Most everyone agrees the 80 lb gas steering springs are better than 100s. I am going to start building suspensions next week for sale. I will offer a choice of either coil over or Air shocks. My guess is the coil overs are going to work best for the Bearhawk.

Yeah, we're sold on the coil overs. I guess we'll wait until Blackrock gets it put together and try it out. If past experience is any indication, that probably won't be long. You can reserve a production slot for Maverick and I and we'll send you money as soon as Mike is kind enough to give us a ride. I assume the air spring 80's are softer and more responsive than the 100's. I'm pretty excited.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

Okay Blackrock, I'm taking you up on the over to keep LSA in this thread.
Graham volunteered to be dead weight to see how the system squishes. We basically did an Aerocross® run through the bean fields, a pipeyard, and Petroleum Point.
I tried to drop it in a couple times hard but it doesn't look like much because it seems to do what it's supposed to.
It steers great with chains.
I'll be the tester to see how long it lasts without a sock.
I can't think of anything else to report but can answer questions.
Dan likely can answer most questions better than me, and truly, watching the video tells me more than actually flying.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

Great video, Greg! Love the way the TW hugs the ground like a good suspension should. Sure am glad Dan came out with these. As Phil said, they are a game changer and I couldn't agree more.

I learned a lot from my video, too. I'm very much a novice; you've got it dialed in.

Any chance that these will ever be available for certified cubs?

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

I can't field the certified questions, but I forgot to tell you guys it works great on pavement! I tried to side load it a little at high speed and it just sticks in there like a race car.

Very complete review, thanks! I am sold. I always enjoy your videos, and watched all you have when I first found them =D> =D>

I have a question: would you happen to know what your tailwheel weight is unloaded? And finally tailwheel weight with the rear passenger? I am trying to decide if I need the 500 Lb., or 750Lb. spring.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

If you have a cub certified under CAR4a, tailwheels are specifically NOT certificated. I wonder if that means you can swap out the leaf spring for one of these babies.

See page 24, 04a.442 - Tailwheels may be of any type and are not certificated.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

Thanks. In the three point config my tail weighs about 70 lbs solo (front seat) and around 80 with 140 lbs in the back seat.
I didn't weigh it with Graham but I did easily lift the tail with him seated, so I am guessing with a 220 pound passenger the tail isn't much more--90 max.
Keyword is guessing though.

It stick in my head my tail weighs ~63 lbs in the flying config. Empty.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

I'll add that I don't know the business side of things or the engineering (how many models there will be--I'm just your friendly neighborhood crash test dummy, but it seems possible Dan could tweak the geometry a little bit to make a 750 pound spring work with anything. There was a big difference between test one and two for me and all suspension hardware stayed the same--angles changed.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

There is a delicate balance with the Geometry and pressures. The difference between the first and second version of the Rans was less than 1/2 inch. I have the Light suspension on my full size cub, beating the h... out of it. I do have a heavier spring, and so far all is good.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

Thought I would update you all with our new website and LSA model. Its a single spring unit that is also a direct replacement for the steel spring. It weighs just over 4 pounds assembled. You can find all the product and ordering information here: http://supercubsnorth.com/

Email me at [email protected] with your questions.

Thanks!

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

As far a certified airplanes go...

On the J-3/PA-11 TCDS
"103. Tail Skid +4 lb. (+190)"

Sounds like the T3 it fits the description to me.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

I'm as eager to spend my hard earned money on new stuff for the plane as most, but so far I haven't felt the excitement others have over this (or any) new tail wheel suspension. It looks like it works great I mean, but I'm not sure how much of an issue I have on my current setup (I use a 3 leaf J-3 leaf spring on the S-7S, I never liked their kit supplied single leaf) I'll go back and re-read the entire thread on the subject. What am I missing here..... maybe I just don't spend enough time taxing with the tail down? I WANT to WANT one, and maybe it's partially because I've been spending all my spare cash on electric bikes lately ( three of them now...) but I'm struggling trying to see how it's a "game changer" for me anyway. Going to 29" Airstreaks, that was a changer, as was going to Roberts dampened rebound cub style gear, big time change, this seems less so but damn I want one anyway just need a bit of a nudge as to why. If it was lighter or less drag then what I have, that would push me over the edge, I'm a sucker for lighter anything.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

Ok Bobby, I did t know you were the sales force for this Outfit and your dad even rested his weary head here a couple nights ago!

I hear you Simko! If you haven't needed one in 20 years why start now?

I've tested out a handful of equipment (some thanks to you) and I believe enough in it to buy a second one! I figure if the tail never bounces on the Yankee Hotel the buyer will feel 30% happier with the purchase. I just taxied through the field and decided it was the right thing to do after hearing the banging around back there of a bouncing wheel.

PS I'm not getting kickbacks but might find a way to write the videos off on my taxes. It's for a good cause I think? Those missionary cowboys figured out the loophole.

Re: T3 Tailwheel Suspension

I think this is a great little invention! The rough terrain that some of us land our airplanes on, this T3 Tailwheel Suspension will obsorb the shock to the airframe so much better, and you will get less rebound over the conventional spring with this set-up. It's a no brainer for me to install this on my airplane!

Just got the new coil-over suspension from Dan. Will get it installed shortly, replacing my dual shock T3 and post a report.

Oops, forgot to post a report on the single coil over. Ended up with too much lateral play for the SQ2 so I went back to the Dual Gas-shocks T3.
