Vernier assist throttle

I have been wanting one of this for a long time.
Got my McFarlane throttle cable with vernier.
Really liking it, slow canyon speeds are easier to achieve with precision, also descends, just turn 4 counterclockwise turns and it reduces an inch of MP, its helps flying the plane with precision, highly recommend it.

Re: Vernier throttle

Did you get the “Vernier Assist” control or a generic vernier control?

Generic one is a little dangerous in a Cessna, doesn’t have the swaged section that the throttle mount can clamp down on. Also requires putting an oversized hole in your panel.

Re: Vernier throttle

Guess I’m too much of a throttle jockey. I don’t like ‘em. Glad you’re getting along well with it though.

Vernier Assist, and also works as a standard push and pull throttle of course.

Re: Vernier throttle

There was a vernier throttle in my last airplane when I bought it.
I found it hard to make fine throttle adjustments when landing.
Put a standard throttle back in, much better.
I do like a vernier mixture though.

Re: Vernier throttle

I am both a throttle jockey AND a lover of my MacFarlane vernier throttle.....especially the dual cable version made for the dual carb Rotax. Gross RIGHT NOW power adjustments are just as easy, as are miniscule ones. Best of all it always holds exactly the power setting I want.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

Quick explanation to get rid of any confusion...

The Vernier "ASSIST" throttle is not like the standard Vernier controls. They DO NOT have a button you have to push. They work just like a standard throttle control but have the ability for fine tune adjustments by twisting the control like a vernier one. They also do have a lock collar at the base of the throttle like a standard one. I put one on the 0-470 Stinson and installed a custom length one on a Murphy Moose... They work really well and I highly recommend them for throttle control.

That’s what I was picturing as well, the push button on the throttle is a PITA.

But here is what I believe Motadve has installed. Looks like it’s a pretty nice set up!

Good to hear this PIREP - I've got vernier assist throttle going into my new panel.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

Best of both worlds , you get the standard throttle push and pull(no button) and vernier for finer adjustments.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

I have been intrigued by these since seeing the Grey Maule vids from Alaska. I think it would be very nice for those tiny adjustments. Not a cheap cable though.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

Dunno who came up with it, but that "vernier-assist" set-up is a great idea.
But yeah, pretty spendy compared to a standard throttle.
I can already make pretty fine adjustments with my standard cable, esp if the locking collar is a bit loose.
Fine enough anyways-- so for me, it's kind of a solution in search of a problem.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

I have a "Standard" vernier control throttle cable, and I uniformly HATE the damn thing. Maules used to use these things from the factory, and I hated those as well.

This "Sorta" vernier control sounds much better.

That said, I'd never install a standard vernier throttle on an airplane, and when I work up the courage, this one's coming out.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

That's pretty cool, had never heard of this style cable. I use vernier throttles in bonanzas for work and after a couple hours they just become normal, no complaints. This looks like the best of both worlds though.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

I had one in my 150/150 and didn’t like it. If that’s all you ever used it would be ok but going the other way I think it would take some time to get used to.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

The big deal for the Rotax users, is unlike the single cable throttle setups, that usually use some kind of mixer to end up with two cables going to the dual carbs, the dual cable McFarlane is just that, dual cables from the get go. And the cables and their connecting fittings are real high quality, point being the dual carbs are much easier to sync, and they stay synced.

I had a bit of a learning curve with mine, as I moved my throttle location to the panel (from my left hand down on the side) at the same time I bought the new setup, so different throttle actuation AND location all at once. I also moved my flap handle at the same time, to where the old throttle used to be.....but after a few confusing mishaps it all fell into place (momentary panic is a great and quick teacher) and is as natural in use as my old setup, but better.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

For a power pitch approach, especially in gusty conditions, throttle must be an active and dynamic control. This improvement to Mauls and other fine tune Vernier throttles sounds very good.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

Just for the sake of rounding out the pool of opinions. I love my stock Maule push button vernier. Guess I'm in the minority, but I would never switch back to a non-vernier if I had a choice. Though the assist does sound like the best of both worlds.

Re: Vernier assist throttle

Wow! It always surprises me the strong opinions about throttle type.
I’ve gone back and forth between vernier and push pull type (as well as left hand throttle on single seat/tandem type stick aircraft) on a daily basis, and I never gave it more than a passing thought.
The new vernier assist looks really nice, though.
