Long time lurker, first time poster! :)

Been flying my entire life almost. Soloed a 7ECA the week of my 16th birthday, private at 17, commercial at 18... CFII MEI, night freight dog in a Beech 18, regionals for 14-years-10-months-9-days till getting hired at Alaska. "Bush" flying a 737 in AK from PANC now.

But I have a problem, I own an airplane that is best suited for flying around in the slop of the PNW, and not very good at 90% of the "runways" in AK. The mighty Beech Sierra has done well for me and my vacations, but it is time to get something with the little wheel where it supposed to be. :)

Most importantly, I need to thank all of you for keeping me entertained and dreaming over the years, and *most recently the last 7 months.* I am in the process of getting my medical back, very soon! Without everyone's constant posting about all things airplanes and awesome, I'm sure my serenity would be spoiled.

Eric

Welcome Eric!

What was the N number of the 7ECA you soloed in? What year?

Slightly embarrassed/ashamed as I've posted here and introduced my self once before I'm sure its been at least a couple years and found myself lurking again. Live out west of Ft. Hood here in Texas. A&P for work currently working King Air 350s. My goal this year is to get a little more serious about flying and build some time for my commercial.

I just started flying again in the last couple months after a couple years off working and with not a lot of free time. I'll be flying out in Temple (KTPL). If any of you guys are close would like to meet up sometime maybe do some flying gas is on me.

I took my first flight a couple days ago in a J3 on some ABW couple days ago to see what the fuss is all about with these tail draggers. Long story short hopefully start on my endorsement next week. What a blast.

Zane thanks for such a great site and all you guys for the great content. I do a lot of traveling for work and this site is the go to daily.

Keep up the good work,

Luke

Howdy All,

I have lurked for a while, made minimal or insignificant posts but have started reaching out to this amazing bank of knowledge.

I am the proud owner of a beautiful 1956 Cessna 180 which was purchased in February of this year and an owner of 1973 Citabria GCAA.

I love the posts and really enjoy the questions posted. I have gained a great amount of knowledge and have so much more to learn but what an amazing organization to be apart of and the GA Community.

Thanks,

Matt

I'll be transitioning from an occasional poster to much more in 2019.

I've recently purchased a plane, and I plan on visiting/documenting Oregon waterways open to seaplanes over the next few years.

Lurker here, posted a few times here and there..I don't post much since I am still a student working on PPL currently. Hopefully get into TW and backcountry once I am a bit more experienced.
I have no knowledge to give, so I generally just read and try to shut up as much as possible. Hard for me sometimes. Lol.
Long-term dreams are to fly in Alaska for a small commercial outfit, but that will take a few years for me to get P-I-Comm first.

I felt the poke - so I speak up.

Hi everybody!

I'm a retired physicist and long time glider pilot, with lots of stories and photos - photography is another important part of my life - to share about soaring above (mostly mountains of) three continents.
Got my ASEL rating decades ago while working as post-doc in New Haven, when I couldn't resist the allure of the incredibly low cost (from a German perspective) of flying airplanes in the US. Low wing Pipers were the toys and tools at that time, flying for fun and work (travel), and just before moving back to Europe I almost got checked out in a C170.

During the last ten years I've been spending a lot of my time in Northern Patagonia (Argentina), and there an old dream of mine suddenly popped up again: spending a summer - or two - criss-crossing the US in a taildragger, visiting friends and enjoying the "friendly skies".

Since I'm drawn to small airports and grass strips I ended up here, as "potential backcountry pilot" as Zane put it in one of his introductory posts on this site.

Last summer I got my tailwheel endorsement and for quite some time I've been in brainstorming-mode about how to realize my dream.
I've spent many hours reading and learning from bcp.org with its phenomenal wealth of knowledge, advice and camaraderie - mil gracias and kudos to Zane and all contributors!! - and now the time has come to participate and, above all, ask questions.

See you soon over at the 'ownership' forum.

Re: Lurkers - 2019... Its your time

I am a “Lurker” I will admit it. Last summer I made an amazing trip with some good friends. We took two 180’s loaded to the roof. I built this 180 with this trip in mind. May there be many more in the future.
My 10-year-old son and I were in our 180. On the way up we stopped in Wyoming near Guernsey for a friend’s wedding. They stopped a center pivot irrigation for us to land in the alpha filed. Image
We meet up with our friends at Ryan Field in MT a RAF strip. What a cool Spot.
Image
Then it was off to Canada we flew the trench up to Watson Lake.
Image
Then turned west to Whitehorse then cleared customs at Northway, AK. They was a short fuel stop at Tok Junction. While there I was on a mission for a few things. One more Mountain House Beef Stroganoff. It seems my son and I am ate them all fast. The next things a mouse trap. I knocked my beer over (on the ground while unloading NOT FLYING) In Wyoming a mouse followed the trail up the tail wheel cables I am guessing. Beer was dripping out of the back. I hitched a ride a few miles down the road. Score! The store sold everything. The FU**ing mouse was having a great time the last 3 days. His ashes are in the fire ring by the old cabin at May Creek.
Image
We explored McCarthy and the mines, Enjoyed Bourbon on Glacier Ice that night that was saved in our water bottles after a long hike past the Kennecott Mine. There was Halibut fishing in Seldovia, camping at random spots we found, Glacier Creek was a cool spot.

Ofcorse Mom said get your summer reading done.
Image
I can't tell you how much wildlife he missed reading that book. I was a joke between the two planes.
Image
The trip was broken into two parts because of work. The Wagon’s were left in transient parking at Hood. We took all our stuff to a storage unit that was rented. My son made the comment someone from a storage auction would score if we didn’t return. That’s no joke two planes worth of stuff.
Image
The second half was a great time also. The 180/185 club had a fly-in at Bettles. The guys made us feel very welcome. One of the pilots we knew from Texas. One of the days a Bettles we flew up to Anaktuvuk Pass. The Brooks Range is amazing!!!
Water was high down south so, it was nice to find some bars.
Image
Image
The way back was the coastline to the south, weather was amazing. We flew down the Bearing Glacier to the coast.
Image
Image
Camped at Harlequin Lake cabin that night. Cool trail and walk to Harlequin Lake. There is a bridge to nowhere over the Dangerous River.
Image
Image

Then is was Jueau, Ketchikan and back to Canada we entered at Woodcock also Customs. Onward south to Prince George a few other stops and camping.
Image
Image
We entered the US at Glacier. The next stop was Polson where a bucket and soap waited for two dirty planes. After all we had to clean the dirty girls for our next stop in two days.
Image
We finished and celebrated the trip with more good friends at KOSH Air-Venture!!
After KOSH we returned home to our sleepy one plane strip in Louisiana.
Image
The flight time was around 106 hours for me. It seems a day doesn’t go by with out my son of myself talking about the trip. I will call out my friend that went as well. He is a Lurker also.
As I sat at my desk missing Alaska last week. I book a trip around the Great Alaskan Aviation Gathering. I am hoping to see some of our friends from last summer and meet new ones.

Sorry if the post dragged on. I have a ton of photos and had as many memories. :D. This trip was possible with the help of my good friend "Lurker EM", Thanks!

Welcome! That's an awesome looking wagon, but even better is that you seem to imply you'll be replacing it with a Bearhawk? 8) :P

Zane

Funny not a replacement at all. I have had a BH kit for a while  . I also had a 182 and a pa-18. A flood took the 182 and pa-18. So I replaced them with the 180..
