Still thinkin about the fly in, I really want to go but I'm not sure how my daughter would handle the 5 hr flight.

Whee-

It seems like there are a number of wives and kids coming. Would be great to see you!

T shirts are being made as we speak! I hope to give out more than 20!

The only other thing I would add is...bring a pumpkin or two... The moon is going to be full!

Re: Oct 27-28 High Sierra Fly In

Were going to miss you pops and the others that have things on their agenda!

Just a bump here. Weather for the early part of the week is going to be fun around here but the long range is looking very good now. Have heard from a good number of flyers coming. Betting we have at least 20 planes or more now...Even the famous RED Mooney! I know of at least 8 that have not logged in here that are coming for certain.

Getting anxious...

Re: Oct 27-28 High Sierra Fly In

Well I have some pumpkins that just so happen to fit out my window...just in case I should need em! Also I am bringing a carved pumpkin since this would typically be the time for a holloween party. It's goingto be a little party!
So I see we have rain forcasted all week in the Valley and some snow in the Hills. If this dry lake bed gets too wet and no good will we have an alternate? :?: Either way still excited!

Re: Oct 27-28 High Sierra Fly In

Will see where we are come mid week. I have a feeling this will be more of a wind storm than anything else. We may get some snow here in the Sierra but betting it will be up high. The Forecasters have a tendency to get over animated when we get our first precip around here. I will be anxious to see how much actually spills over and how much actually stays to the north. Most recent Fx talks of it splitting and that generally means the weather guys will start changing their tune next. Weekend still looks very good.

My real job (the one that pays the gas in the plane) is a forecaster / snow farmer... #-o

As mentioned in the Fx discussion I have pasted here, most precip will be falling north of lake Tahoe / North of I 80 and not much in the way of precip east of the Sierra crest. The discussion below supports this, but then again its everyone guess:

http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=REV&StateCode=CA&SafeCityName=Truckee

I will fly out on Thursday/Friday to confirm. We have a lot of folks coming. Keeping it safe is the priority but I am betting we will be good.

Blowing hard out now...Glad I did not fly to Utah in my plane

Stay tuned

You don't do this? Put some soap on the plane, rub, then go fly. I had to fly to the dry side of the Cascades to winterize my 2nd home. It was interesting. hahaha

Re: Oct 27-28 High Sierra Fly In

I think it has been very short lived on the lake bed so far...here is a great camera image of Topaz Lake (20 miles or so to the south).

http://www.topazlakervpark.com/web_cam.html

This is one of my favorites: Its what is / has gone on...from observers
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/rev/mapData/local.php

Radar image has also looked good today (The lake bed is below the "r" in Carson shown here. You can also click "storm total" on this and its showing a Trace amount so far
http://www.usairnet.com/weather/radar/?station=krgx
OR
http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=rgx&product=NTP&overlay=11101111&loop=no

The best thing has been the winds blowing all the moisture out of the storm east of the crest. 90 mph an hour ago
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/rev/remotedata/newsqwsmt.php
And Virginia Peak
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/rev/remotedata/newvirpk.php

Winding down here in Tahoe as well now. The Sierra crest has recieved a lot of snow but thankfully thats where most of the moisture collects. The lake bed is protected by the Sierra Crest, the Carson Range also gives way to a shadow. Will fly out on Thursday to see how we are doing.

Its going to be good to go

I like your optimism and enthusiasm, Kevin!
I'm planning on being there, even if it's just to drag my wheels and check the surface.
See you there!

Re: Oct 27-28 High Sierra Fly In

Things are still looking very good!

The weekends forecast could not be better! Warm and no wind!

Just spoke to someone in Minden and they confirmed no real moisture at all has fallen over the past 48 hours. Their dirt runway is dry as a bone! My buddy in Carson confirmed the same. Said it was dry. Only snow in the hills. We are on! One more little shot of moisture coming tonight but we are good to go I am betting!

Not much in the way of precip out east...Topaz is dry!

How we looking at your house Gump? I am going to fly out on Thursday. Want me to pick you up for a ride out and a look see?

Will be flying over your house on the way as I will be taking out a bunch of firewood.

Re: Oct 27-28 High Sierra Fly In

I won't be home until Thursday eve, but then I'm off the rest of the weekend. So far all we've had is a little rain, but the ground is in good shape. I'll buzz over Friday for a bit, and plan on O' nighting Saturday.

I am interested in attending High Sierra as a first timer. Can anyone give me a checklist of equipment I will need, advice, and anything else? Thanks in advance.

We would love to have you!

Tent, sleeping bag, chair, etc...

Maybe bring a good liver for Saturday night.

I am planing on having a bunch of stuff to eat saturday night by the fire. (Meat, chix).

If anyone wants to bring some side dishes that would be great. Pumpkins for dropping, shooting and whatever else we can think up. ITS ALSO A FULL MOON!

The flying around there has a bunch of options.

I will be out there Saturday mid morning or at least close by flying.

Re: Oct 27-28 High Sierra Fly In

Bring a happy face and something warm for the night.Something to throw on the fire for dinner.Last time there was a ton of grub being passed around as it was being cooked.Chair, booze , camera ,Good pair of shoes as it is pretty cool to venture up on the surrounding hills in the middle of the night.Gun .........Water.... Most likely going to get a bit chilly at night so brink whatever gives you a warm fuzzy.....not hard to bum a cup of coffee in the am if you don't bring your own.If you do forget something I bet somebody else can help you out that remembered to bring it .Very sharing bunch these BCPers..... :D

The only chatter I've ever heard on that freq , was what sounded like a random assignment to a jet for Reno..... Once . Doesn't mean they are not listening. 8)
