Re: Nomex, or No(to)Mex

I just got my latest Sportsman Guide HQ flyer. For someone looking for some Nomex gear this might be of interest. I can't say if these shirts are any good one way or another but they look decent and appear to be reasonably priced.

Re: Nomex, or No(to)Mex

Although not totally aviation related, I can add my 2 cents.

In 2005 or so, the number of horrible burn victims we saw as a result of IEDs in Iraq and AFG forced a revolutionary change in what us ground pounders wore while outside the wire. Up to that point, we were all wearing our regular cammies and Under Armor undergarments (mainly because of their ability to prevent us from smelling like total ass when going days without bathing). The Under Armor shirts and undergarments were soon banned for Marines because they found that they melted to your body. No Bueno!

We first started wearing flight suits because the supply system had them readily available. But soon, the USMC came up with what we now call FROG suits (Flame Resistant Organizational Gear). Basically, a modified version of our standard cammies, but in a flame resistant fabric.

It turned out that outside of the catastrophic wounds that we saw like leg and arm amputations, the severe burns were much more prevalent. Most of those burns were due to the flash of the fireball as a result of the blast (many due to accelerants used by the insurgents such as old WP arty rounds or propane). That is what NOMEX and flame resistant clothing will protect you against. The NOMEX clothing applicable to us is not clothing to rush into a burning house like a fireman, but to provide immediate protection for flash type or contact with fire.

Designed to give you a layer of protection while you execute emergency procedures.

Food for thought based on experience.
