Re: Explosive subject - Plastic Gas Cans -

Having read most of these posts and pondered fire safety, I bought a Blitz steel jerry can and metal flex spout and then screwed a wire with aligator calmp to the handle of the can so I can BOND to my airframe. I decant from plastic gas cans into the steel on the GROUND and then hoist the steel can up onto my wing which is padded with a floor mat from one of my vehicles. I find that tipping the steel can directly into the tank results in at least a little spillage on the wing so then I added a Mr. Funnel to give me a bigger target and filter for debris and water. It is slower than just tipping from plastic into the tank but I feel better about the fire safety issue.

Wow. I didn't scroll down far enough. That is a good looking can. Expensive, but buy just one or two and decant on the ground from plastic as suggested by Bill.

Anyone know why aluminum fuel cans aren't more prevalent? Expense? Durability? Is there some corrosive reaction between gasoline and alloy?

Re: Explosive subject - Plastic Gas Cans -

They should be able to make Aluminum cans since Boat Tanks are made from aluminum.

Here ya go: http://pitstopusa.com/c-132680-pit-equi ... -cans.html

I still use the plastic cans. When you walk up to the plane and touch it you will sometimes get shocked. I set the cans on the wings and if it's dry or I feel any static (usually in the hairs on your arm) I wet down the wing where the can is sitting and wipe down the can too. Then I do the other side and let it sit up there for a while. I touch everything too, new screws on the wing, the can and the gas cap before I open the tanks. I do it all again every time I get back on the ladder. So far, so good.

At this point if I burn my plane up it will just save me selling it for nothing. 8)

Gasoline isn't corrosive to aluminum alloys unless it contains ethanol. But, for that scenario, it could have an ethanol impervious paint or lacquer, be anodized, electroplated, etc. to resist the corrosion. The big problem is that per pound, aluminum is about 10x the cost of steel.

I like those squat cans, whether galvanized or stainless steel! I've found the manufacturer, they are a company in Taiwan.

I wonder what the cost per unit would be if enough people were interested to put together a group buy of a hundred or so and cut out the middle man.

Those are good looking cans. I wonder if we could get them with the old fashion nozzle rather than the "new and improved" EPA style.

Hey, we could order a whole bunch of them, and according to the Casey web site, we could make an airstrip out of those that we couldn't get sold. I notice from the Sand Parts website that the SquatCan is presently out of stock.

Wonder if that is because the SquatCan doesn't have the EPA spout? Maybe if they made the spout out of Mary Jane. Californians are so hard to please.

Here is a thing some of you might be interested in. If it's already been posted, sorry 'bout that.
It's called simple siphon.

Here's an ebay link to them.

Works good. Set the fuel container on the wing, put a length of hose on the simple siphon, stick the other end in your funnel or tank, rattle it a few times, and just like magic, the fuel goes from the container, into the tank.

Clothing friction
Combing hair
Static electrical fires

This can happen at any gas station. The type of can won't save you.

We can try to manage our risks but we can't eliminate them. Life is a gamble. I get up in the morning and try not to take it too seriously. The best days are when I can make someone laugh and regardless how serious we try to take ourselves, flying on this site is still mostly for fun.
