Re: Summer Campfire Nights

Rob,

Unfortunately I have to fly to Reno on Saturday and with the winds that are forecast I may not be back before Monday. My wife has come up with the strange notion that a Maule can be used for transportation and is more than just a backcountry camping machine (heresy ?). Since I just returned yesterday from camping at Cabin Creek ( breakfast at Dixietown and Flying B ) and last week I camped at Moose Creek and hiked the East Fork I do not have a leg to stand on.

I am really going to miss seeing that strip. Lets hope we have another couple of chances this summer.

Unless Salem has changed, they only serve breakfast Sat. & Sun. Courtesy cars and cheap gas ($5/gal) are always available at Lebanon, OR. Safe flying and enjoy :!:

It involves campfire, food, BS, flying, camping and drinking.

Hey John, Salem is open 7 days a week now. Till 9PM I think. You are right on breakfast. Don't open till 11. DOH

Only me and Terry? I guess I'll bring the really expensive adult beverages then.

NWS Sandy Oregon forcast
Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 73.
Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75.

Cheers...Rob

This is the weirdest darn summer I can remember. Forecast has changed again. I guess we will see what Monday brings. The wx man and his computers can seem to make up their minds.

NWS
Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 78. West wind between 3 and 8 mph.

Monday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56. West northwest wind between 5 and 8 mph becoming calm.

Tuesday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 70. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Cheers

Well Terry, wx looking not so good. I think we should reschedule for a day with sun. Will we ever get sun? Yes we will. 100% clouds and 30% percip. In Sandy that means it will rain. The cloud forecast is 1000-1900 Tuesday morning at Troutdale. That means you might not get out of Sandy.

Re: Summer Campfire Nights

Exciting thread considering I am a local...

I just need an airplane now

If I recall correctly, the OPA was attempting to promote a "tour Oregon by Air this summer" poker-run type of event. Perhaps we can tie-in some of these fields into their mix for next year, eh? ...and maybe schedule a grass-strip mini fly-in like twice a month next summer...different airport every time, just bring something to grill, a chair, sleeping bag, and stories to tell...

...just random thoughts :P

Count me in as well, any reason we can't do it when a big high pressure lands this winter?

Re: Summer Campfire Nights

We never got to do this last season.

OregonMaule wrote:This is targeted towards the NW Oregon SW Washington crew. Sorry for the bad pics it was getting dark. I'll get some better ones.

Last night we stopped in at Sandy River airstrip, on the banks of the Sandy River and in the shadow of 11235' Mt Hood. This place is owned by Jack and Georgia Hoffman. Jack is the gray haired guy on the Gold Rush TV show on Discovery Channel.
Todd is Jacks son. Center. Jack is to the right.

Anyway I have got to be friends with Paul the airport manager while Jack and Todd are in Alaska shooting a new season of Gold Rush. Jacks wife Georgia was there yesterday when we landed. The airport gets very little use. They thought it would be great if we came by any time and camped out. There is everything we need. Fire wood bathrooms and showers.

The lodge is way cool.

How many times do we plan to go somewhere and the wx is bad? I would suspect now most of us have every weekend through summer booked.

So I was thinking how how about a micro fly out mid week. When we see good wx just pick a day and leave after work. Meet at Sandy River. Fly for a hour or so including BS ing with who ever comes buy when we land. There are 2 more grass strips with in 5 minutes of Sandy River. So that makes 3.

After that head back to Sandy River have dinner and camp fire and few drinks and call it a night. Get up in the morning what ever time you need to, to get to work. As long as you don't get hammered I think it would be fun.

If we do this when the wx is nice all you would need is cot and sleeping bag. Tent optional. Sleep under the wing.

I'll bet we could do the same thing at several strips with in 45 minutes of Portland. These come to mind. They are all grass strips except for Cascade Locks has both.

Sandy River 10min. Daybreak 9min, Flying M 21min, Eagle Nest Ranch 9min, McKenzie Bridge 45 min, Cascade Locks 16min, Port Elsnor 26min, Fantasy Field 36min, Watts 22min. I know the owners, or have connections to these places and I can get permission.

Do you wish to opine?

This weekend is to nice to not try this!!

I say Sandy River Saturday night. Hit some local grass. Sunday morning go hit Flying M for breakfast and more local grass.

Come on Oregon guys we hardly ever get this type of weather!!!!

I'm thinking of getting there 5-7 camp fire Jeremiah Weed flaming shots. NOT!!!! I'm never drinking that again.

Keep it simple, cooler, something to cook on the fire, send Paul out for pizza, bag, chair, sleep under the wing.

Saturday Clear. High of 82F. Breezy. Winds from the ENE at 10 to 20 mph.
Saturday Night Clear. Low of 52F. Winds less than 5 mph.

Who is in??

Re: Summer Campfire Nights

Ifthe east wind is blowing, Sandy River is a little more tricky. You will see an alley through the trees. Use it! Get your plane slowed down!! NO! 70MPH finals or we will be scraping your plane. SLOW!

Thanks for putting this together Rob. It's a great Idea. Unfortunately, I can't make it. I'll be in BC this weekend. Take lots of pictures.

Spend all day Saturday with her. Take her shopping and buy her some shoes. By plane to Seaside of course. Then at 5 go to Sandy River. Sunday breakfast at Flying M and back to Troutdale by 10. Then to Mothers Day with my mom and Lisa's mom.

See how easy it is. That is the whole concept behind these mini fly inns.

Cheers buddy, we will have a cold one 4U :D
