Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Friend of mine has moved on to a new Leica M so this back-up cam is left in the hangar in case I want to use it. 8) Sure!! I grab the beast and lug it along when I have somebody else to do the flying.

I could have a 5D MkIII with L glass and some money left over for gas for the price of a Leica M.

Same day, but with the NEX-5 Sony instead of the 1D: (night and day difference quality glass makes!) (right res Leica!)

I guess with all that mud, it's a good thing we had bushwheels. God forbid the plane sits on concrete in the hangar. .

A short video from yesterday, flying over a partly frozen local reservoir, Deer Creek, and then down Provo Canyon. It's hard to see on the video, but towards the end there is lots of ice on the canyon walls to the left, and a bunch of guys were up there climbing it. Pretty cool!

Hey that is cool. I was maybe going to visit a friend in Utah this winter and climb on some of that ice my self, looks fat in the video and now even more tempting to head that way. Oregon sucks right now the freezing level today was 11,300', and the entire Willamette Valley is "1/4SM OVC002"

Hello amacbean,

What kind of setup are you filming with? Looks a lot better than my stupid "gothrow" camera.

Thank you for the great rides!

Re: Where did you fly today?

The ice at Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon is famous for climbing. I've never done it, but a friend of ours is big into it and I think I'm going to tag along this year and do some of the easy stuff to see what it's like.

I'm using a Drift Camera (like a go-pro, but more aerodynamic looking, comes with a remote control, rotating lens to straighten the image after you mount it). You can check them out here: http://driftinnovation.com/

I use a mount made by Marc Webster, he's here on bcp. It's solid, easy to use, and works on a variety of struts. See towards the end of this thread: http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/c ... lane-12264

Re: Where did you fly today?

Well today I was able to get out of work after a half day to do some volunteer work! I did an Angel flight from Madera, CA over to Palo Alto, CA. It was a quick but pretty nice flight. I was happy to help the family with the less than 1 year old child get to medical facilities for treatment. After I finally got to Palo alto I was pretty hungry so I shot up to Peteluma (O69) and met up with Dudesickle for a late lunch. That was good burger, especially since I was so hungry! Anyway, after that we shot over to a field and checked it out just to the southwest of Berryessa. (Got the first ever in flight shots of Justin's 182 on the way!) Keep in mind it's hard to fly and take pictures!

There are a lot of nice strips, but it was 75 and bumpy so we didn't do to much. Had him land at his first dirt runway in the 182 @ Hardin Ranch.

The cows thought it was dinner, but soon realized I don't like birds after I hit one...and I sure as hell don't want to hit a cow. Anyway, we went back to Vacaville to see a Cessna 747 land...oh that was his pattern I mean! It was weird though, I guess the guy had a brake issue and ended up in the grass as he was trying to exit the runway. After that I returned back to my dwelling, a good day was had. Time for a drink!

Do it, you live in the perfect venue for it. And if you enjoy getting hit in the face with ice in sub freezing temperatures while wailing away with sharp picks... nothing like actual rock climbing, more like aid climbing almost. Easy ice is awesome, the harder more technical stuff can be a nightmare. Have a blast! And if you get hooked lets fly in somewhere for some ice :D

Edit: Yeah I need more friends that climb and fly!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Hit a few of the strips in my backyard with Joey. Peoria and Red Hills. Owners of Red Hills want us to have a fly in there. I'll put something together.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Okay, as promised here are a few pics of Red Hills. I'm not the best photographer so don't expect much.

Joey and I parked at the apron at Red Hills Int'l. That's Jack 170 parked on the left. Poor thing is axle deep in the dirt. It's his lawn ornament now.

Image

Here's the east end of Red Hills Strip. This is normally the approach end of the strip. The key is to try to land at the end of the runway. It has a significant downslope so most people won't be able to land there, but it puts you on a perfect glideslope for the runway.

Image

Lots of room to park. Lots of room.

Image

Image

My selfie and Joey's... uh... well...

Image

Looking west -ish down the runway. The top of the runway in the photo is about the halfway point.

Image

Image

The man, the legend, Jack Moyle. He's got as many stories as you have time for. They have filmed everything from Bonanza, to Little House, to Bad Girls, to Back to the Future III on his property. He has photo albums with movie stars. He also has a bench that he won't let his wife touch because that's where he sat and talked to Drew Barrymore. :)

Image

Jack would like us all to fly in some time. He's more than happy for us to have a campout there and there is tons of room and plenty of strips in the area to go play around. We're welcome to play around his strip too. His only request is that everyone who flies in be capable of flying in. And he'd feel a lot more comfortable if we signed a liability waiver. Anyone got one? Jack and his wife are gracious hosts and would love for us all to fly in.

They also host a potluck on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter. They would love for any of us to fly in. It would be a pretty easy strip for anyone with even basic backcountry flying skills (like me.) Again, he just asks that we have a liability waiver. I'll be at the Easter potluck so if anyone else would like to come along, let me know.

I'll be organizing a pre-season campout at Red Hills later in the spring. It would be a great way to start off the summer flying season.

GPS coordinates if you want to take a look: 37.865224,-120.486762

Edit: I just found an old web page I did years ago that has some old pictures of this strip and the movie set that used to be there. In case anyone is interested. The set burned down back in 96.
