I don't know where the prop went in this video,it's in all of my others. Time of day and direction of flight, I guess.

I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio to manipulate the video and audio.

Might be time of day.
Now I want to know about the missing prop. Almost every camera I have used shows the prop. Some are much better than others. My phone (Samsung Focus) is really bad. It looks like the prop is broken into pieces and thrown around. I say almost because my Samsung video camera never shows the prop at speed. With the Samsung you see exactly what your eye sees.
You can test any camera with a bicycle wheel. Just film the spokes spinning and you see the same artifacts as with the prop.

There is some dude over in Nevada that has some great videos and no prop. I can't recall his name but I wish I knew which camera he is using.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Prop artifacts in the video are a result of the way the image processor in the camera works. Most of them use what is called a "rolling shutter" which scans the image on the sensor while changes are occurring so the prop shows up in different positions as the scan progresses. That's why it appears curved. A newer generation of image processors scan the image on the sensor faster and lock the image during the scan. There's also some image processing going on in the camera to more closely approximate the way the human eye sees.

I have seen Contour videos with many prop artifacts but I think this is the first one I have seen with none. I almost bought a Contour until I saw they have more artifacts than my Cannon camera.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Here's a little test.

It does have something to do with the Time of Day(angle of Sun I should have said).
In this video from 11/12/2011, the prop artfacts are clearly visible at the start of my flight. By the time I get to Dryden, 35 minutes, they are almost gone. I visited with the airport manager a few minutes and headed home. by the time I got to Iraan, the whole damn front of the old 170 was gone.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Here's a video of a couple of landings that I did yesterday at Strawberry Ridge near Little Switzerland, North Carolina. The field is 1,000 feet long with a 16% uphill slope at an elevation of 3,478 MSL. The large mountain ridge in the background during takeoff is Mount Mitchell. This private strip is used for training by JAARS with their Helio Couriers. We talked to one of the Helios on the way there and he asked what kind of airplane we were flying when we mentioned Strawberry Ridge. I think he was worried that we couldn't handle the airstrip. He seemed satisfied when we said "Maule". This video was done with a Drift HD170 Stealth camera (thank you, Zane, for alerting me to the good deal). I haven't decided whether to add narration or music to this one yet, so it's the silent version without the irritating engine noise. It looks best at 720p in full screen.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Saturday Flight along the Rio Grande in West Texas.

The sky was a little hazy, so I flew South down river to try and have a more clear video. As usual, I let my brain get in the way, the camera was on the wrong side. :? The right side of the Rio Grande is Mexico, so I really didn't want an inflight visit. [-X

The fishing camp at the end of the video belongs to a rancher friend. We run up and down the Rio Grande in jetboats chasing 40lb Yellowcats. :D

Absolutely superb music selection mister! Steven Stills. Oh, man I forgot about that one. Great vid too. As for me, I was desert born and in the desert I'll die. Never get enough. Great stuff.

I fly low, I'm in high demand
I go 15 feet over the, Rio Grande
Blow the Mesquite, right off of the sand
Seldom seen specially, when I land
Treetop flyer, lone survivor
I work alone

Now there's things I am, and theres things I'm not
I am a smuggler, and I could get shot
But I ain't gonna die and ain't gonna get caught
Cause I'm a flying fool, especially
When I get hot
I'm a treetop flyer, a lone survivor
And I work alone

Nice pics Gary, looks like a fun spot. No pics today but I did make it up for about an hour before sunset and made landings at 4 airports.

Great video. I've flown that same stretch of the river several times. Covered it all in a boat too.

I hope this isn't threadjacking [-X ......but I heard Flying, Rio Grande, Jet Boats, & Yellow Cats!!! Couldn't resist. Any good river rat knows what it's like when you've got the fever.

I've been running boats in that river for nearly 15 years now. I saw Harrison's camp. And was that
Dean's camp up on top? I've fished with them a lot, but never been up to the camp. We always stay at Harrison's.

This is at Bullis Gap...Probably somewhere close to where the video starts...really rough country up there.

If you want to really see it, you have to go there. I bet wtxdragger would agree, the video is cool but doesn't come close to doing justice to the view. I'm a little white knuckled flying down the river though myself. If the whole border thing isn't enough, emergency landing options are somewhat gloomy to say the least.

I enjoyed your video Andy! In 2007 I worked on the Pinnacle fire in Lindville Gorge. After the fire another fellow and I drove the Blue Ridge parkway back to Ashville to fly home. He was in a club that climbs the highest mountain in every state so we had to stop and climb Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North Carolina and the highest east of the Missippippi.

During the fire I flew up Lindville Gorge in a helicopter with the doors off. I kept thinking about the "Last of the Mohicins" movie where they threw those girls off the cliffs.

Re: Where did you fly today?

It is truly BackCountry. Some of the roughest, prettiest country you will ever see, if you like the desert stuff. There are not many options to land, a few private strips scattered around, and every other flat spot is covered with some sort of thorn.
Most of the roads you see in the videos are 5 mph max in a 4x4 vehicle, the only reason a person is on them is to get to the river. Takes 3 hours from the highway, 32 miles to get to where the 182 is under the shed and then another 2 hrs, about 10 miles to get to the river. But the fishing is really good. :D :D

The video started about 30 miles West of Bullis Gap. I have landed where the 182 is parked in my old '58 182. I have not attempted yet in my new '48 170. :)

That is Dean,s camp, Deak was with me during the flight.

The previous video I posted has a landing at 6R6, Terrell County. They have fuel and an Airport Manager, CD Curry, who is there everyday but Wednesday. Total flight time was about 1.5 hrs in a loop from Terrell County. This is the time of year to see it,during the summer, days are in the 100+ degrees and the air is full of potholes.

Great video and music. I watched it three times. I have only flown the river one time. I picked up an airplane in Loredo and back to Calif. It turned out that the mag compass was about 20 degrees off. Good thing I knew what Guadalupe Peak looked like or I would have ended up in Denver.

wtxdragger: What is the name of the airstrip that is approx. 29° 48' / 101° 47' ? Is that about where you turned away from the river?
