I'm working this weekend, if you guys get weathered out and are looking for a back-up plan next weekend, we are planning on taking the girls to Nehalem Bay for a night or two.
Headed for the Twin Oaks EAA pancake feed this saturday.

Re: Northwest get togethers

If any of you guys are still planning on heading to Orcas by the way of the WIllapa Harbor Oyster Fly-in, it has been pretty much IFR the last three days from my place in Cathlamet west to the ocean, plus up and down the coast. Tried to fly into Ilwaco today and ceilings were pretty much 600-800 feet once you hit 15 miles out of Astoria.

The wx has got the best of me. Not good enough for this Maule pilot.

Re: Northwest get togethers

It's 4th and long & I think it's time to punt. I have been watching the weather forcast and it has been getting worse all week. Anyone have a better idea, cause I'm still going somewhere.
I was thinking of Tieton State (4S6), Prosser (S40), or Lake Wenatchee (27W). Some good info from this discussion. Having a place to walk to get food/beer/wine is always nice too, that makes me think of Prosser. Any other ideas?

Re: Northwest get togethers

I took a half day today. Was planning on heading up this afternoon. Sat looks crappy. Would do Tieton or somewhere else too if people are heading there.

Update. My buddy is heading over to Tieton now with beer, kabob meat (and some other stuff), and a bottle of wine.

Well, if the wind/tstms get to you in the mountains and you end up in Prosser, look me up. I am the only Corliss in the book in Prosser and 2.5 m from the airport. I hope to get up for a while tomorrow too.

Re: Northwest get togethers

I think I will try to check out Prosser in the afternoon, and head to Tieton Saturday evening. I'm getting a later start, picking up a buddy in SLE at noonish. 8)

Re: Northwest get togethers

I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

I flew into SLE to pick up my buddy who was going to Tieton with me, and that place was hopping. They were having an Aviation day or something, and when I showed up at noon, I was #3 out of 6 to land and there were 3 waiting to take off. They were issuing LAHSO instructions, and had me switch runways on a 1 mile final. Kind of exciting for a place where I don't usually see much traffic. After landing I called the weather service to get a standard briefing for the rest of the trip, and sure enough, a TFR close to Tieton. So we just headed to Prosser for a quick overnight.

Prosser is a nice airport with a cool little camp spot. Firewood is staked up there waiting to become caveman TV, and one of the Wineries has a Tahoe there as a courtesy car. We headed into town to find a burger and a cold foamy and came up with Whitstran brewery and were happy.

If you don't mind being in town, I recommend Prosser as a nice place to stay and get some grub. 8)

Re: Northwest get togethers

Tieton looks like so much fun. I can't wait to take my first flying/camping trip. Been wanting to hit the coast, but it has been overcast there every day lately. I was up in Eugene last Thursday dropping off some paperwork and did a low pass over Crow. My uncle lives in Veneta and is good friends with the owner of the strip. I would like to make a trip up to visit. I am show it is suppose to be over 100 in Southern Oregon on Saturday (ugh!)

A buddy of mine says Tieton is in good condition. The water levels are high too. If you have a raft you could launch from the end of the runway without walking through a bunch of mud. Note, there is no cell or internet access (at least with my buddies carrier), which makes it difficult to check if a TFR pops up. Don't expect any ground crew in the area to give correct information or the presence of other civilian aircraft in and out of the strip as an indication.

Bring earplugs. The campers can be a little noisy. There may also be a christian camp or something nearby. Very loud christian rock was being played two nights in a row.

Beautiful area and recommended. Goose Egg mountain makes a nice cross country hike.

Re: Northwest get togethers

The water being up would be a big plus. When I was there before, the water was extremely low, so a walk down to the water involved about a half mile of mud. PITA & messy- took all the fun out of it.

Re: Northwest get togethers

We had a great time at Manzanita last weekend. Pam(wife), myself, Dave, Gena, and Chad.
Just enough fog to keep the temps down(and enjoy a camp fire) but still fly.
Not much for pics, but Pam took some video with her iPhone that made us laugh, Dave and I took a run in the Stinson.........the girls found the beer :D .
Turn up the volume when the music quits :?
