If you are a student pilot, then the guy in the right seat needs to be a CFI. That is unless the right seat guy is pilot in comand and you cannot log it. If the plane gets wrecked, your insurance company will make the right seat guy (or gal) pay up.

Tim

True. But for one, I don't mind not logging the time. And secondly, as long as the pilot in the right set has logged hours in my make and model plane my insurance will pay for any damage. That was one of the questions I ask my insurance company many times, just to make sure! So I guess I should have asked if there is any Cessna 182 pilots in my area that would like to help me fly down to Austin?

We installed a great bar-bq pit in the last couple of days, going to cut wood this weekend, and maybe.... just maybe will try to rig up a redneck shower... slightly solar heated... it will be a horse trough painted black with a water pump in it pumping shower water into a makeshift tarp shower... Eeee hawww.

Dang, I'd like to be there too, but have airline tickets for England on the 21st to visit family. I know my not being there will put a damper on the fun, but y'all will just have to get over it . . .

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Any hot springs that can be landed near between Winnemucca and Austin? I'll be headed for the flyin at Austin on Friday, and figured I'd camp somewhere between the Black Rock Desert and Austin. I'm already familiar with the hot springs in the Black Rock area, but would like to know about other spots to the south. The springs at Smith Valley are too far.
thanks,
tom

There's one in Jersey Valley, but some drillers are working now fairly near. It's on a straight line between winnemucca airport and austin airport, about 50 miles from each. Look close, there is a neat rock tub...

...is there going to be a live version of "Fat Tires"???

I love that, as a matter of fact, I "stoled" it and used it on my Alaska Vacation slide show. Just private and no sales. Hope a six pack will be enough royalty?

I'm not sure if I can get to Austin from Minden without a great circle route. Does all that military airspace shut down for the weekends???

Looking up the Restricteds show active on weekends but I've cruised through them speaking with Fallon, no problem. Or: I can just stay south of them. From TRK R4816S can be defeated by staying below 500 agl; whoohoo!

The Austin MOA's 1& 2 are Mon-Fri. Maybe Oakland ATC will flight follow us along Hwy 50 but it does appear close to restricted areas! I thinking you are correct and the great circle is the only option. If anyone can share any other input I would appreciate the plan.

Fallon Desert, who operates the MOA here, is on 126.2, however I never call them unless I want to request to cross their "Restricted Airspace", in that case, I just would "request transit your restricted airspace direct to 9U3". If they are unable to clear you through the Restricted Airspace, which is about 50% of the time, they will send you through the VFR corridor. That means just follow the old Highway 50, between 7 and 8 thousand feet, or simply tell them you are "unfamiliar", and they will give you step by step to Austin. All of the controllers are usually trainees.

don't hesitate to call me with questions 775-964-2410 at home or 775-223-3613 on my cell.

Above is info from Coyote Ugly from page 2 of this forum. I'm sure he won't mind if you call him. He's a fantastic person and I'm telling you, if you plan to go to Austin and don't know Joe, make sure to meet him. You'll have alot of fun with those guys.

Everything seems to be shaping up for a great weekend, I think that even the weather is gonna co-operate..... Food should be really good, Beef is going underground at about 4 am Sat morn., and my wife is going into Fallon for fresh picked corn... There goes any chance of mine in the short take-off... I'll be way to heavy....

Last years winner has been practicing daily for the Spot Landing, I've gotta change the rules or something to make it a little tougher on him... Maybe J-3s will have to land prop-stopped?? Or how about a movable spot... Attached to a go-cart??? We're open to suggestions....

Watch out for a Breezy coming down from Boise, he'd make a big splatter on your spinner..

Semi-Solar Powered Shower is inching towards reality, and we added a few wing tiedowns on the west end of the ramp, to last years on the south side. Not enough for everyone I'm sure though...

Different Spot Landing Rules

I showed up for a spot landing contest once and their rules blew me out of the water.

The landing spot was 1/2 way down the runway. Opposite that spot on the down wind leg, you had to chop the throttle to the stop and do the rest windmilling. Now I think some cheated, but it sure messed me up with my usual approach with power. jg
