Re: Where did you fly today?

Some desert burning. Scouting out what I'm going to call the Lower Sierra Circuit.

First stop, Johannesburg. The east-west runway worked, but dang it was narrow. RAF folks have talked about doing work on it some day; would be a fun destination.

Image

Then over the hill to the 'other' Johannesburg strip. Now a BLM road.
Image

Followed by a quick stop on the surface of Mars.
Image

And a pit-stop at Ballarat, Meet the caretaker, buy a soda from him, and take in what is Ballarat.

Those all look like fun stops. Are you going to post coordinates at some point? By nice to have along so we can check places like those out even after HSF when out joy riding. Maybe they are on short field. Com?

Re: Where did you fly today?

Took my 82-year-old grand-aunt in-law on a scenic flight by Crater Lake this morning.
North side still under TFR, but south side was clear. Beautiful morning! She had a great time. Only second time ever in a small plane.

Just got done with some night landings. First I've flown this plane truly light. AMAZING. I got so lucky with the Racer!

Great to hear; that is a good looking plane. Sounds like it flies even better than it looks!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Just did the real math, I was around 1470 lbs tonight. The lightest I've flown the Racer prior to this is ~1950 lbs. Much more forward CG than before as well. The tail came up REAL quick!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I took my closet neighbor's wife flying the other day, he's been up several times, meanwhile she never expressed any interest. I broached the subject and she jumped at the chance, somewhat to my surprise.

First I stocked the plane's galley, I always like to provide refreshments to my passengers once aloft.

Image

One of this flight's objectives was to take some pics of the large local building project I have been involved with the last few months doing some of the crane work. That lake is fed by a stream, and it stocked. The stream is sourced by 2 8" water lines, the entire thing being artificial but done in such a way that the plan is to establish a resident stock of self reproducing fish, the state Fish and Game is heavily involved with this. Open to the public, with swimming areas, athletic fields etc. Tonight the Beach Boys were playing, that's them on stage if you look real close  Friends there told me my plane was 100% unheard, still, one pass and we were outa there.

Image

We landed the high field above my place, spotting a couple deer on short final, then on the low zoom down past her place and into mine saw a cow moose that has recently been hanging around between our two homes, then two more deer on final for my strip. A pretty damn scenic flight all in all, and the last good flying day WX wise since, so all the better. I am real good at getting along with wives, as long as they're not mine #-o

I find most folks don't realize how little prompting is needed to get your average pilot to take them flying.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Good flight, CG!

Took my wife, my brother and his wife to Panama City Beach for the weekend. We got a late start so it was a little bumpy but not too bad. And the guys at the FBO were great! The ended up moving some aircraft around to get me into a tie down spot on a crowded ramp!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Here's a few more pictures from this weekend. As I said earlier, we flew out to Shelter Cove for the night. While its not really backcountry, I think this is one of the best fly in destinations in California. Because of its location, on the "Lost Coast", it doesn't get too crowded with tourists. The coast line here was too rugged to build a costal highway. So the only way in is a long windy road from Garberville on the 101, or by airplane. It has a few different hotels to choose from, we stayed at the Inn of the Lost Coast which is only about a 1/4 mile walk from the north end of the airport. Every room has an ocean view and there is also a pizza restaurant, and a coffee shop. For pilots, they have a courtesy van for your convenience. We were the only fly in guests while we were there so we had free reign for our entire stay. The hotel also had an art gallery, an outside fire pit, and a hot tub. The rooms are reasonably priced and most are pet friendly, so we took our dog Tieton for an additional $15 fee. The Black Sands Beach is another 1/4mile north of the hotel and is a trailhead for hikers along the Lost Coast Trail. From here you can hike for miles and camp along the way. There's even a shuttle service available so you don't have to hike both ways. I'm planning on returning soon to hike the Lost Coast. Overall it was a great stay in Shelter Cove and I can't wait to go back!

There's also a nine hole golf course surrounding the airport.

Nice! That is one place on my list since I saw it featured in AOPA a few years back.
