Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...Airworthiness Certificate issu

Thanks guys! Looks like we got the leak fixed and my dad flew the plane yesterday evening.

John, I’ll definitely have to come up for a visit.

I think I fixed the video link.

Did that fix the low oil pressure too? How are your CHT’s?

No, oil pressure is still on the low side. Spec is 30-60psi at cruise. We are seeing 30-32psi.

CHTs have been cool, highest being 360F, but the engine hasn’t been throughly heat soaked yet. A 20min flight flight isn’t enough to tell how anything is doing.

Did you put a new spring in the pressure relief or did you use the old one? Might be worth the few $$ to try s new spring.

I put a new springs in it; this style takes 2 springs.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...Airworthiness Certificate issu

Have you checked the indicated oil pressure in the cockpit against a calibrated device? I know of one engine shop that says if you have them do the overhaul, they already checked the pressure and would rather you don't mess with the engine based on what your cockpit indication is until you have verified that it is correct.

Whee's Bearhawk Project...Airworthiness Certificate issued!

Thanks Kurt! It has been a long time coming. Now to enjoy the result.

I hear ya Troy, thanks. The EFIS manufacturer says if the oil pressure indicates zero before starting then it is accurate. I still plan to check the oil pressure with a manual gauge when I pull the cowl next. I’d really like to get an couple hours of run time on the engine before I do more ground running.

My friend, this seems illogical in the grand scheme of death prevention. #-o :P Are you just concerned about overheating the engine during ground running?

Haha, point taken. If I was at all suspicious of an erroneous indication I would agree. I'm confident that the indication is correct and that the relief valve isn't adjusted properly or something else. The pressure is still in the green so I'm comfortable flying the plane but when we pull the cowl after the next couple flights we will take the precaution and verify the gauge.

Glazing the cylinders is my main concern with additional ground running. Being cautions while still properly breaking in a fresh engine is proving challenging on a new EAB airplane. But yeah, death prevention is number one. Can't wait to see how you balance that risk Z.
