I'm not necessarily a backcountry pilot but more for the lack of funding than the lack of trying.
I'm based in the SLC area and was invited to a wedding up in AK. I reached out to a good friend and former employee of pburns who lived local and he graciously invited me to stay in his home and drive his vehicle even though he would be out of town. Since I already made the trek for the wedding and had a free place to stay I figured I would do some flight training while in town. It is Alaska, afterall.
Monday I started my tailwheel endorsement in Blue River Aviation's 85hp Champ 7BCM. We did an hour of ground, some stalls, dutch rolls, and steep turns, and finally 3 takeoffs and landings.
Tuesday we got more into it, logging 27 landings of the 3 point variety both on the hard surfaced runway and eventually moving to the parallel gravel strip.
Weds and Thurs I spent time with my ladyfriend and a childhood best friend exploring the area while the CFI took a his weekend. Early this morning I dropped them off at the International and I'll be staying for another 9 days to explore this vast playground and further my training.
Today we got back to it and started the session with exploring the Knik Glacier and Lake George region.
Following that we moved onto wheeled landings, logging another 17 landings.
We're taking tomorrow off and hopefully I'll get signed off for the TW endorsement Sunday after one-wheeled landings. Then the fun begins of exploring the backcountry and mountain strips in the region.
Snapped a shot of a Beaver on floats enjoying the lake
Looking up the glacier above Inner Lake George
Really enjoyed the textures of the ice
Hopefully more to come in the next week.
