Hi Rob & Butch,
I got a new high-tech, airplane friendly tent (smaller than I'm used to) that 's still in the box. I might need some help figuring out how to set it up.

Spring's been later than usual this year. I still have a 6' snow bank on the north side of my house. I'm really chomping at the bit for more of the backcountry airstrips to start opening up.

I was in Thomas Creek on April 2nd. Elk were everywhere up and down the Middle Fork. We even spotted a goat in Impassable Canyon. I took some German pilot friends in and a good time was had by all although it was still a big chilly for a dip in the hot springs.

See you guys there!

A couple of questions. Didinator and I are wanting to come to the fly-in.

1. Is it a family friendly event or a proper emulation of a Burning Man event? We're hoping for the former :)

2. Does anyone have an extra DC3 laying around to drag in all the stuff needed for a "family" style camping trip? With a 2yr old and 6 yr old, I've got the gear list pared down to about 210 lbs. But fitting it in a Skyhawk is the trick. (BTW, a 5 gal corny keg of Deschutes IPA is heavy).

Useful load of the STOL equipped 165 hp C172 is 900 lbs.

Gear:

Under Seats
2 Tents - 30 lbs
3 Thermarests - 10 lbs
4 Sleeping Bags (down) - 20 lbs

Backseat Floor
Food cooler - Misc - 40 lbs (beer if there's room and room on w/b)

Luggage Compartment
Chairs - 30 lbs
Fly Rods & gear - 20 lbs
Baseball mits and other kid entertainment - 10 lbs
Clothing - 20 lbs
Cooking Gear - 30 lbs
Luggage Comp total: 110 lbs (120 lb max)

Total Gear - 210 lbs
Didinator and I: 240 lbs
Kids & Planeseats: 100 lbs
Full Fuel - 228 lbs
Oil - 10 lbs

Rough estimate of 788 lbs so there's a little room weight wise. Still have to check the balance portion of this plan.

Now, combine all that weight and gear with two greenhorn pilots, a nice warm day, near max weight, and a trick canyon airport like Johnson Creek and we find ourselves asking "What are we smoking????"

At the least it would make sense for one of us to fly it with someone who's been in a few times. Anyone up for a Saturday or Sunday trip to Johnson Creek? Just a fly in and fly out most likely. I can pick you up. We're originating out of Redmond.

If we try it this year, I'd also like to fly wingman with someone from over here. Maybe Rob Bureson?

Thoughts fellas?

Spindrift-

We're not the Brady Bunch but we're not Burning Man either. Maulemaniac had his kids there in 2006 and it was fine. You just need to keep them upwind of those annoying cigar smokers. :)

From an academic point of view, you don't want your 172 loaded to max gross for Johnson Creek. I know many people have gotten in and out of there fine in the past in their 170/172, but the performance from what I've observed is not great...certainly not awe inspiring and little butt clenching to watch even if the temps are moderate.

With my 145hp 170 I plan on bringing my old man and minimal gear. I'm going to work my fuel so that I'm light going into McCall, and can add enough so that I'm at or below half full. I don't want to just barely make it out and be climbing at 200 fpm, I want to maximize my performance. My AFM shows about 2875 ft to clear a 50 ft obstacle at 60 F and max gross, and about a 465 fpm rate of climb. That's not great, but doable. Temps will be colder in all likelihood.

Takeoff from a moist grass strip at ~5000 MSL with no wind (which will prob be the case when you want to depart early on sunday) is much less exciting if you're light. You're probably used to operating above 4000 ft if you're in Sisters, but the terrain over in the Johnson Creek area is very unforgiving.

You can always coordinate with another member to meet at McCall and have them haul in some of your stuff if they are light and have the room.

That's my $.02. I've only flown in with friends in the past but I took notes.

Spindrift, leave your gear at McCall, drop your family off at JC, go back to McCall for gear and fuel then back to family and JC. Please.

Rob, note that both fuel tanks are full 90 gallons, you and I are no light weights, time 11:35. I won't be doing that again. I'll probably be their Tues. or Wed. Looking forward to seeing you all again.

Liking the drop-gear-at-mccall idea. Problem is, who is going to guard the full corny keg while I'm toodling over to JC?

As you know Galen Hanselman will be joining the flyin @ JC. A thread
Idaho Reporting Points on Chart has brought attention to the fact that Galen has begun work on a project to ID these reporting points chart them and eventually make them available as a waypoint transfer to your GPS map.(Similar to what he did for Utah) Some local pilots and others further away have volunteered to help in this effort by flying over points for verification taking notes and photo's. If you would like to volunteer to do one fly over please PM Galen. Due to last years fires the task has increased in scope but if we all pitch in it could make the area safer to fly in the future. The more experience you have with the area the better. If this is successful we could expand the effort to other areas in the country. Please consider this as a way to serve the flying community and make it safer for us all.

I'm going to be at Garden Valley that weekend and hope to drop over to the BCP fly-in at JC. I've never met anyone from BCP and am looking forward to meeting and hanging out with folks of a similar ilk. Hope you don't mind a drop-in from a nose-dragger pilot. BTW, I'd like to get one of those t-shirts you mention. Regards. Dave P.

I added a poll to the first post. I'm just curious how many to expect so I can gauge my T-shirt run.
