Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Sounds like you're learning the C206 exactly as you should. Have fun!

Not exactly "backcountry," but a perfect day in the skies over Monterey.

Only been in the house for a few weeks and wondered what the dog was all nuts about, I walk outside and see this on my roof. Apparently a whole flock (or gaggle or whatever a bunch of turkeys are called) are residents of the neighborhood. Blasting them off of my roof might be frowned upon by the neighbors.

Thx...it was quite the day. First flight up here getting checked out so that I have a plane to fly. They also have a Husky and a 170 that I have my eye on to get checked out in.

I took a short/cold flight from Logan to Malad in the PA22 today. After verifying the strip was still there, I dinked around near Brigham City before heading back to Logan.

Educational bit - a group would be called a rafter of turkeys.

Glad I don't have the turkey problem, even more glad I don't have the close neighbor problem!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I flew to the San Juan Islands yesterday, and down through the southern part of Puget Sound today. The sky was incredibly clear, the mountains were beautiful, and the sunsets were sublime, but all landings were on pavement. I feel odd posting flying shots that end as far from the backcountry as possible on this website. I still long for getting to know the backcountry strips in this area. I feel like a flight that ends on something other than pavement would give me permission to post the beautiful in-flight shots and video taken in this incredible corner of the country. In the meantime, I keep flying so I won't be too rusty when the opportunity arises to fly to some nearby grass strips.

Post your pictures anyways! That's a great part of the country. I'm sure others would like to see the pics also.

Re: Where did you fly today?

OK Rob: Here's shots of my flight to Roche Harbor yesterday. It was so clear, you could see Mount Rainier 120 miles away!

Having said that, this picture is Mount Baker taken the near Deception Pass.
Image

This is the approach into Roche Harbor. It wasn't backcountry, but there were geese all around the runway. I'm just glad they stayed clear of the runway itself and didn't fly when I came in. Hitting a goose would be bad juju!
Image

The sunset on the flight back to Port Townsend bowled me over. Those are the Olympic Mountains the sun is disappearing behind.
Image

and here I'm turning downwind to base at Port Townsend as the sun slowly dies.

Moving here may be the best thing I've ever done!

Chiriaco Summit...great stop. A pretty decent greasy spoon there and the Patton Museum is pretty cool if you are into that sort of thing. The flight over Joshua Tree is spectacular. I do love the desert out there.

Re: Where did you fly today?

We flew out to Half Moon Bay for lunch, then to Petaluma for the cheapest fuel in CA ($4.10 a gallon). Justin's wife took some good air to air pictures of us.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Beautiful pictures Rob! When you fly that route over the bridge and down the coast do you stay VFR under the class bravo with flight following or file? I've always wanted to take that tour towards Monterey on one of my trips down but typically stay inland.

Agree. Haven't flown there but stopped by on my motorcycle in October on my way to Joshua. Neat restaurant and the Patton Museum is great. Nice airstrip adjacent to both.

Just stay VFR under the Bravo, it's pretty easy with or without flight following.

Thanks for the info. Double checking the chart looks like staying under '1500 will do the trick.

Your 170 is looking sweet!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Yes, there's one sliver of airspace just north of Half Moon Bay where you need to be below 1500. Or you can stay out slightly further and stay under 2100.
