Craig's talking about me, nick-name Skeeter. He's jealous cause my C175 is a far superior craft compared to his Maul :-&
I suppose I can find time to give him a few pointers on basic aircraft operation while at Caveman.

Re: Caveman Fly In 2012

Went over to Caveman yesterday, visiting with Rod/Paula/Hunter and Johny. They are all getting pretty pumped up. Expecting a great turnout if the wx holds. Right now, the long range forecast is lookin good. Runway and camping areas are all looking great. Johny is having a birthday mid May, so if ya want to bring him a beer or two, or six  , give him a pat on the back, wish him a happy birthday, I'm sure he would appreciate it. He has worked his ass off there.

Talked to Ladd today. They are plannin on feedin 4-6PM on Fri.

I have been asked to replace some windsocks (before they new I wrecked my plane) at some of the local strips, so if anyone wants to come over early(llike Wed) we could go do that.

Thurs. I'll be workin on the poker run. And doin a quality control on the margs =D>

Won't be long now.

Re: Caveman Fly In 2012

Can I ask a favor from a kind soul?

Would someone be willing to meet me over at KCNY and ferry me over to Caveman? I hate to ask - but I'm flying over in a rental (if the weather is good) and I can't land at Caveman due to insurance and terms of the rental agreement. It's a long walk and I'm lazy. ;-) [-o<

If the weather is shiite - I'll be driving over in my pickup.

Depending on time and what location I am flying I could possibly help. You need a set time. The cell phones are hit and miss at Caveman. Some work in some locations but not everywhere on the grounds.

Re: Caveman Fly In 2012

Have mailed my waiver and insurance info......just wondering, I'm planning on camping under the wing. What fees or expenses should I be planning on? Looking forward to the group dinners, daily fly-outs, afternoon socializing. Or what can a person bring along to contribute? Any info would be appreciated......

Thanks,

Het Dave
Sounds good. I feel that it is mostly bring what ya want. If ya wanted to bring some kinda treat for Happy Evenings( we don't do it just for an hour), I'm sure it would be appreciated. Everything is donation this year. But, I'm thinkin a $15/night donation would be reasonable??? They do a lot for us, and it's all on them.

Re: Caveman Fly In 2012

Thanks Gary,

All sounds very reasonable, and happy to contribute to make evenings even happier!!
As far as food....do they have a cafe/restaurant?.....or are there meals planned just for the fly-in? For those of us camping....is it ok to do some cooking....like breakfast, under the wing? Or historically does the group dine, breakfast, lunch & dinner together?
Also, I am reading some bits of information on a Friday evening dinner at a different fly-in location.....any more information about that?
Planning on getting in mid-day Friday.....so I suppose I can get up to speed on the weekends events upon arrival, but any advanced information is always nice.

Thanks again,

They had some big smiles before we left last year. It's a big revenue maker for them.

Re: Caveman Fly In 2012

Information is a little scattered over the 12 pages and kind of difficult to find. I've read every post on this over the last few months but I, like Dave, still don't know exactly what to expect. Maybe someone can re-post any need to know info (Gary? :D ) for people that will be flying in since we are getting closer to the event.

Hey Rob
I read these posts and try to answer things that haven't been explaned previouslly, and some stuff that has. If I missed something, post it again and I'll address it. If it has already been posted, ya owe me a beer.
Seems that several folks just show up in the middle and start asking questions without reading the thread. I have tried to put important stuff and changes on the post on page 3 so it would be easy for everyone to refer to.
There are no rules here. Try to be considerate of others and have fun.
Anyone is always welcome to bring stuff, and do their own thing if they prefer.
I will organize some stuff so people get kind of an overview of the area id they are unfamiliar with it, give some pointers to those that would like them
Frequencies for the dirt strips is 122.9 You should keep the chatter of of this one.Recommended frequencies for plane to plane chat are 122.75/122.85 or whatever your favorite secret freq. is.

Re: Caveman Fly In 2012

Yo Gary,

First of all thanks again for organizing Caveman this year ( even without your plane in service !!!! ) last year it was a great event and I am really looking forward to it this year. As a 1 year veteran and still primarily a lurker compared to most people on this forum let me take a stab and try and address some of the questions from the first timers since most of them are still fresh in my mind.

Gary please do not hesitate to correct me if I have misunderstood your earlier posts or if things have changed.

First accommodations. Most people tent camp with their airplane. You will be camping on dry dirt and should bring what you need to make you comfortable IE sleeping bag rated to the temps, chairs, tables, stoves, coolers etc that you normally use when flying/camping in the backcountry. Caveman Ranch has some very unique rooms that are really caves and a magnificent lodge where there will be group meals, great bonfires, endless games of hearts, a fantastic outdoor seating area to meet and greet, share the bonfire, tell lies and spend hours gazing at the stars. A few pilots were gazing all night so to speak after enjoying their margaritas. I believe both the rooms and the lodge offer access to a common shower/bathroom area.

Second food. It looks like there will be a cooked breakfast available at Caveman on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a group dinner available a Mack Mesa on Friday night, and a dinner at Caveman lodge Saturday night. All of these are great and generally are available for a fee or a donation. There are several places nearby that you can fly to for nice meals and Gary is very generous in providing navigation tips on how to get there and sometimes there is a group heading there to fly with.

Third flying. There are numerous interesting and wonderful strips to fly into for experienced backcountry pilots in the area. As mentioned previously Galens Fly Utah is a great source and I have found that the Utah Supplemental World Aeronautical Chart is a way to get an overall picture of the area . Check the website http://www.flyidaho.com and I believe there is one posted on the wall of the lodge. Last years poker run was a blast and Gary designed it so newbies could get a real taste of the area. I find it handy to top off my fuel before I land at Caveman to give me the most flexibility ( Mack or Moab are possible choices ) and the Caveman strip is relatively benign if you are going in heavy as long as you have prior backcountry dirt experience. Although all landings will be severely rated by the pilots who have arrived previously and are sitting on the deck hydrating to replace the fluids lost on the lengthy flight, generally with margaritas.

All in all it is a great flyin with numerous opportunities to interact with other BCPers who have been grounded by the long winter, organized by Gary who is a generous with his knowledge of the area and time and hosted by Rod and his clan at their wonderful unique resort. :D
