Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Thanks all. My Wife has been a very patient person though this entire process, so a huge thank you to her.

For me, Mr Perkins and Mr Murrish were responsible for the initial inspiration many years ago, but Greg sure paved the road to making this crazy process a little easier by providing a support group and info. If anything, I owe him money as I'm sure he saved me countless hours and gray hairs by answering calls and emails.

Make sure you add 30lbs fuel and do not add any weight for the oil per the TCDS

Current weight and balance report together with list of equipment included in certificated empty weight and loading instructions when necessary must be provided for each aircraft at the time of original certification. The certificated empty weight and corresponding C.G. location must include unusable fuel of 30 lb. at (+46) on Models 180, 180E, 180F, 180G, 180H, 180J, and 180K through S/N 18053000, and 60 lbs. at (+48) on Models 180A, 180B, 180C and 180D, and undrainable oil of 0.0 lbs. at -15.0 through S/N 1805260; full oil of 22.0 lbs. at -15.0 S/N 18052621 and on.

I'm a dummy, I added full oil yesterday as I was due for a change and thought it was required. I'll see if my A&P/IA wants me to drain it or simply subtract it. I am also one of those odd years that require 10 gallons or 60 lbs added as unusable fuel to the final e/w (the real unusable for normal flight is less than 5 gallons though).

Looks great Matt. I like the route you took with the modest refurb. Awesome balance of form and function.

I think I will continue to live vicariously through the Cessna 170/180/185 restorations on this site. I would love to restore an airplane some day. For now, I'll just keep flying!

Great job!

Matt,
You said you still need to do 2nd row headset jacks. Let me know if you're looking for a design. I saw one I liked recently.
Your bird looks fantastic. Great job!

Good guess GB, I'm thinking you're close.

The reference info is buried in this thread, but the 1957 factory weight was 1626# legal e/w and the last calculated was 1666# legal e/w (but I don't think the interior or paint was included in this as it has not been on the scales for many many years).

Thanks DP! I have a thought of somehow using the rear panel/ashtray holes, but I am open for a good design. Please let me know.

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Matt,

Airplane looks great!!! Bet you can't wait to fly that thing and enjoy the fruits of your labor!!!

Here's a pic of what I did for the rear mic and phone jacks. I decided for now to only put them on the left side, though I can easily pigtail off those jacks and put another set on the right side since I used separate ground wires. I figure for the handful of times I'll have another human back there, I can get away with one, or just get a splitter for the fourth person...I only have three headsets anyways

The alum piece that the jacks are attached to is a doubler for the rear sling seat fittings (not shown here). I know you don't have these, but you might be able to rivet a piece somewhere behind the seat to attach them to

I think this is a good location, out of the way and wires not exposed too much...fwiw

Matt, I always have weight and balance calculated with oil added. Who's flying these things without oil??

Have the mechanic note under conditions on the W/B that the plane was weighed with xx quarts of oil. Never heard of anyone having heartburn over that.

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Great work Matt!

Betting your ready to have her back in the air!

We can't give MTV a hard time about darkness, he was working by candle light back then... :D Now days we have these little lights that you can wear on your head...

Good to see your compartment does not have the 4-6 inch step up. The flat transition allows for a great sleeping option.

I'm giving you my guess on weight: 1645lbs will be it...let's see what you get.

Nice work! I hope see it at our High Sierra Fly-in this year.

Yes, but at my age (and actually for the last forty years or so) I'd have to FIND that little light first.

I talked to my A&P and we are just going to weight it with the oil and subtract the weight. Nor he or I saw any reason to drain it at this point in time. Funny though, I need 10 gallons gas but no oil in the plane for the e/w, lol.

Thanks Bart and DP for the rear jack pictures. I like both ideas as they are out of the way for the times I never use them (80% of the time).

Kevin, very excited to get back in the air. Hope to put that flat baggage area to good use camping soon.

One more day, anyone else make a guess? So far we have 1640# and 1645#.

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

My guess might be way off but I hope you do get below 1600, so I'm saying 1589. You might not get there till you strip the paint on the outside though.

Beautiful work Matt! Really well done, looks like the perfect balance between form & function. The weight will be interesting to hear but I'm looking forward to hearing about your exploits when you turn loose in it.

I say 1643 and suggest Matt buys beers for the one with the closest guess to the actual wt. If there is a tie, he buys for both  =D>

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Beers (or margs) on me to the closest guess. :!:
Remember, this is for zero fuel, zero oil, 8.00s and all seats installed (what the scales read minus 22lbs (12qts)).

So far I like RobW's guess the best, lol.
