Today's mission, no more black goo.

Matt, What did you use on the 'black goo'? We have a similar project on deck here, a '54 180 that seems to have the same stuff in the way...

I tried many different products. In the end, brushing on a layer of Tuff Strip and scraping that off (doesn't run into the seams and is effective) and cleaning the remainder up with MEK worked well. Lots of elbow grease.

Cheers pal!

Thanks Jim. I appreciate the offer and I'll get in touch with you.

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

A good update. Parts in and paint done.

Test fit of the AirGlas carbon fiber extended baggage. Well worth the few extra bucks in my opinion. I'm very happy with the results; lighter and stronger than fiberglass by a noticeable amount, and dealing with Todd at Hitchcock Aviation was awesome. Thanks again Todd for the great deal!

4 yards of Aerofloor DOT / Slate. Another great product.

One gently used Graco Croix CX-8 HVLP sprayer picked up cheap off Criagslist. I highly recommend a Graco HVLP!

Prep and lining up a warm date to spray the Imron paint was a game of patience (hard to find a 65°F day during the CO winter, but finally it happened). I really love the way it turned out, many thanks to Bigrenna for all the help on this part of the project.

Time to start putting things back in. More updates soon. :)

Matt, WOW! Great work, that's looking gorgeous. Hope you're giving Woody updates from time to time. Good move on the Graco setup, I ASS-U-ME it's got fresh air for the nasty Imron fumes [Remember kids: A headache is NOT a high...]. Keep us all updated, just remember, it will fly when IT's ready, not necessarily when YOU are.

Thanks. cubscout

Your efforts are certainly paying off. That Imron spray job looks terrific and will really last. Well done.

Yep, I read up on all the nasty stuff that Imron has in it and decided to buy a used HobbyAir HB01 fresh air respirator system. It was a bit of a pain to use as we had hoses and wires running everywhere, but safety first right?!? The Graco CX-8 has a compressor and the 2 qt pressure pot came in handy for spraying all the nooks and crannies / upside down.

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Feels good to start moving onto other things, this week was the floor.

The Aerofloor DOT (color Slate) is very nice and I'm glad I chose to go with it (comes 51" wide and in yards, 4 yards is enough to do the entire floor). It's light, durable, rugged and looks very clean. For a template I used a thick paper that I found at Lowes. It worked much better than the cardboard I started to use. It's very easy to mark edges and make cuts.

Image

From there I traced it onto the back of the Aerofloor and cut with a razor. Not much to it really.

Image

Image

Here it is installed! I left a little extra on the edges to make adjustments as needed and tuck behind the Selkirk foam.

Image

Image

I also began the process of running all the wires through the belly and out of the way of the control cables. My biggest concern for the utility interior is having people/kids pull on the exposed wires, and this will eliminate that. Time consuming, but well worth it imo.

Image

Marching forward....

Matt, that looks fantastic. Let me know if you need a hand. I'll fly down to your place for the day - well when ski season is finally over anyway. ;-)

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

wow looking great. if you don't mind me asking, how much is the aerofloor DOT per yard? does it just lay down over the floor or are there fasteners? looks like great stuff.
