a Cessna, If you add a STOL kit you modify the wing with so it can fly slower, if you dont do anything to the elevator it wont keep up and you will loose elevator authority at the new slower speeds, Vgs help with this , plus giving you more aileron and rudder control at slows speeds.

This has been my experience when I added VGs to my 182 when only had a STOL kit, it gave elevator authority and more control at slow speeds, since the 170 basically has the same wing and even a smaller horizontal, its a great candidate for VGs.
I know some pilots dont like them, I totally believe in them.

Yep, I understand the theory, just wondering how they do on a 170.

Nice machine, will be interested in following your comments and posts on it.

Re: My new 170

I fly all season's with my 170B, skis are sweet. I have a operational preference for fixed penetration skis, they are lighter then their hydraulic big brother without overly sacrificing on functionality.

Re: My new 170

Congratulations on a beautiful airplaine. You will really enjoy it. I flew my 170B on skis regularly - Landes 2500 straight skis, combined with 80/42 climb prop, and O300 engine. Performance was reasonable, especially with the more dense air in winter months. I flew into my cabin NW of Anchorage skis. My landing strip was a snow covered swamp about 2000 feet in length (1800 foot altitude) with 50+ foot trees on both ends. I would pack the runway with snow shoes and packed about 1400 length. I was usually off the ground in about 1000 feet or less, but the extra length gave me a margin of comfort, especially with a passenger and winter gear on board.

Flying cargo out to the cabin, leaving from a local lake near sea level, I would remove the passenger and back seat, and carry myself, full fuel, and nearly 400 pounds of supplies.

I envy your cruise performance and big tires.

Nice looking 170!
FWIW the Micro Aero kit for the 170A & B puts VG's on the wing & the horizontal, but not the vertical--
so it won't do much for your rudder.

Re: My new 170

FYI, I installed Micro Aerodynamics VG kit on my 180 hp Cessna 170 B. That airplane did not have a leading edge cuff...totally stock wing, except later model Cessna droop tips. I was not particularly impressed with the VGs on that plane. They did "soften up" the stall a bit, but the stall was quite gentle to start with. If there was a reduction in stall speed, I was unable to detect it....could have been a mph or two, but nothing really noticeable.

VGs MAY have more benefit on a Sportsman equipped Cessna wing. My current 175 has both a Sportsman and VGs, but I bought it so equipped.

Will Stene, who owns the Sportsman STOL kit now advocates combining VGs with his Sportsman cuff. I'd take his recommendations to the bank.

And, at least in my opinion, the 170 B has LOTS of rudder authority, as is.

Best thing about this airplane is the color and paint scheme. It is close enough to mine that I can deny everything!

Re: My new 170

Is there an STC for an extended baggage compartment with the battery mounted on the back?
