My Super 170

Yes, it’s been a while since I posted.
Now, with exciting plans put in motion, I feel it’s the moment to become more active.

First, let me (re)introduce myself.
In my professional life I worked as a physicist at particle accelerators in Europe and the US. Off work I pursued my passion for flying in saiplanes.
A soaring expedition brought me to the Argentinean Andes and after retiring I decided to spent most of my time in Patagonia.

There a childhood dream resurfaced unexpectedly. It eventually lured me into searching for a Cessna 170 in the US. Not having any contacts to SEL- never mind tailwheel- pilots turned this into quite a project.
In the end I found the plane of my dreams, paid more than I had budgeted (of course), but got even more in return. All cool.

Here she is, my beautiful (am I biased?) ’55 C170B.

Image

I got a thorough check-out, burned gallons of 100LL practicing landings, and then went on a two week camping sortie meant as a trial run for bigger things to come.

What came was the pandemic…

It took over two years before I could reunite with my bird. Fortunately it was well taken care off during that time.

With months of plotting adventures we’d share once international travel resumed came fantasies of how to improve my 170.
Anybody following C170-stuff on BCP knows already where I’m headed (given the title of the thread): 180hp, of course.
Let’s see how that goes.

I’m grateful for BCP and all I’ve learned here. Sharing nuggets about 4VW and our path together is my attempt to contribute, even if it’s just a tiny bit.

Beautiful airplane. An O-360 will make it a worthy horse, no doubt. Otherwise, Sportsman STOL and keep it light.

I loved my 170.

Very nice, my 52 model just underwent a similar transformation and is now set to go for the 2022 float season.

Sportsman - yes, already on !

When I wrote:"...paid more than I had budgeted (of course), but got even more in return." I was referring to mods which were already installed.
The Sportsman cuff was one of them.

Couldn't find a better photo of the leading edge - but since this one reminded me of a beautiful morning flight along the Appalachians it'l do.

Interesting pitot tube...
I don't think I've ever seen one like that on a C170.

It's a cool mod fur sure... It's actually a rare Cessna dealer option. Not many out there. It made the Sportsman install a bit more tricky. LOL

Re: My Super 170

If you make it to the states to tour around with your 170, make sure and come visit Colorado. I tow sailplanes for the local commercial gilder operation here in Boulder, CO and I fly a skywagon.

The chief pilot (and myself) are avid climbers. He spent just returned from a month in El Chalten climbing a new route on Cerre Torre. Bad ass - well he is - I'm waay past my prime.

Boulder is definitely on my list (if all works out), since I have quite some history with the Soaring Society of Boulder during a sabbatical at NCAR.

Re: My Super 170

Well, the sportsman isn’t the only mod on 4VW.
Here’s the (rather long) list:

Sportsman
Airframes Alaska 6" wheels
Desser 8.50’s x 6
double puck brakes
heavy duty steel axles
Pponk gear brackets
400 x 4 glider tire in the Alaskan wide fork
Reiff preheater
extended baggage
F Attlee Dodge jump seat, right side only
BAS shoulder harness,
BAS tail pull
LED landing/taxi lights and strobes
JPI engine monitor
Garmin GNS430W
406 ELT
Rosen visors

When I started looking for 170s I quickly learned not only about the most desirable model but also about all those recommended and/or nice-to-have mods for off-asphalt ops.
Flying into and camping on grass fields and occasional off-airport adventures - that’s what I dreamed of.

Then this beauty showed up on my radar and it had pretty much all of those extras already installed!

Image

I couldn’t believe my luck!

Those sleepless nights until papers were signed and she was mine I’ll remember forever.

Apart from more horses - and we’re in the process of taking care of that - is there anything missing?
Anything necessary, desirable or apt to make the whole package even more enjoyable?

Re: My Super 170

I've come to enjoy my blister side windows, they offer a bit more shoulder room and great visability. They are available in a couple of depths, mine are four inch ones but there are six inch ones as well.

I just noticed you don't have a baggage door, its a huge bonus especially with the extended baggage.

Re: My Super 170

I might consider installing a uAvionix AV-30 instrument. One of those will provide a LOT of information for minimal cost. And easy install.

Tail springs on 170s are far too wimpy. I replaced my main leaf with a main leaf from an L-19 stack. MUCH better. I’ve had to rescue 170 drivers with a new main leaf when theirs broke in the bush.

Steering isn’t great on early 170s, but yours is a later model, so may be okay. I installed an aluminum angle on the steering arm to widen steering arm, then installed a 3214T “bent” steering arm in the tailwheel. Steering is better than most with that setup, and easy mods. I’d do the steering arm first, the standard steering arm WILL bend at some point, and the bent arm is much stronger and affords better steering geometry.

Other than that, your machine looks like it is very nicely set up. Keep it light and burn some gas!

Re: My Super 170

Congrats on the new 170, that's a stunner. Agree with other comments on 180 motor and baggage door.
Let me know if you ever make it up to the Pacific NW, lots of fun to be had.

Baggage door - I hear this often.
However, I’m not (yet?) convinced it’s worth the money for the type of flying I do.
On the camping trip I mentioned I had the jump seat removed, so there was this big empty space behind the front seats. Move/fold them forward and there was easy access.
If I wanted to fetch stuff from the extended part, yes, then I would have had to “climb” in. This, however, was often necessary for a different reason: I had a folding bike with me - one of the most cherished pieces of equipment during my adventure - and I don’t think that would have fit through the baggage door.

Image

Nonetheless, you made me curious: what do people (un)load through that door?
Isn’t it just as easy to store the important stuff right behind the front seats - if, like in my case, there are no seats in the back?
