Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I like the lock in hubs, the first laugh of the morning! Great mud action Matt, good to see you working the plane HARD.

The other day I was doing some crane work for a local contractor down in Inkom, while they were bracing the wall I had just lifted up, I asked Greg who farmed that interesting little hillside hayfield in the background. To my surprise he responded in five words "I do, go for it". I wasn't surprised that he gave me the go ahead, but that he was farming it. Notice I didn't ask who owned it, I didn't care, the guy farming it is who I want to keep happy. Also notice he didn't ask why I wanted to know! ImageImage
After taking yet another aerial pic of the construction site, I flew down the ridgeline where I performed a gratis wind turbine inspection for a past customer.Image Then around the corner to eyeball a radio tower upcoming crane job site, a touch and go at Lava, and another wind turbine inspection and Howdy at ex Corsair pilot Jim's place, just an overfly at 500', as I would never buzz an old boy who flew for 60 years as a Marine aviator and then crop dusted and lives on 450 acres well away from anything, no never  and besides he wouldn't like that anyway :^o Then 4 or 5 hillside landings on the ridge line on the way home. I love my neighborhood! Never got more then 10 miles away!

Flew around central eastern Utah today looking for fall colors in the desert. Stopped at Mexican Mountain for lunch. It was a beautiful day!

I did some low level canyon flying east of Bend, Oregon a few days ago. It was beautiful!

I found a good road for an "off airport" landing. It was perfect. It even had a cul-de-sac to turn around in:

Re: Where did you fly today?

Yesterday, coming back from a 60 mile trip out to do some aerial pics for an electrical contractor of a dam site I'll be doing some crane work for. So, this was work related, I wasn't just screwing around.....an island on the Snake River. I was most concerned with the softness of the sand, and carefully dragged the site first to get a feel for. Again, only after landing did I see how big the rocks were and how many I had run over (kept the tail up though) and again (since getting the new gear and the 29's) IT FELT SMOOTH!Image

My first attempt at a video upload.
My flying neighborhood is not as green or as tall, but it is still alot of fun.

Nice video. Doesn't have to be hilly and green all the time, just when you go to the Johnson Creek fly in next year. :-)

Re: Where did you fly today?

Thanks

The Johnson Creek webcam is one of my IE favorites. Hopefully next summer.

I had to go around. Local resident (a pilot) and his dog were in the middle of the runway when I cleared the power lines. He exited stage right on his bicycle but the dog was busy.He was taking pictures of branches embedded in the asphalt. Going to try and get the county to repair.

Always keep an eye out for the wildlife.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I got an emergency call from the rancher I put in a big solar water pumping system for a while back: 1400 head of cattle in the feed lot and the pump wouldn't work. Turns out it worked, but they had to use the generator. I suspected a bad float switch, telling the pump the 17,000 gallon tank was full when it wasn't, unable to explain how to trouble shoot this to the rancher I just told him I'd run out in the AM.Image

A 45 minute flight instead of over 2 hours driving, I landed right in the feedlot and within 3 minutes had solved the problem, the float was indeed bad and all I did was disconnect it to get the pump running again off the solar system. I had a busy day so immediately took off again, telling myself I had no time to screw around on the way home. A few minutes later I told myself I was ahead of schedule due to the quick repair so what the hell.....Image Then I flew back across the desert, past my place, to Lava where another past customer had a problem with a circulator pump on his solar hot water system. He met me at the airstrip and 20 minutes later his problem was solved and I was back in the air. I walked back in the house 2 minutes before noon and after lunch got on with my regular work day, without the plane the day would have been shot!

Sometimes a pittance, other times a freebie, but it pays off later in good customer relations. The customers in great flying country of course get preference. This place I'd PAY to screw around out there, don't tell the rancher that

Re: Where did you fly today?

I have a Contour GPS Camera attached to the wing strut. I have it mounted close enough to the cabin, to be able to reach the record swich through the window. I power it on during preflight to allow the GPS to find itself, and then start the record before takeoff.

I don't know where the prop went in this video,it's in all of my others. Time of day and direction of flight, I guess.

I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio to manipulate the video and audio.
