Where would you live if you had the choice ?

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

Rocket, ok ok, but where would you live if you had a choice?

We ALL have a choice. That's the beauty of living in the greatest country on earth.

And to paraphrase Rocket just do it. We all have an expiration date, could be tomorrow. Just do it.

And Rocket, we get a break in the weather and we are coming up to see you guys one more time before the snow. Hang in there brother.

Dog is my Copilot wrote:My vote is for the Pacific Northwest. The Northwest offers a great variety of choices (Coastal airports, Cascades, San Juan Islands, and great airports in the I-5 corridor). There are great gravel bars along multiple rivers and Idaho/Montana are within a single tank of gas for most planes. There are tons of privately owned strips both marked and unmarked throughout Oregon and Washington - most with friendly owners. I think the weather is mild. I am not a big fan of cold weather and although we get some wet weather in the winter - there is year round flying and no need for pre-heating - at least not here in Portland.

I agree the area is beautiful and the weather decent. However, I have to factor in politics into our decision and because of that, no way could we live in the Seattle or Portland areas. We do like Eastern Oregon, but the politicians of Portland overrule the people in the rest of the state.

Does the rest of those states even know that Seattle and Portland exist? Asking for a friend... :^o

NZ!! Beautiful Mountains, lakes, rivers, beaches. Temperate climate and Covid free. Jump in your plane and come on down.

Everyone I have talked to that has been to NZ has said how beautiful it is, similar to California, but far fewer people. Unfortunately, NZ has no 2A in its constitution. I think NZ also has ADBS. So, maybe will visit one day, but won't be moving.

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

I'm apparently, stuck living in the hellhole of SE Idaho. Damn mountains are always in the way, and some of the best flying sites in the lower 48, besides the one's 5 and 10 minutes away, are a bit over an hour's flight away (at my cruise speed of 85 mph). Just a couple days ago, I only had time for a 2 hour bike ride, up a big mountain canyon, after flying into a off airport site with the E Montague. Once back home, it took me another 20 minutes to make the drive to my crane yard and another 10 to get to that day's jobsite, by 12:30 PM. I'd like to live someplace more convenient, as I only to get to make flights like this a few times a week.Image

Unfortunately there are a lot of states with this same problem. The 'Big cities' rule the land perse. I've lived all over the world and when I left northern MN went into the military, I told myself I wouldn't go back to that frozen place. Well, guess where I ended up after being gone for 40 years? Yep, right back in the woods on Northern MN. Still a lot of right thinking people around but the area is getting over run by the big city vacationers with lake homes. Unfortunately these people are changing the locals way of life. Can you believe one of these people even called the Sherrifs office to complain about people shooting guns during deer season!! Yes, true story. The sherrif basically told the person that is what happens up here in woods country and to suck it up. LOL

I have been looking for someplace to move to as my years creep up on me where I don't have to deal with the cold and snow, but as long as I can still handle it, I'll stay here. I've got 120 acres, surrounded by Paul Bunyan state forrest, my own hangar and strip....so I'm perfectly content for now. Wolves, bear, deer, small game....heck when the next civil war comes I'll be fine. ;)

Looks like we're creeping into politics. Moderation readiness level elevated.

Interesting how many are looking to get away from people. I agree, but it isn’t a sentiment I’m proud of. :D

In my saner moments, I realize that I’d rather live close to family and visit mountains or beaches than live close to mountains or beaches and visit family.

Oregon sucks. You don't want to live here! Politics is a huge factor. I won't say anymore about that.

California is a better place for anyone thinking about moving to Oregon. Heck, anywhere is better than Oregon!! It is always raining. Clouds so low you can hardly ever fly.

Cheers...Rob

Dillingham, Alaska........After getting to spend nearly 10,000hrs flying/marauding around the area for work and play. Even after all those years I still see new stuff and feel that I’ve only experienced a fraction of what that region has to offer. It’s not a perfect town.....very far from it. But I grew up there and would do my childhood all over again in a heartbeat if that was possible. I’m fortunate to visit often.

Second choice........Little Italy in San Diego!LOL

I love where I live but the wind here plays a guy out in the spring and fall. Winter is nice flying weather here but the older one gets the less one likes the cold. In the fall and winter if your equipped with skis the whole prairie becomes a airport.

I’m starting to accept that every place has its ups and downs and changing scenery really doesn’t mean much. Working on choosing to be happy right where I’m at, haha.

And that's why I live in Texas, instead of somewhere near the mountains... Don't get me wrong, I like it here just fine, but I miss the mountains, the wind in the pine trees, creeks and rivers that aren't dry one minute and 150 feet wide the next, etc...

So far, we've lived in El Paso, Houston, and now just NW of Dallas. First we "baked", then we "stewed", and now we alternate between roasting and freezing (sometimes on back-to-back days). But with kids and now grandkids in Texas, I think we're here for the duration...

But I do keep dreaming of living on a certain airpark in East Tennessee... Gorgeous terrain and weather, reasonable taxes and economy, and even more reasonable housing / hangar costs...

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

I live and fly in the Pacific Northwest. I like having ready access to airports adjacent to salt water, in the mountains and on the desert. Not many places offer all 3 within an hours flying time. The politics haven't stopped me from going anyplace I've wanted to visit. In fact, the State of Washington maintains a number of magnificent grass runways up in the Cascade Mountains for my pleasure. We have fresh air, clean water, abundant pilot playgrounds, my business is doing well and my plane is just 4 minutes from my house at an airport with a mechanic and fuel on the field. You can always find something to dislike if that's what you're looking for. I wake up each morning with a smile, and part of that grin is because of all the natural beauty around where I live. Here was yesterday's destination:

Re: Where would you live if you had the choice ?

I feel like I have to speak up for us East Coasters. I'm not sure if I chose where I live or if it chose me. I am a multi generational Adirondacker living in the house my dad grew up in. We did a couple year stint in the Pacific Northwest in the mid 80's - which is awe inspiring by the way. However we chose to come back "home" and start a outfitting/whitewater business. If you like outdoor stuff there isn't anyplace better East of the Mississippi in my opinion. I DO like Idaho, Montana & Washington and plan to spend large chunks of time there at some point, but we have it pretty good here.

Good Mt Flying.
Image

Backcountry strips in the winter at least.
Image

I can walk out my back door and get on a buck track and not see another hunter all day.
Image

Pretty good Brook Trout fishing.
Image

Ski area with 2,500 vertical and 100+ trails five minutes from the house.
Image

Plus great hiking, paddling and general outdoor fun.
