182 rebuild/float conversion

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Haven't posted much but making progress. The big assemblies have been coming together and now for final. Here is last Friday with the tail all on and rigged, and the engine including the propeller on and rigged.
Wings, floats, avionics should go this week.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Speaking parts expensive to buy and worthless to sell, does anybody have a pair of wingtip position/strobe light shields to sell? Mine are missing and the few for sale run $67 to $195. I just need them soon.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Forget the light shields. We found them.
But I can show some real progress.
Yes the nose gear gets removed.

You're going to love those water wings. Get someone with EDO 2960 experience to check you out on those floats. You'll hate them at first, but after some practice, you'll find they work well.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

All the finish details take time, but they did the initial engine run yesterday. Said all was smooth but the mixture control cable. Might need a new one.
Also waiting on registration paperwork so that may take a while.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Hey this is looking great. I don't have much to offer in the way of aircraft technical help but I wanted to note that your images are GIF files. By spec, those are limited to 256 colors, which is why they look so grainy. Either you're taking these photos with a potato or exporting them in the wrong way from your camera/phone/image software.

I only bring this up because at some point you may want to review these photos for your own reference and they won't have enough resolution or detail to show you what you want. Trying using JPG at 80% or better quality, dimensions at 1600 pixels wide.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

I had trouble uploading the jpgs, so I just did screen grab gifs. I have the high definition originals. I tried the "better way" instructions but that did not work either. I would be happy to do it differently.
Painfully slow progress but progress none the less. Now waiting on Registration paperwork but, except for a few minor details, it is ready to fly. Interior is bare bones, fire bottle bracket not in yet, fueling step, etc.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Registration finally came through. Which allowed Airworthiness. And Insurance, and State registration.
But she is now cleared to fly. If the weather supports tomorrow we will do the test flight.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Great news. I’m sure you wish it had finished sooner, but this is still a very fast rebuild. It’ll be nice to know when all those parts that were consolidated take to the skies again!

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Congratulations!!! I can't wait to see your debrief.

I flew my new 182 for the first time yesterday too! Do you have the 82" Hartzell or the 84" Hartzell top prop on your baby? Mine has the 82" and it really puts a smile on my face. I can only imagine how nice that prop is on your -50!!!

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Weathered out due to thunderstorms on Sat. Worse today. But it looks like there is a weather window tomorrow afternoon. I will update with pics hopefully.

We went with the 82” since it will be on wheels part of the year.

Re: 182 rebuild/float conversion

Finally, she flies. A short squawk list but flies beautifully.
CG is well forward but that was expected, especially with no rear seat.
Now to fly the engine breaking ang see if we can get the Fresh Pick upgross STC.
