Summer Campfire Nights

I had a great idea this morning. Well I think it is a great idea. Stand by for more info later today. I have to go mow grass and fly. I'll post my idea later.

It involves campfire, food, BS, flying, camping and drinking.

Good day

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

C'mon already! How much grass you got to mow? I'm confined to the workplace here, and could use a little something to ponder for the rest of the day.

Re: Summer Campfire Nights

This is targeted towards the NW Oregon SW Washington crew. Sorry for the bad pics it was getting dark. I'll get some better ones.

Last night we stopped in at Sandy River airstrip, on the banks of the Sandy River and in the shadow of 11235' Mt Hood. This place is owned by Jack and Georgia Hoffman. Jack is the gray haired guy on the Gold Rush TV show on Discovery Channel.
Todd is Jacks son. Center. Jack is to the right.

Anyway I have got to be friends with Paul the airport manager while Jack and Todd are in Alaska shooting a new season of Gold Rush. Jacks wife Georgia was there yesterday when we landed. The airport gets very little use. They thought it would be great if we came by any time and camped out. There is everything we need. Fire wood bathrooms and showers.

The lodge is way cool.

How many times do we plan to go somewhere and the wx is bad? I would suspect now most of us have every weekend through summer booked.

So I was thinking how how about a micro fly out mid week. When we see good wx just pick a day and leave after work. Meet at Sandy River. Fly for a hour or so including BS ing with who ever comes buy when we land. There are 2 more grass strips with in 5 minutes of Sandy River. So that makes 3.

After that head back to Sandy River have dinner and camp fire and few drinks and call it a night. Get up in the morning what ever time you need to, to get to work. As long as you don't get hammered I think it would be fun.

If we do this when the wx is nice all you would need is cot and sleeping bag. Tent optional. Sleep under the wing.

I'll bet we could do the same thing at several strips with in 45 minutes of Portland. These come to mind. They are all grass strips except for Cascade Locks has both.

Sandy River 10min. Daybreak 9min, Flying M 21min, Eagle Nest Ranch 9min, McKenzie Bridge 45 min, Cascade Locks 16min, Port Elsnor 26min, Fantasy Field 36min, Watts 22min. I know the owners, or have connections to these places and I can get permission.

I'm in, would be a blast. I haven't been to some of those strips yet.
Reds might be another good spot if he is ok with it.

All we need is some real nice wx and we'll try this. I'll bet we get more guys when we say we are going.

Re: Summer Campfire Nights

You are thinking of Stan Jost (74OR) I haven't been to his strip yet but he said to stop by sometime.
Said something about a modified pattern due to big transmission lines, sounds like fun.

Reds Field (18OR) is 2 or 3 miles SE of Amity. He owns the prettiest 185 I have ever seen.

His field is private though and requires express permission from him.

He gave me permission a couple of years ago, I have been in there only a half dozen times, not wanting to take advantage of him being neighborly.

As noted above I don't know if he would ok with a group of planes.

Rob,

I am up for some mid week camps. It would be an easy flight for me and I am looking forward to getting to know your "neck of the woods".

Hi Paul: great! I plan on doing one at Sandy River as soon as we get some good wx. I would be happy to show you more strips if you have some extra time the morning after. Our strips are not hard like Idaho but they are pretty. The rivers are all blown out now so no river bars. Plenty of grass.

Cheers...Rob
