Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Last weekend the Utah Backcountry Pilots Association had a fly-in and BBQ at Ibex, a dry lake bed in the west Utah desert. We saw a few BCP people there, and a few from the Caveman fly-in a few weeks ago too. I made a little video about it, although we got to Ibex just as they started serving lunch, and I got sidetracked by the food an didn't shoot any video and only took one picture at the event. Lame, I know. But I shot video flying there and back, and of the stop we made on the way out at Crater Hot Springs. Anyway, here it is:

To Kimsquit - recon for Gump

Flew out to (near) the coast to check on Gump's "Tiltin' Hilton".
First pass to find some rocks small enough to tail in on, I saw a huge griz munching on the sedge, second pass he'd moved up to the tree line & stood on a rock watching me. Was too bizzy to get a pic of him, but he was the biggest griz I've seen for several years. Nice colors too!

Got the plane secured (lucky the tide was coming IN) & hiked down the beach to the cabin...
Image

It's just off the high tide line...
Image

Looked much better from the backside...
Image

The boat will need a lil' work tho...
Image

Here is the conex box locking device, still secure...
Image

Stovepipe from kitchen stove rusted out, this is the only BadThing. You need to come up this summer & fix this, & bring a cleaning (??) lady...
Image

AND it's about time to replace the calendar! No wonder the landscaping has gone to hell...
Image

Looks liveable, with a little cleaning up, & replacing that kitchen stovepipe. Didn't see any water damage, no broken windows, but there's a dead pine marten in the bedroom. No smell, he's all dehydrated so left him there for you to discover. :) The glass door that says "Keep shut" was open, I propped it closed. There was some flavor of Cessna on final to the Dean river strip as I was escaping. Two seals balanced on a big floating log was comical.

Beautiful spot, Gump. You should come up sometime! :)
Oh, and here's my trip route... http://www.fly.to/logan

If we can get a break with schedules we'd sure like to wander that way. And to the Atlin Fly-In too.

Well everything is about priorities. :)
Life's too short to stay in Nevada all the time.
C'mon up, stay/fish @ Nimpo, spend some time @ your place, we'll fly to Atlin together!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Today I took piperpainter flying with me while my wife flew her long cross country for her PPL. We landed at several strips and gravel bars. We even met my wife at Willows and had lunch with her while she was on her cross country. It was a fun day of flying.

A new spot for the west circuit
Image

Image

This one we named dogleg due to the shape of the strip, much of it is unusable due to a ditch and a bush in the middle of the strip

Indian Valley

We briefly flew along with Stacey after lunch in Willows, after this she flew to Redding, Lincoln, then back to Rio Vista

Allen Field

One of the gravel bars we landed on

Vaugn's Strip, a short walk to a good restaurant we found out, we will be back

Stacey made it back from her long cross country!

You need to come over this way when you get your plane back Kevin! We'll have to set up a west circuit fly-in!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew down the Columbia to Astoria with the wife and met a friend for lunch in town. On the way down the river was packed with everyone chasing the Spring Chinook.

On the way back did a few low passes over a couple dredge spoil site that would make a good landing spot for some summer steelhead fishing in the next month.

[googlemap]http://maps.google.com/maps?q=white's+island+cathlamet&hl=en&ll=46.148265,-123.312263&spn=0.019088,0.048752&hnear=Whites+Island&t=h&z=15[/googlemap]

After a few low passes it looked to be about 1500' and about 100 yards from some prime bank fishing.

About a month ago it was mostly green around here, it's been quickly turning brown with the lack of rain and temps in the 80's.

Very cool, I take lots of photos of windmills but the truck frames are a unique idea.
Thanks,
