Flying with RobW56

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Do it! It will be awesome to see just how much those pants can handle.

I took my first float plane lesson in Alaska yesterday! It was a lot of fun! I didn’t have much time since I had to fly back to California afterwards but I logged 1.1hrs and 5 takeoffs and landings on 3 lakes. Image

That's awesome! Sure was a nice day in the central AK Range yesterday. What operator/ seaplane base did you use?

The planes belong to the Elmendorf Aero Club. They have a 180hp 172 and a 185 on floats at Sixmile Lake on the north side of the base. I wanted to go in the 185 but it wasn’t available.

Re: Flying with RobW56

I’ve been a little lazy updating this thread... Here’s some pictures of our summer trip back in July. I flew about 40 hours total in my 180 and my dad’s 170. We visited family in Wichita Falls TX, friends in Cheyenne WY, camped at John Creek and stayed at the big creek lodge, visited my family in Washington, and my wife’s parents in northern Idaho.

Awesome that your family is able to enjoy the 180 so much. Quick question - what tires are you running on your 180?

I’ve been running the 8.50 Desser smoothies the last couple years.

Great TR & photos Rob.
I hope both your kids grow up to be aviators,
but even if they don't you're creating wonderful lifelong memories.

Re: Flying with RobW56

(Posting my HSF trip report here to keep all my pictures in the same spot)

We had a great trip out to HSF this year. My brother in law and I flew out from San Antonio meeting up with 2 friends in their 182 from Little Rock along the way. We camped the first night at Happy Canyon in Utah. The next day I got a flat at Angel Point, the quickest and easiest option for me to get up and running again was to grab some 6.00x6 tubes and tires in Moab (big thanks to Red Tail Aviation for letting me borrow a jack and tools). The next day we stopped at Smith Creek hot springs for a backcountry bath then into Fallon to check out our friend Justin’s new place on a private strip. Then into Deadcow to see old friends and meet some new ones. On Saturday we left early due to the weather and stayed at Justin’s place again. The next day we took off early and had awesome tailwinds up high (70mph at one point) for most of the 1400 miles back to Texas.
