You wouldn't expect a 1090ES solution like the 345 to have issues because it doesn't need to sync up to an external transponder in any way. It really is the best ads-b solution from the perspective of simplicity and reliability, but it's missing anonymous mode, so the FAA knows where your airplane is at all times.

Oh don’t worry, you’re not missing out on anything. The FAA knows exactly who/where you are even on “anonymous” mode.

I have a flight performance report to prove it.

Re: ADSB thingy

I'm curious why none of the 1090ES transponders were designed to have an anonymous feature?
At least 2 manufacturers of 978UAT's offer it-- uAvionix and Garmin.

Please don't spread misinformation.

Those that have the gear to decode the actual information broadcasted over the radio waves have confirmed that anonymous mode does not send out your tail number. The packets don't lie.

Did you even read what I posted? As I've outlined a number of times in this thread, the problem is when your ads-b gear sends out a few non-anonymous packets before going into anonymous mode. If you aren't using a GDL-82 with firmware less than 2 weeks ago, or an echoUAT with a serial connection to your transponder, then you aren't anonymous, and your flight performance report proves nothing.

The 1090ES specification doesn't provide for anonymous mode. It is basically an extension of mode S which always broadcasts your tail number.

Every 978mhz solution I've seen has some provision for anonymous mode, problem is that by law it can't broadcast anonymous without knowing for sure you are squawking 1200, and you can't know that unless your transponder is being interrogated or there is some other out of band connection like a serial cable.

I have anonymous mode on my gtx335. It's called pulling the breaker every time I'm not in airspace requiring it and placarding INOP [emoji6]

Re: ADSB thingy

Here's a quick update... Flew validation flights six and seven today, with the threshold at 31 on the first flight and 30 on the second. I scored 2.96 on the first, and 3.12 on the second (both above the 2% failure limit). Based on the following advice from Uavionix, I submitted the score to the rebate help desk email address.

Guidance from Uavionix was as follows:
4.2.2 Low percentage failures
Low percentage failures can be challenging to resolve. Coverage is a common reason for 1-5% failures. You cannot tune out a coverage issue. Do not adjust the threshold on an aircraft that is failing Mode 3A by less than 5%. Several customers have received rebate approvals for low percentage Mode 3A failures after review by the FAA ADS-B rebate help desk.

The help desk responded within a few hours and approved the flight, sharing a useful picture of where the isolated coverage loss occurred during my gentle turn to downwind on my last flight. I flew the same course on all seven flights within our mode C veil. It appears that Uavionix was correct about tuning out a coverage issue, as I may never have found a setting to eliminate that downwind turn blank spot.

The first five failed flights prompted me to take off the cowl and start checking for a source of electrical interference, or reason for the poor performance from my recently certified transponder. Turns out my alternator wire was on its last leg and finally fried during my fifth validation flight. In retrospect I'm grateful I got the opportunity to resolve the alternator problem at a relatively convenient time and location, so I guess I'm one guy that can be thankful for my whole ADS-B out experience. My transponder works much better at a consistent 13.8 volts.

I made a graphic for a friend that tries to explain why some systems do anonymous mode better. Hopefully it helps someone:

Re: ADSB thingy

Basic question if I may:

Do I understand it correctly that doing the Uavionics install your old transponder supplies the assigned transponder code and altitude and tail or wingtip unit supplies your position.

Re: ADSB thingy

Prior to the recent delay for Canada ADS-B, they had defined 3 phases between 2021, 2022, 2023. Basically, the 2021 phase was for above FL180, then phase 2 for 2022 was for FL125-FL180, and the final phase 3 for 2023 is for Terminal Areas. The 202 and 2022 phases were recently delayed and no new dates have been redefined yet.

Based on these ADS-B phases on the 1090 frequency, it is not for everywhere you fly, only the above-mentioned airspaces, unless that changes in the next revised phases.

Just like in the US, the ADS-B system works best and provides the best safety for all parties, the more equipped aircraft there are in the airspace. Being from the US, the benefit of subscription weather and traffic rebroadcast is pretty amazing to have.

No, I don’t read all your posts.

But in regards to my post, you are WRONG. What I posted is based 100% on verifiable and documented facts.

Your accusation asserts that you have intimate familiarity with my aircraft, the individuals at the FAA, and the folks at Uavionix, and all the documentation that backs up my claim. Very impressive LOL! [emoji849]

Your accusation of misinformation is worth what I paid to read your post. Have yourself a great day as I don’t care to discredit anything else you post (like I said, I don’t read them) but I’m here all day if you want to continue having fun.

Ah yes, the crumbs the faa throws out to entice folks to degrade their planes with this adsb bs.

By the way, thanks for jacking up the price of the AV30, uavionix.

The problem is that in Canada they won't broadcast on 978, and that's the frequency you guys in the US get your weather on. So in Canada we'll have a high cost for something I dont feel will make it much safer. So I'll be holding off as long as possible, or maybe equipping for the US so I can fly down there...
Just so i understand correctly, you are only working on the tailbeacon for Canada? Or the skybeacon as well? I'd prefer the skybeacon for a few reasons...

Perhaps I was too strong in my response, but you are spreading incorrect information. Privacy is very important to me, so I've decided to take the time to explain the privacy issues so that other like-minded people can have some information before making a choice. Your post says that there is no anonymous mode from the FAA, that is not true. There are ways to get total anonymous mode, but they are not well known.

Anyway, to your post: Unless your aircraft has a non-conformant ads-b install, then my accusation is based on understanding how the protocol works, verifying what the units are broadcasting on a technical level, several conversations with uavionix, and even confirmation of this information from uavionix in the other ads-b thread.

You are basing your information on what you have heard and experienced. I'm basing my information on the technical details of the protocol and an asd-b decoder that shows the data actually hitting the airwaves.

If the data coming from the aircraft never shows your actual ICAO code, how does the FAA know where you are? Give me something other than a friend of yours knows, or you got a report that shows an anonymous flight using an ads-b solution that's known to leak your ICAO.

Re: ADSB thingy

BTW, for all those with the Garmin 345 transponder families there is a software update to correct missing targets in high traffic areas

Garmin 345 1981A_ASDN

GTX 45R and GTX 345 Series ADS-B Software Version 3.13 fixes an issue where some traffic targets may be missed when over 200 targets are in range.

Your friendly Garmin dealer can get and install this for you.

Nice job treating a vendor and new poster trying to HELP some folks on this forum like an asshole.

Good grief, keep your nasty comments to yourself. Some of us appreciate actual information. And, I appreciate when vendors are brave enough to post on an aviation forum......they risk getting flamed by assholes.....

Of course the guy was saying how great adsb is - they are trying to sell these things. And, he didn't say anything about the privacy issue. And another thing - I don't appreciate the extreme price increase right after purchasing Aerovonics. Way to build a customer base.

Uh, MTV and Uavionix both support this forum fiscally as well as contributing and helping. I've learned a ton from both.

I suggest you consider both donating and providing productive conversation.
