Where would you live if you had the choice ?

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

I have grandkids. I need to stay fairly close to the Bay Area for now. I would like to go someplace warmer if I could. Like Texas. If my home state wasn't so weird I'd move to Kernville and get a minimum wage job at the airport. :D I suppose we'll have to make do with N. Nevada. Winters are a bit long I think because of altitude, but we get sunshine nearly every day. Minden would be nicer. It's greener there. Nevada has the worst drivers in the world though. I've heard it started to deteriorate right after they got indoor plumbing.

Hi Joe, I live in the State of Alaska. If I was not here I would like to live in the State of Idaho.
I grew up in the State of Illinois and Wisconsin. I spent a good amount of time in Minnesota up around Ely.
I lived two years in Washington before coming to Alaska in 1974.

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

If you are interested there is an airpark located near Marsing, Idaho. I think the name is Sunrise Skypark Airport, it is right on the bank of the Snake River. It is located about 20 miles south west of Boise, ID. I think they still have some building lots available. You would be less than an hour from the Idaho backcountry. If you get out here next summer look me up and I might be able to show you around a little bit.

Stanley, Idaho in the summer. Cave Creek, Arizona in the winter. If only could afford Carefree Skyranch. For the meantime I guess Twin Falls will have to do. And to whoever was gloating about Texas.....well..... I've spent the last ten years in Austin, and, quite frankly, I have never been more stoked to leave. (that being mentioned Austin is one hell of a cool city, and I have been everywhere in this country, minus Maine and Hawaii) That being said I do have a girl and a business pulling on my heart so time to go. "I'm not from Texas, but I'm leaving as fast as I can!" Joke.

Who mentioned a 6k hangar at TWF? That's it? I was looking into Jerome but that's in the future....

Speaking of Jerome I was there last Spring driving by the airport and Airpower Unlimited had just rolled out a just finished F4U Corsair. I will have to try and find the pics but that was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. The do some crazy work there. Saw them once at Smiley Creek with an Avenger. Unreal. I'm just waiting to see if they ever do anything with that Harpoon. Now that would be cool!

If you don't mind a little bit of snow through the winter. You can't beat the Boise area. If the airpark is your thing, then Sunrise Skypark would be a good spot to check. There is also Greenleaf Airpark "out west of Caldwell" :D worth looking into.

For me personally, even if I won any amount from the Super or Mega Lotto, I would still have a house in the Boise area. Just can't beat the people, small town feel and what the area has to offer to the outdoorsy type person. I like the four seasons here, but don't like too much snow. Boise has the perfect balance for me. If your running a business or need to travel for work, Boise International airport is super easy to fly out of to anywhere you need to go world wide.

Just wondering why you didn't care for the Austin Area. We have been looking at that area and would like to find a small airpark that we could buy 1-2 acre lot for a hangar/home. Nothing fancy nothing expensive, just ordinary people....that might be hard to come by.

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

Oh man...

This northern chunk of Nevada is hard to beat. Close to tons of stuff, yet just out far enough to keep the riff raff out. We get all four seasons with no real extremes, flying weather most every day, clean air, and no traffic on the roads. And lots and lots of empty to go play in.

Image

Now if I was headin' back North.... I'd be up on the Kobuk River hunkered down in Kiana, flying for Lee's Sea Air. Or in Kotz or Unalakleet playing in a Sled. All worthy spots.

Idaho, or idaho, or oh yeah, IDAHO! yeah, i know. but i've lived at high elevation 5000' + for so long, it's affected my brain!...i seem to travel enough these days to know the difference, so i'll always be on one side of this state, or the other...

For now anywhere in the greater PNW that isn't too wet or very populated is A-OK.....
When I retire and am able, travel in the less populated greater desert SW in the winter some+.......

Really, I do like people......individually+. In other words NOT by the hundreds of thousands!

Well unfortunately the Austin area is growing faster than one can imagine! It has become quite pricey and expensive just to live here. I have pictures of ten years ago and now and the skyline is nothing alike. I'm pretty sure most of SoCal migrated here. Lot's of hipsters. I have two roommates because our rent is $2150, granted we live off South Congress down the street from the Continental Club. Travis Heights area. Not cheap. Across the board I would say Austin prices have tripled in the last ten years. Just a fair warning. It's still charming, but, it's become unreal. I still love the place and will come back and visit but jesus h it's getting insane.

As far as airparks I know.....well, good luck. I would check Airnav to see what's around. Everybody I know that flys here keeps their plane in San Marcos or New Braunfels. The new Austin Executive Airport may be an option, but it is out by the dump. Literally, the dump (landfill) Except farther north. And it's aways out of town. It's cheaper up there but if you are going to be commuting from Round Rock to downtown. Good Luck. Hope you don't like sleep!

The best places I know of are out by Lake Travis (currently "Small Stream Travis") and beyond to Lake Buchanan. Lakeview and Horseshoe Bay are nice but you better have a lot of greenbacks!

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

If I would just stay home, I live there. Great fishing, hunting, sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, almost as much water as land for float flying-ski flying in the winter, great weather if you are an outdoor person and like winter activites, few, but friendly people and election campaigning only lasts weeks, not years, no huge government deficits. Downside: government health care system, high taxes, must have a tolerance for hockey. All in all, little downside that cannot be overcome. Much better than this windy, humid prairie weather that I am currently in, people here hole up in November and don't come out until April, winter flying is less than ideal and you can't fish in a corn field.

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

1.Central Calif except for taxes . Anytime
2.Mountains of Northern New Mexico -need aircraft for medical access Spring thru Fall
3.Idaho-on airport mostly spring -thru winter
4.Central-northern Arizona almost anytime
5.West Texas almost anytime
6.Central Kansas -anytime except dark winter

I have Property in 2, 4, 6(and Boulder City,NV.) so I could use that to Start. My better half want to be near Casinos to spend money -I'm not impressed with Casino's or there scams . I really like Idaho in spring-summer not too sure about winter. I'm a warm weather kind of guy -being born in southern Calif. I guess I'll never get used to cold -snow shovel weather. Costa Rica is really a nice place to go except for the limited amount of resources to other family . If I won the super Lottery I'd like to have a Personal Jet and live in Costa Rica-and commute to Central Calif. :)

Bill, do you have a good explanation for #1, #5, and #6? :-k

I'll admit. I like driving through Kansas (and I've cut through that state on about every road). Lot's of neat farms and towns in that state. Not sure if I could stay there too long though.

"West Texas". Do you mean central Texas between Fortockton and San Antonio? That's some pretty country down there.

Backcountry, camping, fishing, hunting, a thriving grassroots aviation culture...consider Maine or New Hampshire.
