Not sure what type of 'go fast' guys you are hauling for, but nearly anyone on this site is always welcome to stop in. I've been a little out of the flying for awhile also but am trying my best to get back at it. Glad to see you back at it!

Supercross and Motocross. I'll be in Minneapolis April 14 for Supercross and Rochester (Millville) July 21 for Motocross. I have family and some other friends in Winona and around Minneapolis and might have some free time to spend the weekend before that Millville race in July.

May still be another year or two before I can afford to get flying again on a regular basis.

Re: Lurkers - Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are...

Hi All

I have been Lurking, wanting to join the forum for a while after watching all of the mountain flying and STOL.

56 year old guy trying to get my PPL but I'm already hoping, wishing that someday I will have the skills to fly like you guys do.

I'm drawn to this type of flying because I am an adventurist who loves walking off the beaten path. My love of the big peaks comes from being a backcountry snowboarder roaming around the high peaks of the eastern sierra. I have been on top of a lot of Big Peaks, now its time to fly in them.

I was hooked after watching the High Sierra fly in. I have 110 hours in a warrior and made it to the point of my checkride but had to take time off for an arm injury. Im back now and flying a 172.

Home field is KSEE and I do fly around over the mountains of east San Diego county but still a student .

So, how realistic is it for a guy my age to try to become a backcountry pilot? Money, of course but would you think age is a factor....ie am I too late to the party?

Once I get my license I plan to go to a local CFI here with a Citabria that I hope to get my tail dragger endorsement.

Then, I'm hoping there is someone in The Bishop CA area who teaches mountain flying and can get me on the right path

If there is a CFI in Bishop on the forum Id like to meet you

Thanks for all the great content I have seen so far.

Haven't been this excited about something in a while

Sierra Splitter, your not to old to join the party. If you can ride the big peaks of the southern sierras you can fly an airplane in them as well . It's not really hard it's just a lot of decision making .You most likely have learned to respect the Mtns by walking around in them , just bring that thought process to flying in them and you should be alright . Like you said , find someone to point you in the right direction (preferably someone who has a solid understanding of what NOT to do in a small plane around the big hills )and you will be doing the happy dance in no time .

Re: Lurkers - Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are...

I have been lurking here for awhile. Finally registered.

46 years old, started flying a year and a half ago. About 100 hours now, all in a 172. I live in Indy, but grew up in Arizona and will likely move back there in a few years. I have kids that will be scattered around the southwest. I am also into mountain biking, hiking, camping, etc. I want to get around the SW, with some light duty off airport stuff. Likely headed down the road of a 182 or a 205.

I am also a hotrod fanatic, own a '27 Model T with a Yblock. Also just build a 30 Model A with my 17 year old son. I work as an accountant.

I have been on internet forums for years. Thank you to all who take the time to post and share! I am mainly a consumer here for now. Eventually I hope to contribute.

hi my name is hnaymd, I, I, I am a lurker. ( BCP crowed responds: Hi hnaymd) Its been 2 weeks since I last lurked....I am glad to be here at lurkers anonymous......I promise to try and post more often yet as a lurker I feel inferior to such flying studs as those around here! It is quite daunting and intimidating I must say. I promise to try.....
Medicine now that I can talk all day, high altitude medicine definitely something I am familiar with. Environmental medicine I might have a little something to say about that too.
Skywagon's have become a quick and relentless passion. I have gained a massive amount of information due to this forum and other members websites like bigrenna! Keep the content coming I feel like I am drinking from a fire hydrant!
Thanks guys,

Re: Lurkers - Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are...

Hello everyone, another guilty lurker here....

Haven't had any content really worth posting at this point, but should be able to hopefully whip something up in the coming months! Got my private ticket 3 1/2 years ago and just added the tail dragger endorsement last year. Recently became the caretaker of a '46 C140 with a scott 3200 and o-200 upgrade and have been flying it all over the Hawaiian islands. Unfortunately, not much of a backcountry scene out here on Oahu (or any of the islands for that matter). 8GCBC, if you're ever looking for an excuse to mentor a relatively new pilot whenever you're on island, let me know  I return to Pearl Harbor from deployment in a few weeks, and will be hitting the ground running! I will be moving back to my home state of Massachusetts later this year and will be taking full advantage of all the spots in the north east worth hitting up! (Bigrenna, ill be keeping an eye out for you!)

