Re: The Big Cessna 180 / 185 Empty Weight Thread

The paperwork on my 1954 180 says 1573.8. We will be weighing it shortly after an extensive revamp and paint. My Super Space Ranger Estimating Guesstimator says I'm pretty likely to end up with a better excuse for not flying with the corpulent in-laws again...

Re: The Big Cessna 180 / 185 Empty Weight Thread

1973 180J.

Weighed last week on certified scales.

1924 with rear seats and Aerocet cargo pod installed, CG of 36.35. 3,190 gross.
1865 lbs without pod or middle row seats, CG of 35.28.

I think I need to shave some weight with a different propeller  Let's see what the missus says...

Mods/weight piggies are:

Cargo pod,
Firewall battery,
Fishing rod tube,
Factory extended baggage,
Factory float kit,
Ski points,
PPonk gear beef,
Heavy starter,
850-6’s (standard tailwheel),
3-blade McCauley,
185 tail,
autopilot,
IFR panel,
Horton STOL,
VG’s,
BAS handles,
Jump seats in middle row (non-folding Cessna types), no rear seats,
Shoulder harnesses front & middle,
LR tanks.

1980 180K, weighed 5 years ago at Beegles and no mods since then. Very close to a stock 180.

Weighs 1798 empty, or 1780 if I take out the rear seats. I have the 3190 GW mod so useful load is around 1400 lbs or ~860 after I fill the tanks. But it's a pig at that weight.

I've always wondered how a 230 hp 180 would perform at 3190 lbs. There's a very noticeable difference in what mine will do between 2400 and 2800 lbs. I can't imagine being pleased with the short field and climb performance nearly 400 lbs beyond 2800.

Re: The Big Cessna 180 / 185 Empty Weight Thread

Just goes to show you that "useful load" doesn't tell the whole story.
Seems like as years went by & the empty weight went up, Cessna increased the gross weight to maintain the same useful load.
Big difference between how a 2550# airplane and a 2800# or 3150# airplane flies, behind the same 230hp.

1733 lb Empty, to go WingX, Vg's, AB 29". I figure its a little heavy because its a float plane and it has Monarch mains/aux's.

The latest amendment on my '54 180 puts it at 1518. Stock airframe, standard tanks, original lighter gear, basic VFR, rear bush seats, 6:00 tires. Includes the deletion of the vacuum system, gyros, ADF. Still has the heavy battery in the tail. 0470A with 88" C203 McCauley seaplane prop. Accurate? Who knows.

It's probably not far off...and I'm jealous.
You've got the recipe down pat for a lightweight 180:
early model, stripped down some, A engine, minimal radios, no heavy mods.
The only thing that might be heavier than stock is the 88" prop, and that's only a couple pounds worth.
Matter of fact, if you replaced an old threaded-hub prop, the C203 is actually lighter- maybe a lot lighter.
FWIW mine has the firewall mounted Odyssey battery, according to the W&B records that knocked off 19 pounds.

Re: The Big Cessna 180 / 185 Empty Weight Thread

The firewall battery is on my list as well, but I'm waiting until I need to change the battery anyway since it was new when I bought the plane. I will be doing the Airglass flat floor extended baggage at the same time.

Once my Whelen LED strobes arrive, that will be enough for this year after doing the floats, interior and panel already this winter.

Scratch the question. I read your post. Haha. Man that's a sweet looking 180. Thanks for the DG by the way.

Right on. My single favorite combination mod for a 180. Firewall battery and flat floor. Even more important where it's cold.

Hope that DG serves you well.

Mine was weighed a couple years back as equipped at 1661 lbs on the standard Cessna wheel gear and 1984 on EDO 2960s. This is with Wing-X extensions, STOL cuff, and minimal VFR equipment.

Re: The Big Cessna 180 / 185 Empty Weight Thread

Just got my 185 a new W&B this morning. A lot of you know how highly modded it is so I won't go down the list, but I will add that it's IFR equipped, STEC autopilot, 26 Goodyears and XP Mod tail wheel. She weighs 1,901.42 empty which gives me a useful load of 1,623.58. I can carry some of the 180's here. [emoji51] With full fuel and oil I have 1,137.58 for people and baggage. Sic! Very pleased.
