If we find some, does that mean you'll talk your wife into letting you come?

cozmicharlie wrote:For those of you that might be concerned about flying in and out of the lake bed, I thought I would share my experience as a low time pilot that has never landed off airport. I flew to 3 shot gun shells lake bed last Tuesday in a stock 172 (160 hp). I took the advice of the write-up on BCP (and a number of people that posted advice on this thread) about landing off airport and first practised landings at Carson City (elevation 4700 ft) before heading out to the lake bed. I did some low passes going in all 4 directions and flew around the area of the lake bed. It was in the AM so the DA was not an issue, some wind but not much. I shot a couple low passes over the lake bed and had no problem climbing out in the 172 (full gas but not loaded with gear). I found plenty of lower spots between the hills that I could fly through if needed. If you take off to the east it is pretty flat and you can just follow the road into the valley. The lake bed certainly looks smaller from the air than on the ground but there are no trees so the approach does not have to be too steep. I am confident in the 172 that I could land and climb out. I decided not to land

Good start, as you need to learn to read the surface from the air. But... Don't think that making passes at flying speed is going to tell you anything about how your airplane is going to accelerate on that surface, and how you'll climb once airborne.

A little row of hills 300-400 feet high don't look like much, until you find that your airplane's rate of climb is less than the hill's rate of climb. Then, those hills may as well be 3000-4000 feet above you.

Go get your feet dirty, and start big and work your way smaller.

Well I'm bummed. Work called, no High Sierra fly-in for me. :x
I have yet to find a way to afford the plane without the job so off to work I go.

Its exciting to see some youthful aviation enthusiasm. Looks like you guys are putting together a real topnotch event.

Keep up the good work Kevin, I hope to make the next one.

Man I wish I could come Kevin. Itd be quite a slug from up here to there in the Citabria. Working on convincing the wife we need a bigger plane that would make trips like this a lot of fun and more doable. Have fun guys!

Still working on it. Dee said she would come with kids in tow until i told her what the forecasted lows were going to be (thinking of the little ones). Still might talk her into it. Otherwise, hopefully with plan B, C, or D!

Today Dee said that she couldn't tell me I couldn't go because of how fun it sounds and knowing how much I want to go. So, I'll be there either with a friend or the whole family! Looking forward to it!

I've tried in vain to find the photo thread from past HSFs. Can someone post the link? I'd like to see some of the different places in the area.

Thanks!

I'll be there on my little 6.00s...yep I'm suffering from little tire syndrome.

I tried my darndest to talk my buddy into skipping his Friday class but wasn't successful. I will be picking him up at the Pocatello airport at 9:15am Friday morning. I'm stoked for this!
