Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

Maybe you could come up with some suitable bribe to entice Joey and I to save a parking place for you.

Or, and maybe this is just crazy talk, you could celebrate your anniversary the weekend before? :?:

My wife doesn't care when it is, just that she gets her day.

Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

That would seem to be perfectly reasonable wouldn't it? I had a mothers day thing planned with some buddies, and told here like 8 months ahead of time that we would celebrate the weekend before. Well mothers day rolled around, and let's just say "reasonable" went out the window. I've learned to accept it.

Nevertheless, I will try my best ;)

Scott,

I think the S. CA bunch will be spending the night of the 19th at Columbia and then heading on from there on the 20th. The route depends on the Weather / Wind.

Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

I assume you S. cal guys are going up the coast to northern Cal then over to iDAHO... In my trips to JC the past 12 years I have found the fastest and best way for me is Gillespie to Tonopah to Battle Mountain and direct to JC from there... but then I fly 3 hour legs... you may not have the gas to make 3 hour legs....anyway it's 2 and a half to 3 hours to Tonopah then 1 hour 45 mins to Battle Mountain then 3 hours to JC ....which makes for a 8 hour day of flyin... I leave as early as I can on my getaway day an ususally get there late afternoon... since it stays light till around 9 30 up there there's usually plenty of time to make camp and get a fire going hot enough to barbie a steak and baked potato... have a few beers and hit the hay... all in all it's a long travel day but so worth it....

Iceman

Use to make it in 6hrs in the TR182 going the way you go with one stop, but we have a couple of the smaller slower one's that don't cruise more than 95-100mph so as a group we usually don't push it for a long day. I think direct in one day would be about 11hrs for the slower planes so we go up the West side of the mountains stay at Columbia and then go on in. Our range is about 4 1/2 hrs but our bladders won't last that long :)

Any one wanting to fly slower is more than welcome to hook up.

See you guys there.

We usually leave Westover-Amador (KJAQ) and head over the sierras just north of truckee then in to Denio Junction for gas, then to mcCall for a top off before going in. Avidflyer cruises around 90mph so that should work well.

Emmet, I was planning on forming up with you and Joey to fly on up there. Since you can't leave on the 19th maybe we should just all hook up with the SoCal guys and fly in as a gaggle?

Mogas is still available at Rome Service if you all need a Plan B or alternate. Give them a call just to be sure. Food is served there, too. http://skyvector.com/airport/0OR6/Rome-Service-Airport-Airport

Bit of a walk, but you can get Mogas at Mc Dermitt, too (bring your own container). http://skyvector.com/airport/26U/Mc-Dermitt-State-Airport

Oh, last I know. These two locations do not have "No Eth." fuel

well I don't know yet Ernie... I'll be going to Idaho again but as to when that depends on work.. I'm looking at the Utah trip first.. Then a month later to Idaho and I usually go to JC for 10 -14 days..Gotta get my fly fishing fix for the year, and maybe hit a strip or two that I havent in the past years, although there are only a few left I haven't seen. Sure a lot of planes going into JC which I tend to avoid since there are so many "new to Mountain flying" guys that go every year...I've seen 3 crashes, and a bunch of downright stupid moves at JC alone which is the easiest strip up there along with maybe Moose Creek..

Big John,,, I don't have long range tanks and I plan it so's I end up at JC with 1 hour fuel left when I get there... Next morning I head for McCall for Ice and supplies and top off for a couple days back country flying. Then I usually get my gas at Cascade cause it's cheaper, and a little friendlier and they also have a car I can borrow if I want to go into Cascade.....At least one morning I breakfast at Sulphur Creek and fish the stream there and maybe cast to a few of the 20+ inchers in the pond..I went your route one year and it was 2 hours longer for me that way. It would be nice to make it in 6 hours but my Maule isn't the speedster your TR 182 was..

Iceman,

Neither is the Kitfox that I fly now a speedster compared to the TR but is a lot more fun low and slow. I prefere Cascade also for fuel and we usually do a Breakfast at Sulphur and another Morning at Flying B.

My friend and I walked the strip before the pot luck, there were about fifteen spots empty, we counted 87 planes on the field, there must have been close to 100 or more there.

Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

well just for info i've been to JC during several type fly ins as well as BCP's fly in and there's always a place to park no matter how many planes have been there ....what isn't in great supply is hot water for showers and camp sites after the east side gets loaded with planes...if you don't get a camp site with a fire ring and are forced to tent on the west side of the runway you can usually horn in on a campfire to cook or just sit and enjoy the fire..anyone who wants to use my fire to barbecue or just visit and enjoy a beer , or in my case a good 15 year old scotch, is more than welcome at my campsite... Just don't talk politics or religion and I"ll welcome you as a friend...I always have a "white mans fire" going.. you know what that is...."white mans fire.... heat both sides of canyon".....Hope to make it this year if I can... can't let Burson be there without someone to give him shit about being retired....
