New Coffee Thread?

I think it's a little late to dig up the old coffee thread. So I'll just mention here a new discovery.

Coffee is like wine I think. You know, the right weather during the growing of the beans, the right timing of the harvest, the right handling going to market, the right selection and blending of beans or grapes, the right roasting, the right packaging, the right grinding and finally the right brewing.

So anyway, here is a new discovery. It's cheap and I think it's the best I've tasted maybe ever. The next batch could be lousy for all I know.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002E ... ge_o02_s01

It has a bold round flavor. That's the best word I can use. Round. It's not sharp in any way. It's smooth and the taste develops on the palate over a fairly long period of time rather than hitting you like a lot of dark roasts do. I use a cheap cuisineart burr grinder for each pot. I know a lot of you are roasters and know a whole lot more than I do about this stuff but for those of you that like a good coffee experience I would strongly suggest that you give this one a try.

And by the way, I finally bought an Aeropress for the camp trailer for when we are in the National Parks and can't use the drip machine. It's the real deal for portable coffee.

I boil a small cup of water and slowly pour it over a screen from an old broken drip machine. Mostly purchase Yuban Coffee, seems OK.

Cold morning at Port Hardy, British Columbia.

Ahhh! Thanks for starting a new coffee thread! :D

The Aeropress is awesome. Lately though, I've found myself cycling back to the old cowboy coffee method. Just feels right when you're out in the woods.

If done right (don't boil the grounds; give it enough time to settle) it's every bit as good as french press coffee, with less cleanup.

Ripple gets the job done too......just kidding!!! It's been years since I made it that way but I do have fond memories of the old process.

Re: New Coffee Thread?

I like cowboy coffee. My friends have gotten into this whole "pour over" method of making coffee. Sure it makes a good cup of coffee, but 20 minutes to make one is just ridiculous..

Re: New Coffee Thread?

I'm a real coffee snob. I try to hit the FBO at 3 PM to catch the Folgers that's been reducing in the automatic drip pot on the burner since 8 AM. Nothing finer in this world have I found.

You guys and your fancy beans and devices...

I laugh that it's become the new preferred hipster method to coffee making, as if some technique and a fancy gooseneck kettle make all the difference. It's the same as a black plastic Melita cone from Albertson's. A good thermometer though really helps, because perfect extraction is all about water temperature.

I have this daily driver coffee maker that is essentially an automatic pour-over machine. It hurts just to say that.

I love my Aeropress but it comes out less often than it used to. I once joked that it looked like a Swedish penis pump, and now my wife makes the joke to literally anyone that sees it-- her parents, the nice old Christian neighbor couple, mailman, doesn't matter.

Re: New Coffee Thread?

I've got six coffee makers at current count. The Mellita drip machine gets the daily use. Zojirushi eh? Hmmmm. I know some of you have six or eight cameras so you know, don't start already. I'm saving up. I just bought a cam and lifters, and a full set of rocker arms for less than what one of these babies cost.

Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh. This one here looks like it might make some of you pretty mad too. Haven't tried one of these:

Re: New Coffee Thread?

Starbucks instant ain't half bad, for the airplane, real lightweight and simple, and it seems to jack me up pretty good. The problem with more complicated procedures is dealing with them, BEFORE I'VE HAD MY COFFEE! At home the plain old Mr. Coffee machine get's the job done. I really appreciate good coffee, but don't want the bother of making it I guess. I have the ZipBoil in the crane, along with the Starbucks.

Re: New Coffee Thread?

At home, I use a Capresso cappuccino maker, since I'm the only coffee drinker here. I like a morning cappuccino. I also have a plain old Mister Coffee drip coffee maker, for when I'd rather have plain coffee, but that's not too often. I do grind my coffee about every other day.

In camp, I use a Bialetti stove top cappuccino maker. I also have a Coleman propane-powered drip coffee maker, to make coffee to share. Anyone who has camped near me knows that all they have to do is bring a cup.

Just this past weekend, I bought a carton of Trader Joe's "breakfast blend" beans. Not bad. Next time I'll try a darker roast, but so far it makes pretty good coffee.

Re: New Coffee Thread?

I don't care as much about how it is made as how it is roasted. I use drip, an espresso maker, mokapot, whatever depending on what is handy and I'm in the mood for. Camping means cowboy coffee.

I do care about the roast. I make my own. It is easy and economical, and is quite a bit better than anything in a 4 dollar cuppa about 9 times out of 10. Even $4 per pound green beans can be made a cut above store bought coffee.

As for being like wine or whatever, I guess the same can be said for anything, really- cantaloupe, sweet corn, or Lifesavers. I have an acquaintance who seems to be particularly interested in coffee roasting and has a commercial sized coffee roaster and expensive coffee beans like these:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak

His eyes gleamed a bit when I mentioned I'd be willing to feed fresh coffee plant cherries to the couple dozen goats in our dairy...perhaps the Boulderites here would appreciate it somehow. Maybe even help separate the beans from the goat dung. I was joking of course. I'm not so sure he knows that. Luckily, US customs doesn't like unprocessed coffee cherries inside its borders, apparently.

On the other hand, some people are more into it than others, it seems:

Does the automatic pour over take 20 minutes per cup as well?
I have another friend that started cold brewing. 24hrs! I'll be damned if I have to plan a day ahead for a cup of coffee!

Re: New Coffee Thread?

Back to Mr701's original post, my wife is from Europe and when she moved here, I had to search high and low to get the Italian Coffee she demanded. Amazon is my friend because they stock Lavazza Quality Oro and that's what my wife requires. Thank goodness I like it too. On the road, any hot drink is fine in the morning. I just need warm liquid to get my voice box going in the morning.

This morning it's a drip coffee machine with my old mug from "Chadwick School" dated 1970.

The school Chadwick was where Joan Crawford sent her children:

We French press at home and camping. Grinder at the house and we pre-grind for trips. Best beans we can buy from local places. Not too coffee-snobbish haha

Re: New Coffee Thread?

Konaloha 100% Kona green beans + Nesco coffee roaster + Aeropress = delicious. We don't do Starbucks or any of the corporate coffee.

Stationed in Hawaii for a bit, the missus is addicted to 100% Kona coffee. We have tried to switch to cheaper stuff, but always come back to Kona.
