Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Unfortunately I couldn't break free early enough to join Rob and Buzzlatka to witness the carnage wrought on Rob's thumb  so I instead headed east into the foothills as Scott did, only much later this afternoon right before dark.

I didn't have a particular mission in mind, just kept it low over the farms and ranches for a while, and ended up at Emmett's home drome (KJAQ) to tank up on the 4.99 100 LL the AWOS was advertising. After playing around in the creek hollows a while longer, I headed over to Rancho Murieta to turn a few circuits. That place is filthy with deer right now, jumped 3 across the runway and another pair of does were thinking about bolting across as I took off, and decided that there are many other places to play at last light that would involve splattering a stupid deer.

Loitered around practicing slow flight and power off stalls until it was "legal dark" time, for some night circuits at Mather. The left runway there is so long, that it would be next to impossible to lose an engine and not make it back on the runway, either straight ahead or turning around. It's a great choice for night flying chickens like myself to keep current. Ran 7 or 8 circuits in the dark and headed home.

Rob, that prop is a game changer......I didn't get off any quicker from Delta International than that in the 180 this summer. It was a little warmer and the grass was longer then than it looks in the pictures, but still - That's quite impressive coming out of an O-300 to clear the trees by that much at the end. Looks like you guys did some good work on the willows on the west side of the strip too. Maybe next time I won't go sticking my wingtip in them. #-o

Flew out over the Snake River Plain to KJER for my checkride. Not much to see, except for the area close to home. Lava is kind of boring to look at, except when pondering what I'd do if my engine were to fail...

That goes for hand saws too. Being too eager to try out my new "Razor Saw" resulted in $350 in medical bills last summer.

You got that right! :D

Oh.... On I-80 from the the 76 split all the way to Lincoln, I don't believe you climb one single hill. Maybe a couple 50-100 footers east of York :D That's almost 300 miles of no hills.

I know I know, being in the AF they beat it into your head to always use PPE on or off duty when required. I guess I should have been more careful. I wasn't actually going to do any chainsaw work, I was just helping Steve pull off the safety cover that wasn't coming off easily. The chain saw teeth ripped right through the "safety" cover and into my hand though. I think the saw would have been better off with out the cover. Oh well guess I learned a lesson on that one....

Another great flight in the western desert. Short hop into Mineral Canyon and then on to White sand dunes.

I don't live at Scottsbluff, even though that's where I was born and raised. If the camera was pointed 180 deg you would see bluffs (buttes) that are around 500 ft high.Actually there are fairly high buttes around. Between BFF & SNY there valleys that are separated by high buttes. Also remember this is called the High Plains area..BFF is 4K and SNY is 4.3K. I agree that traveling I-80 across the state of Nebraska it is pretty damn flat..that's partly the reason the original transcontinental railroad was built throgh the state....it rises steadily accross the state at about 1 ft of rise for every 500 ft horizontal. One good thing about the high plains..there are a lot of good places to put a plane down in an emergency. The bad thing about the plains..the wind goes screaming accross from Wyoming to Kansas.
As the pioneers said in their treck accross this land on their way to California and Oregon 170 years ago..you can see into next week you can see so far. This afternoon I flew with a couple of buddies from FTG part way on their way home..I could see pikes Peak from SNY..that's a good 5 hours away driving. I could also see Laramie Peak..that's two hours flying time away!
