Re: Narrow strip

Landing in the middle is number 1. Staying in the middle then becomes number 1. Be ready with your feet to enforce your will. Haven't had to land in pickup tracks: thought narrow was 35 ft at Harris Ranch until I went to Brownsville which is 20 ft but there it is a very wide clearing. Gravelly Valley is very wide clearing but it's best to land in previously worn tracks because the rocks in the grass are much much larger than gravel. (Disclaimer: I'm no expert and I'm exceedingly happy at every landing where we all walk away and we can fly the plane again despite any earlier screams.)

Re: Narrow strip

What about coming in slow also?
That's what I tried in this one.

Re: Narrow strip

Looks good Moto-

Not much more you can do there. Land in the middle and stay there.

Here is one on our circuit thats short and narrow.

More of a mind game going in without a go around option. Stay in the middle and make sure your gonna fit. This one is really not all that short or narrow, but sure looks it when on final.

Re: Narrow strip

Doesn't look bad. Do a "wheel" landing and be ready to correct with the breaks.

Re: Narrow strip

I think you did a fine job! Stall horn sounded just about right, nice and centered. Looks about the width of the strip I flew out of in Alaska. Good video to!!

Re: Narrow strip

Why land in the middle and not the 1st 1/3rd? :?:

Re: Narrow strip

that tree lined strip would be great for big cross winds.

Re: Narrow strip

Reminds me of an old flying joke. I'll skip to the punchline: That's the shortest runway I've ever seen ... yea, but it sure is wide!

Re: Narrow strip

For myself, I would be uncomfortable with the stall warner being on while I was on short final. I like to come in slow, too, but that seems a bit too slow to me. An unexpected gust could be disastrous. I couldn't tell what your airspeed was, and perhaps you know your airplane better than I know mine, but that's just too slow for me. Even with my AOA nailed on the red/yellow line, my stall warner doesn't come on until I'm flaring to land.

Otherwise, nice landing, and I echo: stay in the middle! =D>

Re: Narrow strip

Newbie post, so take it easy on me. I'm sure you had a reason to fly slow on final, but the perspective I got from the video said there was no way you'd have made it to the strip if your engine quit. Why not fly a more conventional slope on final? Besides having the ability to make the runway with our without an engine, I believe you'd have had a better indication of how well you were aligned with the narrow strip. I'm not saying you weren't aligned just fine, but that if you hadn't been, you'd have been more likely to know it.

Re: Narrow strip

Usually I come a bit high , but on this one I wanted to come with power and a bit more low to have a good look at the runway, since was my first landing there.

Re: Narrow strip

I land on little 2 track stuff that my mains just barely fit on lots of times. Many times it may be curving up a hill at the same time too. In my Highlander I do a full stall 3 point but the instant it wants to sit down I turn it into a wheel landing. By doing it like that I get the slowest landing speed possible, take away angle of attack, and can see perfectly where I'm going. It unloads the wings and loads the wheels which then gives me good traction for braking. While I'm braking I'm also very much steering with my brakes which works extremely well on the Highlander because the gear is forward and the tail is pretty heavy.

This method might not work so well in a light tail plane. I know I freak out some really good Cub and Scout pilots with what I can easily do with my brakes on this fun airplane! Another thing I like doing that I wouldn't want to do in a lot of other planes is my deadstick takeoff. :P

If you care to see more about the Highlander or what my deadstick takeoff is, check out my website: WildWestAircraft.com

Re: Narrow strip

My first thought was "why is he landing on the narrow strip between the trees when there are large open fields on either side of the tree line?" After you landed I noticed that it was a tractor road. If this is a routine location for you then you might consider one of the fields for an option provided the grass is low enough and the land is not too rough. If you are delivering supplies you might even ask if they can keep a strip mowed low for you. Mush more room and options on either side of the tree line, but the tractor road is definitely doable and not too narrow to narrow to make it uncomfortable.

Might want to carry a bit more speed / altitude till you have the field made and lose the excess with a slip or flaps, but otherwise it was a nice approach / landing.
