Thanks guys.

Yesterday was a comedy of errors. The Airboss and I were trying to set up the "Obstacles" in 13kt to 18kt winds. We almost had it when the wind decided to challenge us. It was pretty funny to watch as we were steadily pushed about. So, today I set in motion the purchase of some shorter "Obstacles" in case the wind blows the same during the event. :-)

Re: 2015 Texas STOL Roundup - 2nd Annual

Made some updates to the site's web pages, mostly to the Rules & Registration page, including adding the meals that will be available and their cost. Since we are offering three meals we dropped the entry fee and priced the meals separately.
http://www.texasstolroundup.org

Waiting on the "shorter obstacles" to arrive. The "obstacles" will be pylons, similar to what Red Bull Air Racing uses. Once we have a chance to test both sizes I'll explain how we will use them. I'm really excited about this year's Roundup. It will be here before we know it. Looking forward to seeing you guys & gals.

More announcements coming.

Re: 2015 Texas STOL Roundup - 2nd Annual

Was out testing the "obstacles" today. What a hoot! You guys are going to love this event, humbling for sure. You'd better start practicing.

The "obstacle" will be a pair of pylons to either side of the flight line, about 100' apart probably. We have two different sizes depending on the wind conditions. The tall one, 12m (or about 40') is the white one. If we use this one the top third will be a different color and as long as your wheels are in the colored zone or above you are fine. Get below into the white and that's a DQ. The shorter one, 7m (or about 22') is the one with the checkerboard top. If we use this one (windy day) you'll need to keep your wheels above the top of the pylon, otherwise a DQ.

In the photos below we set up one of each so we could see what they look like both from the ground and from the air. For the event they will both be the same, either the 12m ones or the 7m ones.

Those are awesome. Going to be fun! Will they be set up early for practice?

Looks to me like an irresistibly good time and only about 1,400 miles from home. I'm planning to go.
I do get spoiled by the BCP fly-in being held 100 miles from home here in Idaho.

Nope, not even for me. They don't go up again until the Roundup. Find yourself a local strip with an obstacle at the end and practice, practice, practice.

I'll give everyone a little hint of what not to do, don't fixate on trying to clear the pylons without a specific spot in mind where you want to land. I did that today and landed longer then I normally do at my home airport where I've got to clear a 35' oak tree.

In the real world, and this is what this event is supposed to simulate, whether landing over that oak tree, or out in the SQ2 landing a creek bottom over a tree or rock pile or whatever, I'm focused and landing a particular spot, and fly whatever approach I need to hit that spot while clearing the obstacle. Had I done that today my landings would have been shorter.

This is going to be a fun, interesting event, that is going to leave a bunch of us humbled. I'm just hoping I don't DQ everything again.

Re: 2015 Texas STOL Roundup - 2nd Annual

The angle of descent, over the obstacle, needs to be just steep enough to see the spot and still go over the obstacle. Speed needs to be as slow as possible or continually slowing, as in the apparent rate of closure approach. If speed is well under control, power will not be cut until near or at touchdown. We only have to cut power while still high when we are too fast.

Hope it will be OK to drive there, will picking up some stuff to big to fit in the plane, so will be driving to Austin. What's the best way to get there from Austin?

Looks like Barnstormer would like to "gin" up some interest on the "Backcountry Pilot" members meeting up at the STOL roundup.
I'll be glad to host a meet and greet around my plane on Saturday at some time....C180 N4671B...we just need to set a time...LLano Larry
says I'll be parking over at the sod field where the competition will be held, so front row seating will be available...

That is an excellent idea Zhomeguy. I'd suggest Friday evening since we will have meals available so most folks won't be heading to town to eat.

The meet-n-greet is a great idea! Friday afternoon and evening before it gets crazy on Saturday makes sense too.

Phil,
Are there going to be T-shirts available there to purchase or should I order now off your website?

I'd prefer you order off the website Chris, that way you are sure to get what you want. I will have shirts to sell at the Roundup but the variety may not be as great as I don't want to have left over shirts if I can help it.
