Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

The cool thing is Foreflight is doing it right by offering it as full screen or split screen. Would be nice if Garmin Pilot would offer split screen with their synthetic vision. I've put in a feature request for it, along with parallel routes.

Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

Didn't realize Foreflight did not have this. WingX has had it for years though I never could justify buying a AHRS device over other wants.

Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

The synthetic vision on Foreflight will still be usable without a Stratus for AHRS. It just won't have pitch and roll information. I plan on getting a Stratus anyways for the subscription free weather. The AHRS will be nice also, especially with the synthetic vision now.

Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

And it's an extra $25/year. I'm not sure why they didn't throw it in the pro... for that it's probably best for those with a stratus 2.

I wonder how it compares to aopa flyq.

Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

Naturally, just last week I sprung for a year of Garmin Pilot, just so I could see if SVT was worth having in the 180...

Perfect timing as usual.

Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

Gump,

I would like to have synthetic vision for peace of mind when flying IFR. It could save someone's life in the event of powerloss in IMC conditions. The incident near Johnson Creek last year comes to mind. Not that they could have made the airport but maybe they could have found a softer place to set their crippled plane down.

My SQ2 has synthetic vision as part of the Dynon Skyview and I have to say that I've never paid any attention to it, but it's never been in the soup either. Now the wagon is a different story. It is IFR certified and in the soup I think I'd like to have and would use synthetic vision, I'll take all the visual input I can get. :-)

Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

I have a healthy fear of unlit obstacles at night (paranoia). Might come in handy for that. Or making an approach into my poorly lit runway after dark.

Not that I do a lot of night flying. But when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

I have been using Xavion for over a year now... it is pretty amazing power off guidance if you lose an engine.

So, let me get this straight: You're flying around in the dark, VFR, so low that you're worried about unlighted objects, to a "poorly lit runway" and you somehow think synthetic vision on an IPad is going to make this safe?

Really?

Mike,

There was a pretty healthy dose of sarcasm in my original post.

I do have a lot of paranoia flying in the dark. Period. That was all I meant. I have gotten home in the last bit of twilight and wished i could turn up the lights 5 miles out. My runway lights do a fine job but are not adjustable.

I always have an out in that Parkersburg is about 7 miles away and the lights work great there if it is too dark to land at the house.

I have clear approaches on both ends of the runway so obstructions are a non issue. It would be nice to see terrain in syn vision just for reference, or to ease the paranoia. Like i said, Im scared of the dark.

Re: Foreflight Synthetic Vision

I have no position on synthetic vision yet (although I might spring for the FF version when it comes out, just for the interest), but there's one thing for all syn-vis users to keep in mind: If it's database driven and not a FLIR receiver, it's not 100% accurate when it comes to obstacles--no threading needles between poles or windmills, unless you really want to tangle with one. On several occasions over the last few years, I've seen obstacles on my GPSs (both the 96C handheld and the 430W) which showed to one side of my projected track but were actually on the other side, so they can be quite a ways off in the data bases--definitely not something to rely on.
