Re: Show us your HANGAR!

what's to show... I got my fridge with a good supply of beer and a bottle of 18 year old single malt... a sofa and room for the Maule... the rest is full of storage that my wife and daughter think is important... Mostly their stuff is in there... and I get a lot of shit about my Maule being so damn expensive a hobby.... goes in one ear and out the other though..... I recently refused to make room for a china cabinet. by the way here's a little story all might be interrested in.... just last week folks in my hangar row saw 6 guys wandering up and down the rows stopping and looking in every open hangar and asking lots of questions....two of them wore border patrol uniforms , the other 4 wore suits... they didn't enter but open doors made them stop and look in each one.... questions were along the lines of,,,,"what's in those cans" , ""any new people move into hangars here lately", "You have two hangars?" When asked by our property manager what was going on they replied,,,," a training exercise"....I showed up after they left so I didn't have the pleasure of slamming the door in their face....anyone else have this sort of experience?

After this long winter this may describe me better than my plane but either way a proper hangar is critical to protecting your investment from the elements. And there's nothing like stepping out of the house in the morning with a hot cup of joe, and walking over to the hangar to behold your aircraft. In that case, a hangar is worth a whole lot more...

I just drive my Class B RV in the back and I am good to go.

It has a flush toilet, shower, sink, 26 gallons of water, microwave, 3-way refrigerator, hot water heater, 2 heating systems, air conditioning, 2800 KW Onans Cummins generator, tons of storage and a very comfortable bed.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

Mine likes a holy (or wholly) mess by comparison:

Image

Had to use the car with a tow strap to open and close the doors--frozen at the bottom. Truly one of the worst designs I can imagine--a 1 1/2" groove cut in the concrete, with 1 1/4" square tubing welded to the bottom frame of the doors to guide the door bottoms. So the groove fills with snow, and then when that melts from the sun, it freezes. Yesterday, it was about 20F, and there was enough sunlight on the hangar doors in the afternoon to melt the snow. Although I dug as much of it out as I could, some of it was as hard as the concrete and jammed up the doors.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

I don't have a good pic of the hanger I'm renting ($160/mo) but it's heated and the owner's previous aircraft was a 210 the same vintage as mine. Being an A&P, the hanger is completely equipped with just about every tool/supplies needed, including some that have been specifically made/modded for working on my plane. When I moved in, he said, if you can find it, you can use it. Any consumables we cover by just rounding up the bill to the next half hour or hour. It was essentially a plug and play hanger and I feel lucky to be there! Plus I get to share the hanger with a good friend.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

@ Nizina : Wow .

I wonder if I were to build a hangar what width I would want to make it. I build a 24x36 garage and it is already crammed.

Some aircraft like the Backcountry BOSS have a wingspan that is 40 feet plus. (Their website says just under 40 feet, but in fact that 4 place has a 12 inch wider fuse so add that tip to tip.)

Are 45 foot wide hangars an anomaly for bush planes ? Obviously Kitfox owners etc. have it easy.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

I would go at least 45 or 46'. Even a 180 with wing X would be tight. Id rather have it a foot too wide rather then an inch on each side of my strobes....

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

I'd recommend 48 feet if possible. Around here, the price difference between a 40 ft steel truss vs 48 isn't enough to blink an eye at. Now 48 to 50, that's a different story!

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

Ours is 42' and its tight. 50' would be ideal.

My hangar is 42' wide by 36 deep and is all I need for my Husky. It would be nice to have it a bit wider and deeper, but more is money. Wider would be best as I have built work benches around the perimeter and that means that I have to walk under the wings rather then around the tips -- but that's OK with me. Snow load is a major consideration if you are out in the middle of nowhere, and that clear span across the front can get expensive. But you shouldn't have any problem finding a hangar kit that would accommodate a 40' wing span.

I'm in the process of building second hangar from scratch for my wife's Aerotrek (about the size of a Kitfox) to the same dimensions as my Husky hangar. With the smaller airplane I'll have plenty of room for filling it up with other things.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

Just a muni hangar with some improved lighting! Nothing special, but at $121 per month, I'm saving my pennies for a nice place like "Tcraft"

Jeez MAU MAU 2800KW !! That's 2.8 megawatts, what else you got going in there we can't see. That's enough to power a small town.
