Great work!

#9 is the worst one in that wing and it's being replaced along with #10. I could repair 10 with a stiffener...but hey, that's more weight and since I have it wide open, it's getting replaced.

The left wing has about 20 parts to get replaced. The pictures above don't show it, but at some point, there was a previous repair on the left wing leading edge area where someone did repairs without recovering the wing. All kinds of "extra" parts in there to stiffen it up and keep the leading edge skin from being buckled. They added stiffeners on the nose ribs too to keep from replacing them, so all of those are being replaced as well.

When I posted the left wing pictures on Saturday I felt pretty good about it, but after I got the rest of the fabric off yesterday, I noticed all the damage to the leading edge skin. After I flipped the wing and started pulling that skin off is when I noticed all the old damage that had been repaired that I'm going to just replace.

Can you take some photos of the madras tip nose ribs and how they are attached to the wing spar? The ones supplied with my plane don't look right and I'm thinking of fabbing new ones but any reference photos would be appreciated.

Don

Can do Don. I dug through all my paperwork today looking for the drawings, but only found the "instructions" and the brochure. I'd like to get some drawings too so I can ensure it's done right. I have most of the replacement parts fabricated, I still need to make two more though.

There are no "new" nose ribs for the tips, it uses the same stock formers, but there's a full length rib that is new with the mod. There are some pieces that attach to the spar tip extensions that the new full length rib attaches to. Then there's 2 new leading edge skins that go on the front since the original ones taper back for the rounded tip.

I'll get some photos to post for you from the undamaged tip.

Hey Don, took some photos of the undamaged right wing and some of the opened up / damaged left wing. Hope this answers some questions for you. If you need some other specific shots, let me know.

Re: Tadpole's Stinson project #2...

Mostly relaxed today. I sat with the parts manual and made a list of all the parts I need to repair the wings. Univair is just up the road and I'll be getting at least a few parts there, but a friend has a spare set of wings and might make me a deal on most of the parts I need, we'll see.

I moved fuel tanks, ailerons, flaps, and random parts out to the hangar and brought home the Madras fabricated replacement parts I've had collecting dust for a year home.

Won't get much done this coming week. Work, graduate courses starting, and going camping this coming weekend. Maybe I'll at least source the parts and have them on their way.

I love the look of Stinson's and give you much credit in tackling this project.

These two videos make me want to get one myself.

Thanks for the link to the photos. I need to study them more to see how my nose ribs attach. I have the madras tip installation instructions and drawings.

I got the rest of the right wing uncovered today (the undamaged one) and noticed that the first nose rib in from the new tip rib looked to be homemade, not even like the rest of the Madras parts I have. It's different than the crushed one on the left wing. I'm thinking someone just "winged" that part at some point.

Didn't plan on it, but after I got off work today, I changed, grabbed some beers, and went out into the "shop" to just look at a wing. Five hours later I realized how late it had gotten, but I made more progress that I hadn't planned on. Nice thing about having part of the plane at home.

Tadpole, I think those would fit in the living room nicely. Then you could work on them while watching sports.

Re: Tadpole's Stinson project #2...

No progress to report on. I thought I was going to get most of the wing parts from a friend who has spare wings, but that wasn't going to work out. So I'm holding for a bit longer to have enough cash on hand to get all the wings parts in one visit to Univair. Have most of the cash, just need a bit more, so it won't be long and I'll have a truck full of parts and then I can knock out the wing repairs. Crap, that means I need to get my order prepped for covering supplies and paint!

Covering supplies sure, but take it from someone who's been there, don't order paint till 2 weeks before you KNOW you're going to spray.

Those wings are gonna be nice!

Haha, ya. My last project, I ordered paint when I ordered the covering supplies and I never got to use it. The new owner finally did though.

Re: Tadpole's Stinson project #2...

Hangar's done. Moved the fuselage over to it today, after I temp installed the vert and horizontal for some extra weight on the back end.

Had to stop though, we ran over my 2yr old son when pushing the plane. We were pushing tail first and he got behind my wife and tripped, fell on his belly, and the right main rolled up on the back of his left leg. Pretty nastly looking road rash in the beginning. X-rays all good, he's just scraped up pretty good.

Tomorrow I drive 6hrs to Durango for a memorial service for a friend that crashed in Idaho a few weeks ago.

Monday I'll move the rest of my stuff from the old T-hangar to the new one and may even get some of my shop from the garage moved over.

Spacious!

Looking good Jason. Glad your boy is ok, at least the plane was quite a bit lighter without the wings on!
