Bold new technology from Cubcrafters

It will be quite interesting to see how this is received by the market, and if there are any fantastic benefits resulting to the STOL performance of these aircraft.

In my experience with light tandem STOL aircraft, I've always thought that less is more, but the additional weight and complexity of this innovation may bring tremendous gains. The folks over at Cubcrafters are definitely not buffoons, so they may be developing the next great thing.

Looks to me like a classic use of SBIR/STTR funding...

I've always thought that the active boundary layer control system on the US-2 Was pretty awesome.

What's old is new again. This reminds me of the Custer Channel Wing, although the Custer aircraft used the main powerplants to push air over the wings, not auxiliary motors mounted up high.

NASA did a bunch of experimental "blown wing" flight testing using a deHavilland Buffalo many years ago.

Re: Bold new technology from Cubcrafters

It's not a blown wing or a blown flap, instead it's a blown slat, a fresh concept.

Whether the weight, drag, complexity and cost are worth it is the big question.

Cubcrafters is a success story by practically all measures, so I am pretty reluctant to poo poo innovations of theirs that make it through the PR filters on to internetland.

However it is undeniably ugly as hell and probably would only find its way onto speciality STOL comp birds that have already come to terms with being ugly.

CubCrafters put a nosewheel on a XCub so at this point they’ve shown they’ll do anything. :D

Haha! Fair points.

I have done some instructing in the Nosewheel cubs. One interesting thing that I have noticed is that many professional pilots seem to get out of their Citations and Gulfstreams and drool all over the NX Cub. Whooda thunk :?

When your Cub is in the R-44 price range, cruises slower, carries half as many people, and will never land or takeoff as short you need to rethink your flying machine strategy. :D

Re: Bold new technology from Cubcrafters

Wasn’t their a Mig that used like bleed blown air over the wing for lift?

Cool to see people do interesting stuff, but that’s got to take a hit in the already low cruise speed on the carbon
