Re: NBAW (Johnson Creek JUNE 16-19, 2016)

Made it to Johnson Creek. I did stag one of the Primo camp spots. Fourth parking spot north of the woodpile. There's a cookstove a fire pit and barbecue. At least enough room for three other tenants. My big Cabela's tent is set up. Happy to share with anyone else who wants to pitch their tent there.

Hey Butch. I do not think I know Dick and Jane. That camp site is one of the top 3 spots at JC. I only had to go a week early to snag it. I got my chair paddle locked to the tie down chain in my parking spot. This will probably piss someone off. But better to be pissed off than pissed on.

I'll be looking for you too Bart.

Looks like the weather will be wet part of the time. The wx guesses are all over the place. That means anything can happen.

I'm planning on Thursday also Alex. Depending on wx I will adjust. I have room for 2-3 more tents at the primo camp spot. 4th spot north of the big wood pile. I'll have the Honda 1000 generator. The wi-fi works there too for some reason.

Cheers...Rob

ok Rob you are in their spot... Dick put the cross poles up years ago for tarps... if there's no 182 RG near by then they aren't there .. he's a crotchety old great guy and she's a sweet blonde.....he's also one of the pilots who put the bench in in front of the camera.... have a good week.,... hope to see you next month...

Re: NBAW (Johnson Creek JUNE 16-19, 2016)

putting a chair out in your tie down spot when you leave for the day is customarily done and has been for the 20 years I"ve been going up there... I've only had one instance where someone came and moved my chair and parked his plane in my spot... there were dozens of empty tie downs but he wanted mine which was next to the farthest out house... he claimed there was no chair there but several other campers told me they watched him move it to the outhouse and park in my spot.... oh well it takes all kinds...

What's your N # Bart? I think there might be more than a few yellow Super Cubs on 31s.

2045N...you can barely see it in the above pic by my left knee.

The WX has our "gaggle" somewhat concerned for the Wednesday noon arrival but I think we can at least make it to the Nampa area and hole up there til we get a window.

Any Idaho local WX knowledge watching this thread?? Coming from central CA through winnemucca, NV looks OK but might be a bit windy and turbulent #-o If I can see an un-obscured NE horizon at 4:30AM Wednesday, I'm launching and hoping for the best...

Re: NBAW (Johnson Creek JUNE 16-19, 2016)

Pretty "dynamic" right now. Your guess as good as mine for the weekend. Odds are, a few days of crap WX mid week predicates a greater chance of perfect t WX towards the weekend. I get nervous when its perfect WX several days before a planned trip, as the odds are greater that it will turn crappy. My 40 years of Idaho WX prognostication, that and looking out the window.

NBAW (Johnson Creek JUNE 16-19, 2016)

WX looks challenging. I'm going to try for Thursday. No since on coming Wednesday and sit in the rain. Been there done that.

THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION!!!!!

This is what I do when I get to McCall. If the clouds are to low to fly direct. I try and follow the road. I still have to get up to 7500 MSL. I keep it slow and to the right side of the canyon so I can turn around.

The moment I have ANY doubt I IMMEDIATELY turn around and go back.

It will all depend on where the showers are when you are flying so watch the trend. You may be able to time it so that you can stay behind the showers and come in after they pass, assuming you have XM weather.

Since you are coming from the southwest, another option are the desert strips such as Big Southern Butte or Carey (Edit: Picabo would be better than Carey) for an overnight stop, then early in the morning follow one of the lower valleys into either Challis or Salmon where you would pick up the main Salmon River and follow it to MacKay Bar where you would turn left and follow the South Fork of the Salmon to the East Fork of the Salmon where you can follow the river and road into Yellowpine and JC. Study the charts carefully before you go and enter the way points into your GPS so you don't make a wrong turn.

So you flew over there last weekend, secured your spot for this coming weekend, then flew home?
Doesn't seem quite cricket to me. [-X
IMHO when you leave for home, all bets are off.

We have beat this particular dead horse till there is nothing left but a red spot. No written rule as far as I can see. I did offer to share. I even said I'll bring the Honda 1000 for camp power.

So again to all my BCP buddy's, you to Eric, if you get there before me, feel free to pitch your tent. I'll be there Thursday. With my AR-15. :D

Cheers...Rob
