Hey Zane, I have been looking at the vote options at the beginning of this thread. You need to ad one more option.

This is it "Want to go but the grandkids are comming that week."

Tim-

I was going to buzz your house last weekend but I decided to go towards the coast instead. One of these days I'll head down that way and we can meet up at Montague or something. Or maybe the norcal contingent cal meet up somewhere cool...been looking at Ruth, CA. Would be better to find a grass strip though.

Montague has a dirt grass strip that crosses the paved runway. http://www.airnav.com/airport/1O5 Runway 5/23.

Dinsmore http://www.airnav.com/airport/D63 would be ok cus you can walk to a convenience store.

Guy, If you are staying all week and need a little something to do you could come over to Vale and visit old skybobb. We could probably go fly somewhere. Bob

Tim,
Isn't your grass strip almost ready for prime time? Every time I fly north I look down to see if your doing anything yet.

Hey everyone!

I am so excited for this fly in I just about can't stand it! Due to the snow last week, I had to postpone my first trip up north. But we are headed up that way this Wednesday and the weather is supposed to be great.

As for the fly in, I took the later half of the month off just to make sure I could make it and get some other flying in. My wife and baby boy will be heading up on the 25th to go play in Northern Idaho and plan on being back to JC on the 26th. We plan on being there for a couple of nights and then maybe a night or two over at Smiley Creek before heading home sometime on Monday or Tuesday.

I see one other person is bringing the family. Anyone else? Since this is my first fly in with you all, I'm looking forward to putting names to the avatars.

What is the normal protacol? Will we have one potluck dinner? Do you all just kind of get together and fly out to different places?

Looking forward to it!

Is the t-shirt model coming to the fly-in with shirts?

Re: T-shirt Model

My lease on her expired and the best I could do for a short notice replacement is a slightly overweight 58 year old swedish guy named "Dad."

T-shirt model - guns instead?

If she can't make it, how 'bout we have an informal gun show instead? I can't bring anything because they're "lost" in mom's attic, but there seems to be a lot of interest in the subject. Just having planes isn't enough - is it?
Besides - they're considered survival gear aren't they?

As I much as I love shooting, I wouldn't presume to do it at JC. That's like bringing a stereo and blasting rap music in the camping area for all to hear. You might enjoy it, but nobody else does.

We did it one year with permission about 50 yards North of the approach end at some targets. No one heard a thing at the campground. THe only way they knew we were target shooting was they saw us carrying the guns on the way back . Anyway there's a shooting range across the highway from Garden Valley Strip if anyone thinks they would be offended we could go there. Or not. I don't care. I'll probably be fishing at some strip every day anyway......Just a thought.

Butch, I don't think it has as much to do with permission(who needs permission?) as it does with disturbing the peace and solitude. I don't want to be known as the "airplanes who fly in, camp, and shoot guns."

we asked Gene first. Didn't want to be lousy guests. The stream is so loud in the campground it mostly drowned out the shots but if people know you are down there shooting they would recognize the sound as shots way off in the distance. Remember the strip is a mile long, so we were pretty far away from everyone..Besides gunshots in the Idaho back country are a pretty normal happening during hunting season and some of the town folks come out and shoot at the abandoned cabins on the other side of the road on the way to town sometimes. Well they don't shoot the cabins, i meant that's where they shoot..

Question about gear for camping at JC

I haven't camped at any of the Idaho backcountry strips, so I'm not sure how aggressive the bears are there. Can anyone advise me as to whether a bear-proof container for food is necessary at the strip? And is it necessary to get all food away from the airplane to avoid claw-holes in the fabric?

In some parts of CA, the bears are so aggressive that they will parachute into a campsite to make a food raid.

Someone familiar with the conditions there please give me some hints.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Jack, I immagine there are bears, (as well as BEERS) there but I have never seen one. Seen a Moose once at the North end and found a dead deer that was killed by a mountain lion but to answer your question, yes you have to tie some of your food and hang it from a clothes line. THe killer chipmunks will devour all your chips and edible stuff... Last I heard they were discussing how to open coolers. :^o In addition there is a pack of wolves around Chamberlain and more at another strip which I can't remember right now. :-k