In the meantime, lets see if I can figure this picture posting thing out...

Re: Lurkers - Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are...

sierrasplitter,
I started out flying at your home base KSEE, (35 years ago) and now I am your age.
A couple things come to mind. One is that age is not an issue (to a point). I will never forget my first part 135 check-ride in Alaska, The old check pilot looked at me and said (very sternly) that he can teach a monkey how to fly but he needs a pilot with good decision-making, I certainly agree with that! I do not feel that backcountry piloting is really about lightning fast reflexes and the superior strength of a 20-something, for me it's about the decision-making, even above the experience level. With good decision making you can bite off the situations that match your experience level.
When it comes to a tail wheel endorsement, that's great, it will give you some new perspectives about rudder and pitch attitude for takeoff and landing that is valuable experience (and I have given lots of tail wheel instruction) but back when I was flying out of your airport I got myself half interest in a Cessna 150 and I landed It on every dirt road and lake bed I could find in the desert until flying that plane felt like wearing old doeskin work gloves. If there is any way you can get yourself a plane of your own, or interest in a plane that you can get dirty I highly recommend it. It does not need to be some sexy cool Backcountry plane, just something that you can afford to put tons of hours on. Also never forget that any landing you ever do treat like your touching down on a 2 rut jeep trail in a very short field situation!
In regard to a mountain flying instructor getting you on the right path, there are definitely some fabulous Mountain flying instructors out there but you can do a hell of a lot by hooking up with some other weekend Back country flyers in the So-Cal desert area. I have flown with a lot of them and that flying would be great for you building your experience.
Have fun and keep us posted.

Re: Lurkers - Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are...

Hello all,

I think I might hold the record for the longest lurker. It’s been many many years! I’ve had the planes to fly but not the time. The good thing is change is on the horizon. I plan on pretty much retiring June 1st and will be making up for lost time in the air.

You know, I’ve been lurking so long I’ve watched some of you darn near raise an entire family and even though I’ve never met any of you I feel like I know many of you. I’ve enjoyed following you on your adventures and have learned a lot from your posts in regards to equipment, flying techniques, repairs and maintenance, and so much more. So thanks to Zane for this incredible site and to all of you for taking the time to participate and make this one of the premier aviation forums. I’m looking forward to a lot of flying, becoming an active member here at BCP, and hopefully crossing paths with many of you out there and getting to know you in person.

My trusty steeds are a Maule M5 235 C, Cessna 340A, and a Pitts S2B. My Co Pilot is a 5 yr old Golden Retriever named Shadow that I adopted last fall and he does love to fly.

Fly Safe and Happy Trails,

Gary and Shadow

Re: Lurkers - Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are...

It’s over five years since I got my Super Cub and have tended to visit supercub.org and the 195 sites. Am an Instrument instructor and this is quite a big industry in the UK. There are hundreds of small air strips in Europe usually for the microlight community, so runways around 400 yards in many cases. While I fly around 70 hours a year in the Super Cub am long overdue taking it on a longer tour. It has been as far as Barcelona, overnighting in a piggery in France (not kidding), but in the last couple of years the furthest it has gone is Yorkshire.

Am hoping to make some time and compete at the Club level in aerobatics, but in a Pitts S2-A.

The travel items on the site tend to be my favourite. We can all live vicariously and thanks to the posters.

Re: Lurkers - Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are...

Hi Everyone!

Long time lurker, first time poster! :)

Been flying my entire life almost. Soloed a 7ECA the week of my 16th birthday, private at 17, commercial at 18... CFII MEI, night freight dog in a Beech 18, regionals for 14-years-10-months-9-days till getting hired at Alaska. "Bush" flying a 737 in AK from PANC now.

But I have a problem, I own an airplane that is best suited for flying around in the slop of the PNW, and not very good at 90% of the "runways" in AK. The mighty Beech Sierra has done well for me and my vacations, but it is time to get something with the little wheel where it supposed to be. :)

Most importantly, I need to thank all of you for keeping me entertained and dreaming over the years, and *most recently the last 7 months.* I am in the process of getting my medical back, very soon! Without everyone's constant posting about all things airplanes and awesome, I'm sure my serenity would be spoiled.
