58 182 Project

On my trip flying to Reno this year we spotted a few planes that looked neglected. I ended up striking a deal with the owner of this straight tail and went out last week and trailered it home. 2400TT 800ish SMOH. No Logs. A year ago there was a pre-buy being done on the plane and the mechanic had the logs. Since then, the mechanic left and the logs are nowhere to be found.

My plan it to fix it (might need a cylinder). Fly it. And sell it. It has the 0-470R. The vertical stabilizer has some pretty major corrosion. I need to find a replacement for that. The horizontal stabilizer has a couple spots that don’t look to good, but I think that will be ok. It has a newer hartzell prop/spinner.

I have a little interest from people I know to buy as is. If nobody pulls the trigger this week I am going to get to work on it next week.

What are your guys thoughts on how much no logs effects the price of a plane?

Loaded up. The owner helped. We had the wings off and loaded in 4 hrs.

Re: 58 182 Project

No logs, no good. This will probably nearly halve its value. How does one know it’s actually 2800 hours TTAF and how did you get the 800 SMOH figure? Did you get the FAA records, if any info that may help rebuild logs?

Looks like a nice 182. What price point are you talking as is? PM if you like to keep private.

I NEVER let anyone take logs with them. Full copies will suffice and review of actual logs if needed in my presence. Heard too many stories exactly like this one.

Yes, I usually say that it's worth about 60% of its value with no logs. Unless there is some way to ascertain the actual hrs.

Re: 58 182 Project

The time to verify all the AD’s is not going to be insignificant or cheap. If there’s any chance of finding the A&P and the logs it might be worth pursuing.

Re: 58 182 Project

The previous owner and I both called anyone we could think of and he tore apart his house looking for the logs. Troy was the A&P working out of sterling air at Carson City. I don’t have his last name.

In this silly time of high priced planes. I was looking for around $35k as is and thinking 60k+ after I put 50 hrs or so on it. I guess I was thinking no logs would deduct about $25% from a nice flying straight tail.

I did get the FAA records and there is 130 pages of 12 different owners and a couple forms adding avionics and strobes. Nothing showing any damage history. All I have to go off of is what the previous owner told me for times. Tach time is supposed to be original. And the motor is supposed to be at 800hrs.

Re: 58 182 Project

Key words there are "supposed to". I've heard those quite a few times only to he proven quite wrong by logs. Then like flyingzebra said, how about ADS? What cylinders are on the engine? Does it have a VAR crank or no? What year was the engine overhauled? All those things go towards the planes value as well, so knowing none of them drops it more then a guy thinks.

Re: 58 182 Project

For sure. It was cheap enough I will not get hurt. It’s toI nice to part out I think. As far as the motor goes, the 172 project I worked on earlier this year had a motor built in 2000. Sat for 7 years. I flew it 100 hrs in 4 months. At the sale, there was no concern about the motor. That had logs though. I would plan to fly this a similar amount of time. Maybe I can reach out to a few previous owners to get more info, I’m not sure it will help - just being word of mouth yet. I’m open to ideas and thoughts :D I enjoy this stuff, in the end I will show the outcome. I’ve bought a couple projects this year and have not been burned yet. Two were parted out and 1 was the 172. The flying projects are more fun.

How hard can it be to locate a “known” name within a “localized” profession; someone, somewhere must known the name.

Re: 58 182 Project

I found his last name in my notes - Troy Creeks. His wifes name is Betty. I will try and do some digging. I did call the last owner today. He is going to try and find any records he may still have to verify the TT and SMOH hours. He did say those times sound correct. He sold the plane in 2014 though. He sprayed the tail section with the anti corrosion grey and had the corrosion X done. It sat for years at his local airport with flat tires, just like I found it. He put 25 hrs on it while he had it.

Although I agree with what everyone says about logs but the corrosion in the pictures is what concerns me.

Re: 58 182 Project

When you DO find the A&P that the previous owner claimed has the logs, offer a tidy reward for producing them. That should get his attention.

Re: 58 182 Project

good thought on $$ for the logs if he can produce them. I found a phone number that may be his today and left a message. I appreciate the ideas.

Corrosion in the vertical looks like replacement to me. The horizontal I am not sure. I have a really nice horizontal from my parts plane that may end up being used if needed.

Re: 58 182 Project

Did the A&P hold onto the logs because he was owed funds. It starting to sound like the seller isn't a completely truthful person.

What year is this ad from? Seems asking price is less than half compared to todays market.

I would love to hear the feedback from A&P involved. Keep us posted.

Re: 58 182 Project

Plane was sold to guy I bought it from on June 23rd 2015. The add would have been from that time frame.

The few people I was able to contact regarding the 182 before purchasing it did not have much good to say about the AMP. That included the owner of the building the Mechanic was renting. He may have been a good mechanic but a poor business man. He supposedly left the area owing many people money.

Seller did not seem to be the type that needed $. You never know though. He was very nice. Him and his son helped me take the wings off and load it up. Then we went to his local spot and had a few beers.
