8:50 tire help/question
Avionics, airplane covers, tires, handheld radios, GPS receivers, wireless Wx uplink...any product related to backcountry aircraft and flying.
Greetings all,
Some time ago there was a discussion on which 8:50's were the best and I can't find it. Was wondering which tires are the best quality, biggest diameter, lightest, heaviest and so on. Also who to order them from.
The reason I ask is my buddy just found unairworthy indications on his 29" Bushwheels, bummer! He really doesn't want to put his spare set of 31's on right now and wants to put 8:50's on so this is why I ask and also, my 8:50's are getting pretty worn and I need a set of tires and tubes too.
26" Good years are a possibility, we have both ran them on our Super Cub's and Husky's so we know all the ins and outs on them, only problem is they are hard to find and are a bit on the expensive side even though they wear very well. Anyone have a source for 26" Goodyears too?
Thanks in advance!
Kurt

Kurt,
I've always had the best wear and performance from Goodyear 8.50s. They are also the largest diameter of any of the current production 8.50s to the best of my knowledge. They are more expensive than the Desser tires, which used to be made by McReary. I've worn out a set of those tires in a very short time, whereas Goodyears last for a long time.
Desser Tire seems to have as good a prices on both the Goodyear 8.50s and 26 inch blimp tires as anyone.

I recently acquired 26" goodyears from aircraft spruce. Still not cheap, but I think they were $50ish less than what Desser lists them for. I've gotten good service out of Goodyear 8.50's previously.

Has anyone run these smooth Desser 8:50's? I wonder how they wear. I also wonder what the diameter is compared to the Goodyear 8:50's.

Just put the Desser smooth 8.50's on the 120. 10 hours so far; so not much wear data. But they are a massive change from the standard 8.00x6's I had before; really smooth out the bumps.

If anyone has feedback on the smooth dessers on a 180/185 I'll buy them a beer.

Not a 180, but I believe Halestorm and Crzyivan13 have them on their 182's.

Fiddler: I also have a Cessna 120 I have 800s on it now and they're starting to look a little old. the airplane has not been in the air for the last five years I just rebuilt the Lycoming 0290 and fired it up a week ago.
I was also thinking of the 850 desser smoothies if you don't mind how did you do your paperwork.

I believe Mountainmatt has been running them on his Skywagon. I might be switching to these tires as well. Does anyone want some 26" goodyears?

What are the other tires in the picture that are on the airplane? 8:00's?

Yes those are the 8.00s that were replaced, and 7.00 x 600 on the nose now(Airhawk is the only brand that will fit the nose fork)

I had the 850 smoothies on my 180 for awhile . . They seemed to handle the pavement just fine with no real excessive wear . Not the squishiest tire out there but overall they were a good tire .

I got my Goodyear 8.50's from Desser. If Aircraft Spruce is cheaper consider asking Desser to match the price.

I've been running the smooth Desser's 850's on my Rans S7 for a couple of years now. Well over 200 hours with no sign of wear and on pavement 99.9%. Great tire
