Mack Mesa Fat Tire Jamboree May 15-17, 2015

I spoke with Ladd yesterday and he said that they are planning on a fly-in May15-17. I don't know more than that. Since I'd not seen anything posted here, I thought I'd get the word out.

It's posted on the Colorado Pilot's Association website, as well as the New Mexico Pilot's Association event calendar, but you have to dig to find them. Thanks for letting folks know here.

Re: Mack Mesa Fat Tire Jamboree May 15-17, 2015

I am partially confused regarding Mack Mesa and hopefully someone can clear it up:

Sectionals show it is as a restricted/private use airport, but other (possibly outdated) sources show it as a public use airport. Do we need to get permission and possibly sign a liability waiver before heading out that way? I want to swing by that way possibly earlier than the Fat Tire Fly In...

??

Thanks in advance.

Re: Mack Mesa Fat Tire Jamboree May 15-17, 2015

It is a private airstrip now but all are welcome.
No waiver required at this time. Lets keep it that way.
24 hour self serve 100LL and plenty of free camping.
Courtesy van is usually available.
Bring your well behaved dogs but be advised there are several local "barn cats".
There is a HITS series triathlon going on that weekend at the nearby state park so camping at the lake is limited.
The Kokopelli / Loma mountain bike trail system is a short 2 mile ride away and the 18 Road system is about 6 miles away.

Sounds like perfection.

It is not listed on on sectionals but I am guessing CTAF&UNI is at 122.9 for the strip? Grand Junction closest AWOS?

I believe it is and Grand Junction is the nearest weather reporting point. Also, the west runway has a nice grass threshold to land on if you're so inclined.

Two Supercubs from California flew in to last years event and landed on the grass/dirt on the right side of 25. I certainly would check it out 1st before attempting it.

Re: Mack Mesa Fat Tire Jamboree May 15-17, 2015

800 feet of smooth grass at the Eastern end of the main runway.
The preferred non-pavement option.
Or land to the southern side of the main runway (dirt/light gravel)
"7 Right" if the winds are from the east and you don't want to back taxi.
Wind socks at both ends.
Camping is a large well defined grassy area east of the hangars.
Large fire pit and close to the rest room.
122.9 for coms. AWOS is Grand Junction about 25 miles east.
Mack is on most sectionals as either CO7 or 10CO.
Runway is not lighted so plan accordingly.
Ladd lives on the property so he is usually around 24/7 unless he if flying one of the Carbon Cubs.

Fantastic info -- thank you very much.

The western slope is calling my name and I can't wait to get over the rocks and out your way this season.

I'm going to this one, I'm bringing my bike, I'm riding the trails at Fruita. I'm sitting by the camp fire. It's my birthday that weekend so I'll do what I want!

My 61st birthday is Sunday the 17th. I'm doing my first Triathlon that day but I plan on being at Mack on Saturday for several hours to see who shows up for the fly-in.
Depending on how I feel after the race I plan on heading to Mack sometime Sunday afternoon to get a flight in.
I hope to see you all there.

Now that Gunnison is cancelled looks like I'm in here too. Can't fit my bike in my cub - but I hope to reserve a whip from OTE in Fruita. I'd love to get some riding in with you rez...

Adam and I will be there, hopefully with some friends in tow. He's excited about seeing the bowling ball cannons.

Let's do it, there are a few us planning on riding that weekend, along with the flying, eating, drinking, fire, etc.
The Mack trail head is about 2.5 miles from the airport. If we plan it right perhaps we could also get a group together and borrow the van to get to road 18 trail network.
Fun to be had by all.

I think the triathlon is going to negate a ride at Mack. But the van idea is likely workable.

Re: Mack Mesa Fat Tire Jamboree May 15-17, 2015

No reason the triathlon should affect any ride plans. All the local roads will be open for traffic throughout the entire weekend.
The Half and Full Ironman races are Sat and will be a bit busier. The Open, Sprint and Olympic races are Sunday and will be over by 11Am.
The only thing limited will be camping at the lake.
The Mack trailhead is about a 3 mile easy ride from Mack. Rabbit Valley, Mary's Loop or the 18 Road complex would be an easy shuttle in the van.
We've had a lot of rain lately and the trail conditions are just about perfect.
Moab is as good as it gets right now for biking. Last weekend was the best riding I have ever done in Moab in almost 30 years.
This weekend promises to be nearly as good.
As far as the local strip conditions, all this moisture has made them lush and green and the desert strips are almost loamy. They should be in primo shape for the Middle of May.
All in all, it looks to be an excellent time to be in western Colorado.

Was planning on it but fractured my ankle last thursday. Not sure I'll be able to use left rudder. Guess I could make right pattern :)
