8/23/2008 - 2nd Annual Austin Fly-in - Austin, NV (9U3)

I'd like to invite everyone to the 2nd Annual Austin Fly-in, In Austin Nevada (9U3) on Saturday, August 23, 2008.

It's held in conjunction with the Austin Lions Club "All You Can Eat Steak Bar-B-Q", a small town get-together. Last year about 28 planes attended, and about half stayed overnight. We're hoping for even more this year.

You can fly in anytime, we're planning a banner tow exibition in the morning, then, for the bar-b-q ($10) to start at about noon. After noon and evening we were going to set up a bunch of fun, low key contests: Spot Landing-paved and dirt, toilet paper shredding, flour bombing, short take-off (can the Scout beat the Cub etc.?), horseshoes(?) and the new event invented last year, the infamous flyin ribbon stomp.

Everyone, of course, is more than welcome to camp overnight, or stay at one of Austin's motels..we'll find some kind of transportation... I would expect again an evening of hangar flying, friendship and pure fun, followed by a lets see what we each brung breakfast. Those interested will fly-out to watch the Battle Mtn. to Austin Open Road Car Race on Sunday.

We're still working on fuel, but keep in mind, as of now, none yet.... It should be a fun weekend though.

Sounds like fun to me, but I bet it will be hotter than hell in August.

Just looked at the sectional. the airport at Austin is listed at 5730', so maybe it won't be quite so hot. Most of the valleys in the Great Basin run about 4000 and they do get mighty hot in the summer. I also noticed on the quadrangle maps that there is a hot spring on the edge of a playa about 10 SW and another in the next valley east of Austin about 15 SE. anyone know if you can land near these springs? They might make good spots to camp.

Yea, the hot spring on Smith Creek Dry Lake is an excellent bath, and you can land anything about 1/4 mile from it, or you can land a Fat Tire Cub right there.

I anticipate the temperature as being about as close to perfect as it gets, for this fly-in, that's a big part of why we set the date late Aug. Should be mid 80s, and 50s at night.

Camping is always welcome, anytime of the year, were always glad to see anyone. Water is a fire hydrant, with the pump switch mounted close by, and remember... no fuel yet, I can haul car gas in my pickup... The Airport is normally unattended, but i'm sure we'll be around quite a bit on Friday, preparing.

I've got a picture of the hot spring in my gallery.... It's a fountain of youth, you'd never guess that I'm 132 years old huh???

Nice hotsprings picture. I've got a few from my favorite places, too.

I can get 91 octane mogas at Denio Junction. Is there any other places nearer Austin that could be a mogas stop?

I've used Rome a few times, but otherwise, Winnemucca Airport would be the closest fuel for you coming in from that direction...

Our Airport Board is working on fuel, permanently, for Austin, but I doubt if it will happen this summer... In an emergency, my pickup has a 100 gallon tank and pump, and we can haul from Austin (Chevron)....

Usually it's great, but sometimes it kinda sucks being in the middle of nowhere....

Go to idahobushco.com and click on photos and quick clips. You will see photos and video clips from last years fly in. I can tell you I had a blast. The flight from Caldwell to Austin was half the fun.

Smith Creek Dry Lake

This evening we had some grandkids over and had a fire at the back of the ranch. Marshmellows and such.

My son in law bought a kite at Costco for 10 bucks and he and his kids were flying it. He and I were dicusing how flying a kite is still fun but he came up with a better idea.

Just think about it. Kites and bottle rockets. Now that sounds like a good competition to have at Smith Creek Dry lake.

Just a little tid-bit, the Lions Club and Airport Board members are still planning and working on the Fly-in, and I thought I'd post this to bring it back up on the main page, as a reminder for those wanting to plan ahead.

Also, Eureka, Nevada is having a fly-in this Saturday.. May 10th.

I still plan on coming down for your fly-in, Joe. I think my sister and nephew are coming with me. They are city slickers from L.A., so they'll be in for some culture shock  ! Emmett will be a warm up for Austin  . Pat.
